While driving home this evening, I caught the end of 610am saying that there was quite a squabble today. From what I understand, newly aquired Victor Riley was one of the parties involved.
I was just curious to see if anyone else listened to that segment, and can fill us in some more on what actually happened.

Also, Todd Washington left the field today with his knee taped. Nothing to be alarmed at, said 610.
 
Since I know nothing of our newest player (Riley), is he known for "squabbles"?
Post more info when you find it 84. Or, anyone else here who comes across it! :)
 
Let's see there are these really big, macho guys. These guys are in competition for jobs that pay at least $200,000 a year, if not mulit-millions of dollars. The occupaction they are engaged in requires them to be aggressive and physical....hmmm a fight breaks out between two of these 80 or so guys.

Boy...that's really surprises me. :rolleyes:

Thats what they were saying on 610. That there is obviously more depth, and battles throughout. They were praising that there was a fight because that means that players are actually worried about their positions this year more than previous years.

I don't think they have any knowledgable people on 610 on the subject of
football. I think a lot of their subject matter and thoughts origionates from
places like this Board. They can be entertaining but knowledgable, not really.
As far as fights, you have to understand this is the NFL and a lot of the guys
who make it to this level are pretty aggressive to start with and they get
real aggressive when they are competing for a spot on the roster like they are doint right about now. I'm thinking Peek by himself was already in 2 or 3 fights by this time last year.
And finally, you can get depth with mores bodies, what we need is
quality depth. We got that in the DL with our top pick and at RB with our #3; but the the OL (to include TE) - don't see any quality additions there. And
the LB corp is a huge question mark - talking about the starters.

I'm not huge on encouraging fights, but like AT said they are going to happen. If it was going to happen to someone I like hearing it was Wand--maybe he is really trying to push hard on improvement this year.

Last year there was a pretty good squable in training camp during LB on RB blocking drills--if I recall correctly it was between Peek and Norris.
 
Well as far as the LB corp goes, the backups have a chance to make the starting lineup this year too so that should make for a real fight. The WR position I think is going to be good one also. With the exception of Andre Johnson everyone is fighting to either get a higher status or to keep their job. Bradford could get beat out, Gaffney has Armstrong down his neck and then you throw in Starling, Thomas and Mathis, and Swinton in there who are pretty much fighting for the #4 and #5 if there will be a #5.
 
The Texans carried six WRs on the 53 most of last season, (including Moses). They may do the same this year considering the depth they seem to be developing at the position. WR 5 and 6 are expected to excel on special teams.

A lot can change, but as it stands now, after AJ, Gaff, Bradford, Armstrong, and Mathis, I'd say Swinton and Starling are fighting it out for #6. Mathis will really have to surprise for Bradford not to be on the final roster. I don't think Starling is ready yet to compete at #2 but he has the speed and quickness. His future will depend on how he adapts to return teams. Will we use our starting CB as a punt returner? I'm thinking yes. I agree that Armstrong is pushing Gaffney although I think Gaff is still ahead of him. They are very similar in what they offer. Gaffney has the hands and is more adept at finding the soft spots whereas Armstrong can make spectacular catches and isn't afraid to go into traffic. I like our WR corps. Hmmm, this topic might make a good article.

Did you mean to say that Mathis will have to surprise to take Bradfords starting position ?
Whats the inside skinny at this point on Mathis ? Is he
more than a track guy ? Are the Texans impressed, upbeat about picking
him, or the verdict still out ?
 
I think i heard them say Robaire and Wand, could be wrong.

I think training camp fights can be a good thing, especially in this case. If Wand were involved, it makes it even better. Shows he's got some "fight".

That's where I was going with that, yes. I highly doubt Mathis makes that kind of impact at WR, especially early in the season. It may take a full season for him to get comfy. But ultimatley, that's why they drafted him ... as a CB replacement unit ... a burner opposite AJ (who can get open and can catch the ball, given Carr has time to throw) :rolleyes:
 
I think the verdict could still be out on Mathis until the pads come on. I saw a segment on Fox the other day about Bradford and man he looked alot leaner and faster this year.
 
since none of us have actually seen Mathis play its all pure speculation to envison his role with the Texans his rookie year. but what the heck I'll chime in my :twocents:

first off the Texans already had a similar player last year as a rookie in Starling, I thought he showed some promise in the pre-season but he was never heard from agian except for special teams. now with a year of non-nfl game experience but being around the system and practicing he should be way ahead of Mathis at least in the beginning. from a size & speed standpoint alone they are almost mirror images of one another.

secondly this is one of the more talented groups on the Texans, but even with another WR drafted the depth in other areas is catching up so on average Casserly has done a nice job of building depth. with the exception of LT & TE (both impact the OL) the Texans no longer have the look & feel of an expansion franchise. look for year 5 to find more fixed solutions with 1st pick a LT & 2nd/3rd pick TE.

We NEED an enforcer type to return cheap shot for cheap shot when we play the Jagoffs. Closeline Carr, Leftwich gets closelined, hit our return man when he is out of bounds, return the favor next time we punt to the Jagoffs.

our how bout we just let them make stupid penalties, and the Texans play their game. Why stoop to another teams level, and give them field position, not smart. the best payback is winning the game, not beating people up

As I recall, Robaire Smith knocked Leftwich silly in the first quarter of our last game against the Jags and rendered him useless for the rest of the game.

We will just have to disagree on this point.

IMHO its called gaining respect or instilling fear in the opponent, or just plain self defense. Some actions are worth the risk.

If you get hit in the mouth do you not retaliate because you are afraid of the consequences, might go to jail for assault?

Leaner than last year? Dude was running about 5% body fat already. If he goes any lower he is going to turn into beef jerky.

self defense is protecting yourself or fighting back when a fight is occuring, self defense is not, "hey they did it to us, lets do it right back" thats called being a dummy and lowering yourself to another teams pothetic standards. Someone pointed out Robaire taking out Leftwich, Robaire did that within the legal rules of the game, and im pretty sure after that he got some respect. To gain respect and instill fear, you dont have to resort to cheap shots, you can play your game and get after people, AJ gets his respect, and a lot of coaching staffs and their teams are probably afraid of what he can do if they dont double cover him... did andre ever hit anyone, ever start a fight?
 
I believe Capers has mentioned the importance of keeping your composure and the benefit of it when in the playoffs.

i dont know if youd call it getting knocked silly, lol lefty was on the ground and smith kinda pounced on him. but hey whatever works, ya know !!!
 
and i like to see a lil pushing maybe a punch or two thrown, it gets the players blood pumping, we should see plenty of that this year with peek starting (i cant wait) :boxing:

No, never did see AJ punch anyone, but I did see him yank a cornerback to the ground with one hand one time. That guy is really strong.

im a saints fan, riley played for us last year, he was involved in several fights and 1 occasion (it was 2 actually if im not mistaken) or rookie DE will smith knowcked him out in the loker room

he also arrived in new orleans on a suspension for ramming his car into his wifes car

he also false started a min of 2 times a game

Make that a minimum of .5 per game. He had 8 false starts last year. The year before he had just 1.

Something clearly did go wrong with the guy last year though as in 2004 he gave up 11 sacks with 8 false starts and 3 holds while in 2003 he gave up just 2 sacks with 1 false start and 2 holds.
