Forde: Texas ranked #11

Wolf

100% Texan
Picking the 2006 Top 25 in January is dumber than an improvised lateral on the dead run to an unsuspecting teammate. (Was that really you, Reggie Bush?) But that's the job here, with a mild re-write after underclassmen have made their stay-or-go declarations for the NFL draft

11. Texas Longhorns
Why: The monkey is off their back and lies dead at the Longhorns' feet. They know how to win championships -- and they have a deep cast of skill-position talent to work with, even if the quarterback has changed.

i used to go to WVU, that's insane how they're ranked #1 on this guy's list. I think Texas will be a lot better than people expect next year.

That is Forde's list another list from espn has Texas going #1, but there is a lot to wait on until next year.

There is no way UT gets a top 5 preseason rank. Same thing with USC. The loss of VY alone makes them borderline but when you throw in some of the OLine leaving and some key defensive players like Wright and Huff and others they shouldn't get in. I wouldn't be suprised if they sqeaked into the top 10, though.

It's not so much that they're losing Young as it is who is replacing him. Whoever it is (McCoy, Snead, Harris) has yet to take a snap at the college level.

Their OL won't take a big hit if any. Many expect Tony Hills to fill in for Scott at LT and not miss a beat (Hills has played in place of Scott before and nobody noticed it). The only other player they lose is Will Allen.

They've got a great running game but most of that had to do with Vince. Will they be able to continue to run the ball effectively when the defense doesn't have to committ a player to spy on the QB and are able to load 8/9 in the box because the passing game is limited by youth at QB? That remains to be seen but it will be the reason for their success (or lack of it).

The defense is going to be as good if not better. The loss of Wright hurts but many think Okam will be a better player. But losing both Dibbles and Wright can't be ignored. Fortunately, both DEs (Robison and Crowder) return and will be better. So worst up the middle, better on the outside.

Huff moves on but there will be 3 seniors (Ross, Brown, Griffin) manning 3 of the 4 secondary positions. That's a good thing to have.

The LBs could be the funnest group to watch.

On top of all that, they're going into their second season under Gene Chizik. Having that continuity that they didn't have from last year will help.

I think #11 is a pretty fair assessment. It'd be nice to have the luxury of saying it doesn't matter much but tell that to Auburn. They started out 17th the year they went undefeated and missed out on a chance to play for the MNC because of that ranking.

Thats just plain wrong. They are returning a lot of starters. They have a good Frosh who can step in and are bringing in 3 additional freshman QBs. One of them will pan out.

Yep, I hope Sergio Kendell tears it up, the guy is a monster!
Yeah, and I really wasn't considering Kindle. But guys like Kelson, Killebrew, Bobino and Muckelroy really bring the wood. They arrive with bad intentions. Sergio is only going to add to this.

They're bringing in 2 true freshmen (Snead, Harris) and have one redshirt freshmen (McCoy) that sat this past season. Snead will have the benefit of Spring practice since he's already in school but the learning curve will be pretty steep (Ohio State is the 2nd game of the season). If they can make it past the Buckeyes, they'll have a few easier games to get ready for their next test (Oklahoma).

One of them will pan out (probably more than 1). But it's going to take some time before that happens.

Ugh, yea, OSU 2nd game of the season. I'll be shocked if Texas wins that game with Smith pulling his best VY impressions out of his hat.
