MOCK DRAFT: Round 1

1. Raiders JaMarcus Russell QB LSU Junior

The Raiders' signing of Josh Booty last week hardly raised red flags in the Russell camp about being the No. 1 overall pick. And even if rumors about Oakland's interest in Daunte Culpepper prove to be true, Russell is a raw talent who could stand to spend a year being groomed behind a veteran.

2. Lions Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame Senior

Expect plenty of action around this pick as the draft approaches. The Lions won't draft another receiver with a high first-round pick, and aren't in great need of a franchise left tackle. If the Browns or another team don't step up with a small ransom to move into this slot, Quinn could be the pick as the successor to 11th-year veteran Jon Kitna.

3. Browns Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin Senior

With RB Jamal Lewis and LG Eric Steinbach already added via free agency, the Browns can create a formidable power running game with Thomas. And with QB Charlie Frye an unknown commodity and TE Kellen Winslow recovering from knee surgery, the offense needs a strong ground game to rely on.

4. Buccaneers Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech Junior

In most drafts, a talent like Johnson would never make it this far. His combination of size and strength would have an immediate impact, and his big-play ability will be coveted with Joey Galloway entering his 13th season.

5. Cardinals Gaines Adams DE Clemson Senior

The Cardinals need help at cornerback, but will be hard-pressed to justify selecting one out of this class with the fifth overall pick. The next best thing is to improve the pass rush to cut down on the time the cover men have to stick with their receivers. And with DE Bertrand Berry's recent injury history, the Cardinals need a long-term answer here.

6. Redskins Amobi Okoye DT Louisville Senior

Whether the Redskins view Omar Stoutmire as a starter or not, his signing last week gives the team more flexibility with this pick. This would be considered a bit of a reach for Okoye, but the 19-year-old with immense upside would provide another young talent alongside Kedric Golston to eventually supplant veterans Cornelius Griffin and Joe Salave'a.

7. Vikings Leon Hall CB Michigan Senior

Fred Smoot is gone, and the Vikings need a reliable third corner behind starters Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin. Hall could fill that role immediately, and offers Pro Bowl talent down the road.

8. Falcons (from Texans) LaRon Landry S LSU Senior

Chris Crocker was terrible in coverage last season, and even if Jimmy Williams makes the conversion to safety this year, the Falcons will eventually need to replace 12th-year veteran Lawyer Milloy. Landry is in the mold of the new breed of safeties who can play either the free or strong side.

9. Dolphins Alan Branch DT Michigan Junior

Branch is slipping down most draft boards after a poor Combine and Pro Day. But he is still an imposing run stuffer who fills a massive need for the Dolphins. DT Keith Traylor is entering his 15th season, and Branch has far more potential than any other tackle on the roster.

10. Texans (from Falcons) Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma

Even with Ahman Green and Ron Dayne on the roster, the Texans will be hard pressed to pass on Peterson should he fall this far. Green and Dayne aren't game-breakers at this point in their careers, and the Texans still need a big-play back for the long term. There is legitimate concern about Peterson's upright running style, but sharing the backfield for a year or two would allow Houston to test his durability.

Odd as it sounds, something must be up with Houston and AD. He is on a ton of mocks coming here 1st it was at 8 and now 10.

Anyone think he may pull a Manning(E) and refuse to play for another team. Thus we send them a player we take for them and a pick or so next season or something?

He did sound VERY much like he wantd to be here on 610am. He just sounded as if Cleveland would take him.

I just have a hard time seeing A) Cleveland pass him up and B) Another team not trading up to grab him before us.

I guess there is always C) most NFL teams like the Denver model of drafting late in the draft on RB now.

According to this mock Hall was taken by the Vikings (which I think is a reach), but maybe Revis to Miami at 9 then???

I agree with you. i just can't see Hall going before 10 really but I'd give him to Miami at 9.

Truth of it all though there is ALWAYS a reach in the top 10 and Hall to the Vikings very well could be it. I still think the Vikings could reach for Lynch but that's just my own personal opinion.

If anyone is going to make a reach it appears the Vikings are going to have to be the one to do so because the talent FALL off after those first 5 picks is DRAMATIC. 6 to 10 is going to be a very interesting set of picks.

i bet miami would take peterson if he's there at 9.

Is RIcky Williams still in the mix for the Dolphins?

To me, this Mock makes about as much sense as any other. I know one thing, if AP is there at 10, I'm calling the Bills and the Packers to see if a deal can be done.

:yahoo:

i see Alan Branch being this year's Lendale White.

I think Miami would take L. Hall before they made the branch move.

Completely agree. Branch is slipping in alot of people's minds. Takes plays off and seems a little lazy. I know he is a douche but Kiper has him out of his Top 25 players.

Ricky is supposedly filing for reinstatement...

Should be in Dolphins training camp...

And also, John Gruden said he'd consider taking AP....

Probably just a smkoescreen, but I wouldn't put it past them...

PREDICTION--------------------peterson amazingly falls to us at the 10 spot and oh wait...............there has been a trade.... thats right, the texans trade the 10th pick to the broncos for the 21st and a 3rd rd. texans pick tedd ginn jr with the 21st. OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH so close!!!!:gun:

I know you are half way jokeing but this is my real concern. I don't think AP/AD will be avaialble at # 10 but if he is, I am concerned we will we do something stupid, like not take him.

something stupid...........................................like having dj fall to us and then trading for travis johnson??? yeah i brought it up again, so what. :deadhorse and ill keep beating it!!!!

If the animal that is AD falls to us at #10, and we don't take him I will be irate. The main reason I wasn't very mad about the Bush deal last year was because of Peterson coming in this year.

That being said he will not fall to us, and we will take Hall, Landry, Brown, or trade down.

your not alone. spot on :winky:

There's a lot of talented running backs that should declare next year.

Bush isn't a legit running back.

So you would be mad if the Texans would make a trade with say Buffalo if AP is there and we get more picks and draft a CB or Safety in the first and get an extra third or so? Or maybe even get an O-lineman like say, Kahlil at the end of the first and pick up a lot more picks.

I would not be upset what so ever, but then again I also think runningbacks can be had throughout the first day versus getting one in the first round ... rather fill other needs.

trade ap for a 3rd? i wouldnt do it. id take my chance with ap shaub and aj for the next 5 years. were not going to get a better trio than that.

close... i'd make a trade but AT MINIMUM i would require denver's 1st and 3rd this year and their 2nd rder next year. i would hope for more like their 1st and 2nd/ with next years 2nd. I like the trade for schaub and think it's going to be a good move but not having 2 2nd round picks is going to hurt and we need to get them back.

at 21 we're looking at POSSIBLY getting...
darrelle revis, reggie nelson? doubt it, chris houston, robert meachem, dwayne bowe, ted ginn jr., aaron ross, michael griffin, brandon meriweather, charles johnson....etc.

If we could get both our 2nd round picks back (that might be a stretch) i would make that trade in a second. i'd then take the best available DB if he would warrant that pick.

I typed that fast, I am sure there would be more picks than just a third but I would trade down because of the fact of getting more picks.

The most likely trade down oportunities, IMHO, are with Buffalo and GB, if AP slids to 10.

Houston's #10 pick is valued at 1300.
Buffalo's #12 and #74 picks are valued at 1200 and 225, or 1425
Grenn Bay's #16 and #78 picks are valued at 1000 and 205, or 1205. We might be able to get another pick from the Packers, like a 2nd round pick next year.

Possibly with someone like a Denver, if they really want Patrick Wiliis, or New England. The problem is, NE no longer has their 2nd round pick (Wes Welker deal). They really have to be in love with Willis, or maybe Laron Landry, to trade their two #1's.

Houston's #10 pick is valued at 1300.
Denver's #21 and #56 picks are worth 875 and 350, or 1225. They do have two 3rd round picks, #'s 70 and 86. Might get them to throw one of those in the deal.
NE'e #24 and #28 picks are worth 800 and 700, or 1500. Somehow, I really doubt the NE deal goes down. Just doesn't sound like the kind of thing the Pats would do.

do yall think there would be a problem with a trade down partner if Peterson does fall to us?

i only say that because marshawn lynch is still there and if green bay wouldn't mind either then it might not be worth them trading up but instead wait at 16 and they have a better chance of a RB falling to them with 2 still on the board.

Might be a problem. Still, if you are talking to multiple teams, you can always throw that in the conversation.

GB: Houston, I think we are going to pass on your trade proposal. It's in our best interest to take our chances at 16.

Houston: Fair enough, Green Bay. However, before we let you go, I think it's only fair to tell you that we are in active talks with both Buffalo and Denver about securing this pick. So, if you change your mind, don't wait to long to get back with us.

It's all about who's better at :poker:

I will be ticked off also... why? because i still have the DJ trade in my mind... we traded 3 spots and what rumors said we were targeted 2 guys and odds were one would still be there ...well those guys got taken and we ended up taking TJ

If he somehow slipped that far, and we thought about trading that pick away, IMHO going by the trade value chart would be out of the window because to me he is a top three pick, so we would have to treat him as such and demand more value in that trade.

Next year does offer some great backs in possibly Slaton or Mcfaddin, but AD IMHO is superior to them, and I would finnaly rather see him on a team of mine then running all over my team as I saw him consistently do against the Aggies (except ofcourse when he was out this year).
