Emerald Bowl, San Francisco; 8 PM ET; ESPN

UCLA (7-5) vs Florida State (6-6)
UCLA enters the Emerald Bowl on a huge high after knocking cross-town nemesis Southern California out of the national title game, upsetting the Trojans 13-9 on the final weekend of the regular season. And there was nothing fluky about the Bruins win over the Trojans; indeed, UCLA has one of the better pass rushes in the country featuring DEs Justin Hickman (#17, 6-1, 260) and junior tweener Bruce Davis (#44, 6-3, 230) each of whom had 12.5 sacks this fall. The Bruins also have a good one in junior DT Kevin Brown (#75, 6-2, 297). In fact, ‘junior’ is the key word for the Bruins as the defense also includes a couple more emerging junior types in CB Trey Brown (#23, 5-9, 190) and LB Christian Morton (#33, 6-0, 220). Same story on offense where the best prospect is junior OG Shannon Tevaga (#71, 6-3, 310). Indeed, other than DE Hickman, the Bruins’ best prospect for the 2007 draft is PK Justin Medlock (#7, 6-0, 185) who connected on 26 of 30 FG attempts this fall including 2 for 2 from beyond 50 yards.

Coming off a disappointing 8-5 mark in 2005, the Seminoles were supposed to reload this year, but instead staggered to through a miserable 6-6 season, arguably the worst in head coach Bobby Bowden’s career. And after dominating the early going at the 2006 draft where 4 former Seminoles were taken in the first 19 picks, FSU is likely to more of a bystander this coming April. Indeed, aggressive MLB Buster Davis (#7, 5-11, 240) is likely the only Seminoles’ senior with a legitimate chance to being taken on the first-day this year. Meanwhile OT Mario Henderson (#75, 6-6, 305), RB Lorenzo Booker (#28, 5-10, 195), WR Chris Davis (#5, 6-0, 180) and DE Darrell Burston (#92, 6-2, 240) should get some later round consideration. In fact, the Emerald Bowl represents a major opportunity for OT Henserdon to improve his stock as he certainly has NFL physical potential but hasn’t necessarily always been that productive. Going up against UCLA DEs Hickman and Davis, though, will give him a chance to shine. And whether the Seminoles ultimately actually have to start to rebuild next fall will depend to a large extent on the development of some great young players coming along including emerging junior OLB Lawrence Timmons (#83, 6-3, 220), along with sophomores like QB Drew Weatherford (#11, 6-3, 220), 6-6 WR Greg Carr (#89, 6-6, 200), and CB Tony Carter (#15, 5-9, 170), along with star freshman DB Myron Rolle (#3, 6-2, 215).

loved watching the Bruins out play the Trojans all day long especially that aggressive defensive line. the match-up against another NFL OT prospect is one to watch, they made Sam Baker (USC) look slow and destroyed him with speed on the edge :snobord:

The UCLA OT is on my day two wish list. The Arizona St. OLT is not. Easy to block when you got an all american TE as your wingman.

I will not be able to watch as it is my anniversary tonight so please tell me what y'all think of the fire plug, Buster Davis.

I'll tell ya what happens.

You know I will be watching this game.

Anyone else watching it should watch Timmons the FSU OLB. Also Tony Carter is a great corner...he is only a sophomore. Everybody should see Myron Rolle, true freshman safety and #1 recruit out of highschool.

Booker the FSU RB dances way too much so dont spend too much time watching him thinking he would be a good RB for us cause he would not be.

The sophomore running back Antone Smith is worth watching though. He is a true sophomore so he can't come out (along with Tony Carter(TC)).

As KT said...Buster Davis will be alot of fun for you guys to see. He plays alot like Meco...his blitzing up the middle is almost identical. He should have double degit tackles in this game.

Booker looks pretty good if you ask me. Shifty and fast. Anyone know where he's projected as of now?

He looked ALOT like Meco!!! And that's pretty exciting b/c the announcers were talking about how he would most likely slip to the 2nd round b/c of his size.

As we all know via Meco, it's all about the size of the fight in the dog not the size of the dog in the fight. And this kid looks like he's got alot of fight in him. He was going all out on every down and seemed to have good speed, rushing ability and a nose for the ball.

I would like to get him in the 2nd IF he is the BPA as I'm not a draft expert.

I've also heard Rufus Alexanders' name thrown out there alot for this pick...who do the "experts" on the board think is the better LB ? And is either even look to be the BPA for us at that pick?

