Browns | Faine free to seek a trade
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 07:38:10 -0800

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns have given OC Jeff Faine permission to seek a trade, an NFL source said Monday, March 20. If the Browns can trade Faine, OL LeCharles Bentley will start at center. If they can't trade him, Bentley, a two-time Pro Bowler, most likely will move to guard, and Faine will be the center.

I brought up this guy in a thread earlier(not the most poular) ,but the guy must be pretty good if what they say is true. That if he stays they will move Bentley to guard. Do you think he is worth a look by the Texans?

I offer a Sixth round pick, and that is all. If they accept we get a guy that can start at C if not no big deal and we move on. Not sure on what his price tag would be and how he would want to renup on his contract. He will come in cheap similar to Buchanon and hopefully can perform. The guy is solid at C, but has some injury concerns. Definately will fit the system though.

610 reported they were bringing in seth McKinney to look at him for center. He was a heck of a player in highschool and college. He also started for the phins for a while. So we ould end up with McKinney at center anyway.

Already being discussed in another thread.

Has anyone heard anything on Cowart? I take it an offer was not made, or they were so far apart, that nothing got serious, since I haven't heard anything.

I haven't heard anything, nor have I heard him visiting anyone else so it's a mystery on that aspect. Another thought is maybe they are judging to see what his worth is on the market you know.

Texans after Cowart
<Mar. 21> Cowart is close to signing with the Texans, according to multiple reports. The Texans are switching to a 4-3 defense, and have been in the market for an experienced middle linebacker.

The Redskins have also expressed interest in Cowart.

That was posted on ESPN NFL Insider Rumors.

I don't want to be the pessimist and generally am pretty optimistic about all the changes this offseason BUT...

I am not ready to drink the Walter/Mathis battle for no.2 WR Kool-aid yet.

Does anyone know Kyle Shanahan's record in developing WR's and teaching them what to do and what not to do? Does he have a success with a particular set of WR's that really helped them out?

If he was in TB, what happened this last year to the development of Michael Clayton? After seeing how free agency is going for WR's, coaching our WRs position is going to be that much more critical to the passing game's success. AJ needs to step up and mentor/lead the WR group and I am not sure he is ready to do that.

HEY HEY KOOLAID.... DRINK IT DRINK IT!!!!

LMAO - Kyle Shanahan can teach them how not to make a complete fool out of yourself by having all night benders and becoming the shame of your family's good name......he has experience to lean on for this!

As for his "Development" of WRs??? I doubt he knows much about this, other than playing a hiccup at UT-A.

That is what I was afraid of... we obviously don't have a polished WR, besides Andre, and he could use some help. It would then be up to Andre and whatever coaching we have to help out other WRs... I would sacrifice some athleticism in a no.2 to get a 'crafty veteran'.

Well didnt Shanahan coach the Bucs receivers?

In his first season with the Bucs, Shanahan helped rookie Michael Clayton establish franchise rookie records for receptions and receiving touchdowns. He also helped receiver Joey Galloway finish seventh in the NFL in receiving yardage in 2005...

Well he obviously knows enough to be given a shot at coaching. I like the credentials he has so far. You dont have to be a standout player to be an outstanding coach. :twocents:

I really hope we can lure Burleson....if we did that and got Cowart....our draft would be so much clearer. We would almost be able to guess the pics on this board as they happened.....even though i'm sure we will try to with or without those signings.

Also for anyone who cares...this also from ESPN

Putzier never was a favorite of coach Mike Shanahan, but it is tough to argue his productivity. Behind Rod Smith, Putzier was the only consistent weapon the Broncos had in the passing game, and his 37 receptions will be missed. He is just an average blocker, but he has above average speed, runs crisp routes and knows how to get open. He will be a solid addition for a team looking for a versatile TE in the passing game.

Scouts Inc. report on Cowart

He is experienced and versatile - can play all three LB spots. He reads his keys quickly and won't take many false steps. He's instinctive and tough. At his best working laterally and forward. He still has decent range vs. the run. Is a downhill striker with good power at the POA. He is instinctive in zone coverage but he's not as quick or smooth. He seems tentative in his turns. He lacks catch-up speed and he doesn't cover nearly as much ground as he once did. He has marginal ball skills and has never been a playmaker in coverage. He shows good diagnostic skills on the blitz but he lacks ideal burst through the LOS when turned loose on the blitz.

Latest update I've seen (http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/sports/14147168.htm):
Texas two-step: Free-agent middle linebacker Sam Cowart visited Houston and could receive a contract offer from the Texans, who are switching to a 4-3 defense.

Cowart also was contacted by the Washington Redskins, but no visit was scheduled.

Wide receiver Nate Burleson, a restricted free agent who has visited Seattle, had been scheduled to meet with the Texans, but that visit was canceled.

Burleson will probably come this way now though because of the battle between seattle and minnesota and now he may come cheap...Reschedule a visit fast!. As for cowart. Hes a decent player and I wouldnt mind having him as depth for our LB core.

I dunno about Burleson, there was a lot of hype about him and he just never put it together to become a valuable 2nd option, Plus it will cost us a 3rd round selection... Id rather sign Quincy Morgan for a lot less money and no compensation, similar production except for the year culpepper was on fire, even then only 68 receptions that year, I just dont see why he would be a big pickup for us.

Or as I posted in the Moulds topic.

What about Javon Walker? He's in the same situation as Moulds except he's younger and has a smaller contract. And has better numbers than Burleson. But he is looking to get paid not to mention what the Packers are looking for in compensation. He insists that he will not play for them in 2006.

Hmmm...now they have a visit with Winborn.

i looked his profile up on NFL.com and he's another center from arizona st. at about 6'3'' 305lbs i wonder if he's able to really move well like kubiak wants or if he's one of sherman's more traditional guys...either way if he can play guard i would welcome him in due to our lack of depth

Anyone heard anything on Steve McKinney's brother's visit to Htown? I heard it was scheduled for Monday or Tues?

I haven't heard of the GB lineman, whats the word on him? As far a Cowart, all i know is that he is starter caliber, and we have a shortage of that.

I was kind of curious why we brought him in in the fisrt place. The Chronicle said he plays DT for the Pats and I thought we were heavy at DT and it was DE's we really needed.

He is an offensive guard, not DT. The paper was wrong, don't know why they put that. It would have been nice today to have read something about his and Winborn's visits.

FYI Seth McKinney reportedly resigned with the Dolphins. I wonder if there have ever been two brothers playing side by side in NFL?

Meloy, yes there has several times you can go to houstonprofootballtalk.com and they talk about them in an interview with McKinney. The worst part of this is they got a solid starting Center for cheap, he is a 2 year deal worth a little over 3M. We could have done that. Maybe they are sold on Hodgdon and feel we will get competition in the draft or later in FA.

It's from wednesday but I just read this in an article:

The Vikings filled one hole when they signed Leber, who played on the strong side in San Diego, but they still need to find a starting middle linebacker, with Sam Cowart expected to leave via free agency.

Maybe he'll sign with us :redtowel:
