ESPN.com says it's Williams

ESPN.com reports the Texans are focusing Friday contract talks on Mario Williams, not Reggie Bush. There were conflicting reports Wednesday that a deal with Bush was close. But Len Pasquarelli reports the Texans haven't contacted Bush in over 24 hours, and have negotiated with Williams all Friday. A FoxSports.com report claims the Texans have told Williams he will be the first pick. Houston GM Charlie Casserly denies that. NFL Network's Adam Shefter reports that Houston plans to trade back into the first round to draft a running back if they take Mario Williams with the first pick.
The Texans have an extra third-round pick to dangle and could be interested in Laurence Maroney or LenDale White. Both players look like great fits for coach Gary Kubiak's imported zone blocking scheme from Denver.

I just heard that as well. Oh this is going to be a PR nightmare for the Texans. I know there are people that said to take Williams but the fans at a whole either wanted Bush or Young. I have a feeling this is Casserlys last act because the Texans front office is going to be crucified over this. And I feel bad for Williams as well because there is going to be an extremly large contigent of fans that are going to not like him over this.

Texans sign Williams
April 28, 2006
HoustonTexans.com

HOUSTON - The Houston Texans have signed North Carolina State DE Mario Williams and plan to take him with the first overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Williams becomes the second Texans number one pick in team history.

Williams (6-6, 291) becomes the first North Carolina State player to be taken with the first pick in the NFL draft. QB Roman Gabriel was the top overall pick of the AFL draft and went second overall in the NFL draft in 1962.

In three seasons for the Wolfpack, Williams started 34 of 36 games. He totaled 175 tackles, 55.5 tackles for loss and 26.5 sacks. His 2005 season will go down as one of the greatest in NC State history by a defensive end. He set school records in sacks, with 14.5, and tackles for loss, with 27.5. Williams’ sack total ranked fourth nationally and he finished second in tackles for loss.

Williams earned Freshman All-America honors in 2003 after recording 56 tackles (34 solos), five sacks, 13 tackles for loss, seven quarterback pressures, five passes defensed, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. As a junior in 2005, he was voted the Wolfpack’s Most Valuable Player by his teammates and was a consensus All-American.

Williams, who hails from Richlands, N.C., has been compared by many to Carolina DE Julius Peppers, who was drafted second overall in 2002. Following a stellar prep career at Richlands High School where he was an All-State and All-South selection, Williams’ high school jersey (number 82) was retired.

The Texans have spent their past four first round draft picks on the defensive side of the ball. DT Travis Johnson was the 16 th overall selection in 2005, and CB Dunta Robinson and LB Jason Babin were taken with the 10 th and 27 th in the 2004 draft. The Texans’ first pair of first-round picks were offensive players—QB David Carr in 2002 (1 st overall) and WR Andre Johnson in 2003 (3 rd overall).

Williams’ signing marks the second time that the Texans have had their first-round pick signed before the draft. QB David Carr agreed to a contract prior to becoming the Texans’ first-ever draft choice in 2002. The Texans felt that agreeing to terms with the top pick was important in order to ensure that the player will begin training camp along with the rest of the team.

Oh, come on! There will be an extremely large contingent of fans who are not going to be happy no matter who they pick. Bottom line: Too many people think the NFL is just a hyped up version of fantasy football. It isn't. Good line play wins games and at this point the Texans have absolutely nobody who can rush the passer with the possible exception of Peek -- who sure isn't a Pro Bowler.

Yeah but there is no contigent to back up the Williams pick at all. And while I know no player in the picked in the draft is a sure thing if Williams is a bust and Bush lives up to expectations this is just going to be Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan situation all over again.

So, we passed over Bush for a guy that was benched one game last year for LACK OF EFFORT!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

If the Texans took Bush and he flopped and Williams succeeded, then you could say the same thing. The Texans drafted to fill a weakness -- that was a wise thing to do. The "contingent" thing is nothing more than media hype. The media was playing fantasy football while the Texans were playing real football. Since the spectators hear only the talking heads, then they get conditioned to think that a particular pick is the "smart" pick when it isn't. Davis, Carr and Johnson are good skill players. They needed help elsewhere and Williams is a good pick. Reliant Stadium will be filled no matter what.

When was Mario ever benched? Mario has more starts in his career than Reggie Bush, by a long shot.

Texans just got a whole lot better! You win with DEFENSE!
Yeah - but don't you have to score points on offense? DD HAS to stay healthy unless they think Eric Moulds can do it all himself...

looking for a link. I remember reading this about 4 weeks ago and ruling him out.

Did'nt Mario get all his sacks in half a season or something? I read that somewhere ...
Anyway, if that is true he is unconsistant. Seems kinda like a workout warrior to me. Nobody mentions him before the cobine then BAM!!! he's number 1.

Didn't the Eagle Fans freak out when they took McNabb instead of Williams. They only made one Super Bowl Apperence and Three NFC Championship games. Lets let the Profesionals do there job and be happy that our team has improved.

I can't find the link - so I might be mixing him up with Watson or someone else.
But, there are plenty of articles (see previous link posted) questioning his intensity. I can only imagine it getting worse after he gets his check for 26.5 mil.