P.S.- HAPPY ANNIVERSARY KT !!!!

went throught the first half only this morning & was very impressed with several FSU players, mostly towards the future but the match-up I mostly focused on was OT Mario Henderson vs UCLA DE Hickman & Davis.

has prototype NFL large frame 6-6 307 lbs (same size as D'Brick) plays with a wide base (like D'Brick) seems to have good reach & some hand punch technique. moves well down the field, sets up blocks & finishes, has classic wide girth to impede speed rushers. UCLA does not have a big physical end so not sure how he would handle a bull rush or power tackle that he would face on Sundays, but my guess as is the case for most rookie tackles would have to hit the weight room and bulk up to about 330 (which he has the frame to do) work on technique (especially stengthen hand punch) footwork speed & base seem exceptional.

Mario Henderson looks like a project NFL LT but given time & patience could become a starter in 2-3 years in the NFL (or sooner if needed because of injurys). he has 2nd rd talent & measureables but lacks proven track record experience and needs work on overall game thus pushing him down to a 2nd day pick. from the 5th rd. on I'll be watching as the Texans select for Marios name to be called :)

DeMeco Ryans' knocks on his size were ignorant, he's the same size as many successful linebackers. His credible knock was his lack of athleticism. The scouts got too caught up in the combine to notice his instincts.

should also mention FSU super soph WR Greg Carr @ 6-6 210 lbs reminds me alot of San Diego Antonio Gates, also self proclaimed best basketball player on the team, plays a top level vertical game. you can't cover this kid, just a playmaker & touchdown machine. this is only a projection of course (still have 2nd half to watch) but so far IMO he projects to the NFL game, not to brag but I saw the same kinds of things last year in Shrine game from Marques Colston. big, excellent leaping ability w/reach takes the ball deep or over the middle in traffic, just keep an eye out for next year :ok:

Can't run in between tackles at all...that's the best I ever seen him run. Honestly he is just fast and tries to turn the corner or run a touchdown on everyplay.

I love Greg Carr...did you see him getting frustrated during the game? Drew Weatherford doesn't get him the ball enough...with a good QB Carr would be putting up real good numbers. 30 something catches on the season with 12 touchdowns.

Seminole could Booker's drop off be attributed to the fact that he is running behind a very young and inexperienced line this year?

anyone impressed with Florida State junior LB Lawrence Timmons? he has decided to skip his senior year and enter the 2007 NFL draft. The 6-3, 230-pound Timmons who has been timed in under 4.6 seconds for the 40, led the Seminoles with 18 tackles for loss this fall. would project somewhere around the Texans 2nd rd. pick.....

I find it strange, that Florida State had to travel all the way across the country to play in this BowlGame...... when a major point against an NCAA Div I play off is so teams(and fans) wouldn't have to travel.....

I wouldn't be surprised if he was the 1st LB taken in the draft.

NFL draft scout has now put Timmons 2nd behind the Penn St. guy with the first name of Paul .

I agree if he's better than a S, CB , and OT prospect in the 2nd ... take him .

No because in years past he ran the same way. Dances and dances looking for the touchdown on every play. Can't run for the 3 yards. He had a good game because he found the corner often + it was the best run blocking he has seen thus far this season. He won't be able to find the corner on every run play in the NFL so he will be forced to turn it upside, and when he is forced to do that he dances looking for something and usually does not pick up sufficient yards if any at all. Not to mention he will run backwards in an effort to reverse field and find yards. I have seen him do it twice successfully, and that was against Troy and Rice. He even did it in this game a few times.

Timmons is a pretty darn good linebacker. This was his first year really starting all the games because last year the three linebackers were: Nicholson Davis Sims. He is the first LB to earn the FSU "hit stick" in training camp in many years. That is exactly what he does too is "hit stick" people. Only weakness I really see on him is that sometimes he plays a bit too fast and overruns the play or outruns the ball carrier and tries to make arm tackles. Other than that he makes big plays...he has good speed...and he hasn't been in any trouble around here. Seems pretty quiet.

Give me a guy that you have to tone down any day over a guy you have to fire up .

Agreed. Same thing was said about Sims too. Only differences between Timmons and Sims is that Timmons is taller and also plays higher. Sims plays a bit faster (even if Timmons runs faster 40). And obviously Sims is more get in your face...Timmons is more stick you and leave you to pick yourself up. Also Timmons will make more tackles behind the LOS while Sims will make more overall tackles. SO far thats how its been.
