First 2013 mock

First mock for me for the 2013 draft and the first one Ive posted in about 4 years ....

In this mock , I assume that both Glover Quin and Shaun Cody are resigned and that they are able to keep one of Dobbins or James at ILB.

FA's that walk -

CB
McCain
Rout
Ball

DE
Nading

DT
Harris (on IR)

ILB
Ruud
Fox

OG
Caldwell

OT
Harris
Butler

S
Demps

K
Graham

Taking into consideration the players that walk in FA and the play of those on the field in recent weeks , my position board has three main needs in CB , OG and WR in the premium piock rounds 1-3.

Im also on the fence with retaining Barwin but with Mercilus I wont spend a premium pick there.

Im expecting three comp picks , one in each 3rd , 5th and 7th.

#1 Desmond Trufant, CB - Washington. (David Amerson should also get strong consideration here)

#2 Kyle Long, OL - Oregon (versatile , could move to RT)

#3 Nico Johnson, ILB - Alabama

#3c Da'Rick Rogers, WR - Tennessee Tech (the whole package , steal in the 3rd)

#4 Brandon Williams, DT - Missouri Southern State

#5 Cornelius Washington, OLB - Georgia (classic tweener)

#5c Rodney Smith, WR - Florida State (Big redzone target)

#6 Travis Carrie, CB - Ohio (speed to burn with the size to play S , good ST player)

#7 Taimi Tutogi, FB - Arizona (Thumper FB , no more pussyfooting around with Casey , he either moves back to TE or walks in FA)

#7c Joseph Fauria, TE - UCLA (Big redzone target , what Texans mock would be complete without a TE?)

very good draft. Don't think Long is coming out. Last I read he was petitioning for another year. Has he declared and I missed it?

JMO:

1. Trufant, this might be a little early but considering CB is a premium position and like QB's they usually go a little early, it's not a bad pick. I'd prefer a NT here but I could go for CB in the 1st. He'd add quality depth to our secondary.
2. Long, love this pick. He might take a year to grow and adjust to the NFL but he's going to be a very good player.
3. Johnson, love this pick as well. He adds some size to our ILB's.
3b. Rogers, great pick if still available but I think he goes earlier. I also have doubts the Texans would take a pot head.
4. Williams, not a bad pick if we keep Cody but this guy is going to take a couple years to develop.
5 and 5b. Washington and Smith, I know nothing about either player.
6. Carrie, same as above.
7. Tutogi, I think we can probably get him as an UDFA but I agree with the position and size of player for it. I like J.C. Copeland here, Vonta vol. 2.0.
7b. Fauria, you really think he falls this far? Tall, athletic TE, can he block?

NT is off my list pretty much if Cody resigns ... and if he doesnt , I still dont see them taking one in the first two picks.

Like I said in the Walter Mock thread , Wade tends to move move Ninja and another 3-4 DE inside with Watt and Barwin as the bookends in passing situations.

Really hard for me to take a situational guy here - I know Trufant isnt a three down guy either , but they are in nickle and dime packages an awful lot.

2. Long, love this pick. He might take a year to grow and adjust to the NFL but he's going to be a very good player.

Yeah , he's going to be a good one .... I think he could start at RT or either G early on. Either way , it allows you to upgrade the OL and its depth. If he ends up at RT Newton becomes the swing tackle.

This pick gives you a young athletic OL for years to come - Brooks , Jones , Newton , Long and Brown all have a lot of tread on the tire.

3. Johnson, love this pick as well. He adds some size to our ILB's.

Really need some help inside .... This pick gives you a guy who can play sideline to sideline.
3b. Rogers, great pick if still available but I think he goes earlier. I also have doubts the Texans would take a pot head.

He may be gone .... he's the only guy on my list I think might go well ahead of where I have him tho the pot might be what keeps him late 3rd.

4. Williams, not a bad pick if we keep Cody but this guy is going to take a couple years to develop.

That was the idea here .... a guy to develop behind Cody pending they decide to retain him. I think they do ....

5 and 5b. Washington and Smith, I know nothing about either player.
6. Carrie, same as above.

When it gets this late , this far away from the draft .... thats to be expected.

Smith is a 6'5" WR from Florida State. Not exceptionally fast .... but a huge target with good hands.

Travis Carrie is a productive CB for Ohio , probably under the radar for a lot of people. 5'11 212 with plenty of speed. Can play CB , FS as well as a solid ST contributor. Lord knows we need to improve there.

Washington has been a productive player in the SEC for Georgia , classic tweener size. 6'4" 268. Probably a special teams guy but all you can hope for this late is a guy who will contribute.

7. Tutogi, I think we can probably get him as an UDFA but I agree with the position and size of player for it. I like J.C. Copeland here, Vonta vol. 2.0.

You might be right , was a couple OT prospects I considered here as well .... but at the end of the day , I want a thumper FB and this is where I get him.

7b. Fauria, you really think he falls this far? Tall, athletic TE, can he block?

This is where I have him now. The combine may change that. He's all over the place in terms of ranking depending on who you listen to , anywhere from 6th to 11th among TE's. Hell , I may have mixed up my rankings .... LOL

The biggest point we differ on is Shaun Cody, I don't think the Texans re-sign him. He's to old, to injured, and not productive enough to give a FA contract to. I saw him in the Colts game being manhandled by a single blocker easily. I think if the Texans were going to re-sign him they would have done so before this season started like Brown and Schaub since Cody would have been a fairly cheap re-sign.

If they dont resign him .... that changes everything. I'll have to go back and re-evaluate my positions and make adjustments. But again , I dont see Cody's position on this defense warranting a #1 pick unless one of the stud prospects falls ..... I dont see any of the first round worthy guy's being on the board at ~28-32.

Any guy's youd take in the 3rd or even a move up into round two to fill that spot ?

Hell , I could see Smith moving out of the first all toghther .... giving us multiple picks in rounds two and three to play with.

I think the DT's that fit our system are Kawann Short, Sylvester Williams, Jesse Williams, and possibly Sharrif Floyd. I think at least one of them should be available when we pick in the 1st. As for who to take in the 3rd, none at this time, but that may change after the Senior Bowl and Combine once we get more info. on alot of these players. Later round guys to keep an eye on, I like Brandon Williams, Cory Grissom, Abry Jones, or Anthony Rashad White. As for a trade down, moving out of the 1st round, I hope not. But I would like to see us use our own picks to move back up into the 2nd round a couple times with Ben Tate and TJ Yates also being trade bait. I'd really like to see us come away with a 1st and at least three 2nd round picks. We need quality not quantity, and the expected Comp. picks should allow us to do this. In fact I hope Rick Smith is on the phone now talking with some of his fellow GM buddies laying the ground work for draft day trades.

I thought I was the only crazy person up this time of night.

Remember those Comp picks cant be traded. I think it highly unlikely that they come away with thee #2's. Could see Tate moved , not sure what he would net in return , dont see Yates going anywhere.

IM up because my hand is absolutely killing me and the pain meds arent helping at all.

Yea I know the comp. picks can't be traded but we've got enough other picks along with Tate and possibly Yates that we could get two additional 2nd round picks out of the draft. Sorry to hear about the hand, I'm up because I work nights.

1). I like Trufant. A little disappointing with his last bowl game. He was beaten too often & out of position. Now I'm not so sure he is cover corner & do we need another nickle? well that would be a little forced if McCain is not resigned. I wonder how much his injury affects his upcoming free agent status, might end up working in Texan favor (re-signing him).

2). Love Longs future in the NFL. Smart & physical. Ideal fit is LG. But have not seen him play any tackle. He is still learning position. I think Texans would go another direction this early & if he is on the board one of those two thirds I would be all over it.

3). Would consider swapping Long with Nico? Think each slots in better based off big board rankings. Good addition to linebackers.

3). Yeah, not sure Rodgers will be there even in 2nd. pipe dream pot head. His interview session would be very interesting indeed.

4). Better late than never. Good developmental prospect have no issue taking him even if they take a better one earlier. This is a huge area of need for Texans who are soft in the middle & strike no fear into opponents.

5). Georgia really turns out good linebackers. Faced SEC level of competition but struggled to generate numbers warranting such a high pick. Would look more for a player with plus sack numbers here & 0.5 over 13 games just doesn't get her done.

5). Rodney Smith, WR has only three TD's. Not sure if he is such a red-zone target with that low of production in College? What's he 6-6 220? developmental player @ best could be a bigger version of un-drafted Texan LeStar Jean?

6). Travis Carrie has the option of petitioning for a medical red shirt, out for 2012 season due to severe shoulder injury during fall camp. Not sure how your coming up with these picks, very different I'll grant you that. He could be a very good late addition if he passes medical.

7). Tutogi is a stump in the Vonte Leach mold. Would be fine with this pick.

7). I got killed for taking Fauria in the 5th can't imagine late 7th but oh well. I'm thinking late 4th early 5th, will have to adjust my own as well.

I'll give you high marks for originality. Your draft board is ranked a lot different from my own but the most troubling aspect is your not taking two primary needs seriously, Nose Tackle & Offensive Tackle, then waiting to address WR thinking a 1st/2nd rd. talent drops to end of 3rd who is a pot head & that the Texans would select him anyway. Kind of bizarre but well worth the read, & feedback of a valued contributor in our draft forums who takes the time to post even with a banged up hand.

nice first mock mate.
only points i have is rogers and fauria.
Rogers is a great prospect but i doubt the texans take him. I guess it depends how you mock i.e. WHat you think should happen or what the texans will do??

On fauria like the the others have said i think he goes earlier.

overall good mock as it makes the team better in an array of areas.
