Running back Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leader rushing, will retire this offseason, sources told ESPN's John Clayton and Chris Mortensen.

A league source told Mortensen it was possible that Smith could announce his retirement Thursday in Jacksonville.

Smith, 35, played 13 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys, and the last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. He becomes an unrestricted free agent in March.

Smith was in Jacksonville Monday, where he was at a dinner to honor past Super Bowl MVPs. When asked about retiring, he told the Dallas Morning News that he wanted to retire as a Cowboy, but stopped short of saying he would retire this offseason.

"I will, in some way, shape or form," Smith said about retiring as a Cowboy. "There's always a chance (of not playing in 2005). Somebody has got to want me, and if they don't want me, then what? ... I want to play. I want to do what I want to do."

Smith may sign some sort of ceremonial one-day deal with Dallas. In recent years, other veteran star players have returned to the teams where they spent their glory days.

The St. Paul (Minnesota) Pioneer Press speculated that Smith could join an investment group that is trying to buy the Vikings.

After an injury-plagued first season with the Cardinals in 2003, Smith rushed for 937 yards and nine touchdowns last season in 15 starts.

I will lose respect for him if he retires 3 days before the Superbowl and upstages the biggest game of the year...

Wow pretty quick on those judgments. Basically he is hoping someone will pick him up again for next year and if no one does then he wants to get over it and get officially retired so he can join into an effort to buy a team like the Vikings. If I was him, I wouldn't worry about upstading the super bowl either and try to handle my own business.

Who would think Emmitt retiring (something long overdue and expected) would upstage the Super Bowl?

Cowboy are not Emmit is one of my all-time favorited nfl players and has always been class act. If he does retire it has nothing to do with the superbowl and I wish him the best of luck with whatever he decides to do. I just wish he could of retired a cowboy(really did they ever replace him with anybody better before j.jones, hambrick :loser george-over the hill).

ya know if he decides to retire the day of the superbowl and takes all the spot light off the game, well than maybe they should reschedule the game then. Emmitt was and will always be one of the greatest RBs of all times !

I'm not a Cowboy's fan. One thing I will say is that Emmitt is the model of doing more with less. He definitely isn't one of the most physically gifted running backs off all time, yet he is the most productive to date.

I'm sure the eagles and pats are hoping he retires this week, take most of the media off their backs with their nutty questions.
I'm also a fan of Smith one of the great backs in the league, too bad he couldnt retire as a cowboy...

just goes to show you how sorry jerry jones is after emmitt broke the record as a cowboy, jones didnt feel he needed him anymore.

Actually Jerry and Emmitt have a very good relationship; Emmitt wanted to continue playing as the feature back and the team/management felt that he would command a high salary they could not afford and so they decided to go in a different direction.

I would bet money that if Emmitt does retire they will find some way to have him signed back as a Cowboy and he will retire as such.

hmmmmm you sure jerry has a good relation ship with anybody ? Doesnt seem possible to me. And if ya look at it he problably should of been the featured running back still, Hambrick sucked and george did NO better, and emmitt had a prety good season considering it is Arizona !

I am positive Jerry and Emmitt have a good relationship. I heard Emmitt say so in interviews on TV.

I don't think Emmitt would have been playing much with JJ there but I imagine in retrospect Jerry would not have let Emmitt go if something could have been worked out. I have read where Bill Parcells did not want Emmitt so he left but I don't know if that is just conjecture or fact because I have never heard him say that.

They have patched things up over time but Emmitt was pretty upset when he left. The Cowboys only offered him league minimum. He didn't want to break the bank and even hinted he would play for between 1 and 2 mil. I am sure in hindsight they wish they had signed him to the same contract as the Cardinals.

The Cardinals deal with Emmitt was for 7+ million for 2 years I think.

I am not sure because I have never heard this from his lips but I suspect Bill did not want him and that was obviously a wrong decision. If he would have played for a million or more and stayed with the Cowboys I guess that would have been a bargain considering Hambrick was a big nothing and only this year they have a hint of a good running game with JJ coming on.

I saw a whole ton of Emmitt games in person. Special back, never hurt and a real good team leader. He's one of my alltime favorite players. He'll be missed.

