As a Hearst fan, here is basically the story. Hearst had some bone spurs, took the field in 94 for the Cards and tore his knee up. Knee still bothering him into 95, missed sporatic games. In 96, he ran for 1000 yards and put together a good year for the Cardinals. They drafted Leeland McElroy out of Texas, and after seeing him through 3 preseason games, cut Hearst the last week of camp to save on his bonus money and salary.
Cincinatti signed him, Kijana Carter was their 2nd year stud. Carter blew out his knee Week 7, Hearst started the last 9 games ran for like 900 yards and they went 8-1. With Carter's contract, they let Hearst walk. No offer, nothing.
As we know Hearst went to the Niners was a top 3 back with unreal burst and home run speed. Then he broke his leg after his second Pro Bowl year. Even after the break, he was a plus NFL back but never got back the home run speed. Kinda interesting that we didn't think about bringing him in this year as he was widely known as the best blocking running back in the league.

This then begs the question, why haven't we brought in a successful veteran ANYWHERE to help our offensive skill position players?

Well I think we did, or tired to and just ruined them. For example I thought Wade was pretty good when we first got him, maybe not $10M bonus good, but good. Then at about midseason he started to regress and that regression seemed to continue until the moment he got injured this year. He started off so badly this year I thought our training camp must have really taught him some bad stuff.