I heard on the radio he is interested in going into a group of investors interested in buying the Vikings. I cannot remember the main guy's name but they said if it goes thru he will be the NFL's first minority owner.

the NFL lost one of the best running backs ever today...as much as I don't like him, I can honestly admit I will miss him from the game. What a better replacement for Emmitt than Maurice Clarett! real good for the game

Well, they better not talk about Smith during the Super Bowl. I want more FredEx!!! As much as I hate some of MLB's rules and regulations, the one I like is the gag they put on big annoucements during All-Star and World Series week. It makes sure all the attention is on the game. Smith wanted the attention cause he didnt get any his two years in Arizona...

And I guess Smith is the exception to "No player is bigger than the game"

OK why the heck would you dislike the guy and why would you even think about comparing him to Maurice Clarett?

First of all the game hasn't even happened yet. After about a couple of days the media has already ran out of things to discuss and are praying for some stupid player to say something stupid(drop dead fred, that should be his nickname). I would rather hear from Emmit Smith than some dumbass wanna be wr, or what god has told T.O. Emmit deserves his day and if they do talk about him during the superbowl its only because he's the all time leading rusher, a great player, and a great person.

The game hasnt been played yet and thats the point. Wait till after the game. Don't take away press from players and coaches that finally got to the big game. Smith had his time. No one annouced anything to take away the attention he loves when he played in all those super bowls.

On drop dead Fred: Fair enough, but T.O. and FredEx are playing this week. I'd rather hear from a guy playing this week then I guy who is hanging them up. No matter how good he was...

I don't really think a little 45 minute press conference from the leading rusher in NFL history is going to take away from another short film clip on ESPN of T.O. running a 2 yard pattern testing his metal ankle.

Years from now we'll all be wishing we had more Emmitt Smith's playing. I will anyway....

Bout damn time... I hate to see a great player lose respect because he stayed in too long.

Jerry Rice
Michael Jordan
Emmit Smith

Emmit Smith has been a horse all of his career. I will miss him. I think that he still holds a couple of records at the University of Florida. Emmit has been a very positive role model for young kids everywhere. Class act all of the way.

E. Smith is a great player. Seems like a decent man too, despite being a cowboy. (sorry couldn't help it.)
Here's an update - Emmitt is currently thanking Juanita the hot dog vendor and Jethro the Beer man so he's on the J's. Your next update will come at halftime of the Super Bowl when he should be on the W's.

He even thanked me. I bought a bobble head at one point in his career. So he felt that a thank you was in order. ;)

Congratulations to Emmitt as he enters the next stage of his life. I wonder at which Cowboys game will he be honored.

Emmitt was not traded. He was picked up as a free agent by the Cardinals on a 2 year deal which he fulfilled. The Cardinals choose not to sign him this year and that's when he decided to retire. He said he didn't want to have to move his family all around and well it was time anyway.

you know fiddy at the age of 17 i wouldn't expect you to understand the whole emmitt smith thing since you probably aren't old enough to remember half of his career...that's obvious with statements like i want more fredex...i'm cheering for the eagles but i hope harrison lays that loud mouth dissapointment out...the guy was one of the many first round busts the eagles had at reciever...the guy is a waste of talent

emmitt smith is the league's all-time rushing leader...he ranks in the top three, or five depending on who you are, of all-time best runningbacks...anyone who wants to argue with that go ahead but you're argueing to a brickwall when it comes to me on that subject...the guy has been a class act all his career...i'm happy to see him retire on his own accord and not because of injury

I've heard several sports reporters/personalities say Harrison is the "dirtiest" player in the game right now. It would seem to me a bit stupid to try to rile him because you never know what he might do if that is true.

As for Emmitt his career was beyond outstanding when you consider all he did, the fact that he was rarely injured and missed games and the heart he showed when he played. I'll never forget the game when he separated his shoulder and went out and won the game for the Cowboys. That takes more than talent...that takes heart. I'll really miss Emmitt. He's one of my favorite players ever. Just like I'll miss Favre when he retires. Guys like that you don't replace.
