Ellington and Dylan Cole

@MrColeThompson

If #Texans do not have Coutee and Coates ready for Sunday’s matchup against the #Colts, they will carry three healthy receivers. DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, rookie Vyncint Smith

This is exactly why I was in favor of keeping Braxton.

But it doesn’t matter at all now. And didn’t matter then either.

OB is a loser coach and he’s going to do his loser thing no matter what. He’ll always be deficient in one area or another.

I really wanted Ellington to succeed and contribute as the 3rd WR. Seems like recurring hamstring problems will prevent him from ever becoming a reliable option.

I'd rather keep all TE's to max protect the way Davenport been playing
Griffin almost got Watson killed last game. So far, other than MyCole Pruitt, who can run block well, but not so much pass block, we still don't have a real blocking TE. The only real pass block TE we've seen this season was on the PS briefly.......Matt Lengel.

Once a player begins showing up on the Injury Report with hamstrings, chances are they become familiar faces on the Injury Reports later on.

Early in his career, Emmitt Smith had nagging hamstring problems. He changed his diet, started taking care of himself and even started seeing a chiropractor 2-3 times a week. I wonder what are some of these players doing to minimize their recurring hamstring problems.

Define early? Emmitt led the league rushing 4 of his 1st 6 years and missed 3 games, 2 of those in a holdout. He also famously carried a 6-7% body fat% in competition with 5-6% Irvin.

Emmitt had tight hamstrings which is a whole different thing than injured.

He played 15 years. So early would be years 1-5?

1995: https://www.deseretnews.com/article/397629/HAMSTRING-FRUSTRATES-SMITH-AND-COWBOYS.html

Like I said, tightness, tweaks. In his 1st 6 seasons he missed one game due to injury, arguably none - Emmitt missed game 16 in 1995 when he already had 1773 yds and the Cowboys were playing for nothing.

Only a few conclusions, all these 4-8 week guys are pansies, Emmitt had super-healing or we're talking tweak v. injury.

Your 2nd article there, 5 days later Emmitt went 35 att, 150 yds, 3 tds. Damn if he hadn't been injured.

Looks like Patrick caught this too........posted 1 hour ago:

Some of the more vicious QB hits on Watson have come from Ryan Griffin missing blocks in the pass game.

Tightness and tweaks sounds like nagging hamstring problems. There was a playoff game where he came out in the first quarter because of the hamstring. If you read my original post, I said "nagging hamstring problems". Beside getting me to reluctantly talk about the Cowboys, I don't know the purpose of your argument. Pulls, tightness, tweaks. If it's a recurring issue, it's a problem.

Anyway, my point was Emmitt realized he had to proactively address his hamstrings and did a better job of taking care of his body. I wonder what are guys like Ellington doing to proactively address their recurring hamstring issues.

For Ellington there is nothing he can probably do to help prevent this problem. I know CnD has discussed the type of surgery he has had on his hamstring before, it's something most people don't come back from.

Many non‐modifiable and modifiable risk factors for recurrent hamstring injuries exist including, but not limited to: previous injury, increasing age, ethnicity, strength imbalances, inflexibility, and fatigue. Most hamstring injuries are of the hamstring muscle unit or where the muscle joins the tendon. Most recurrent injuries are in these same areas. Hamstring tendon tears are the ones that lead to surgical repair (partial tears that don't respond to conservative measures and complete tendon tears). Tendon repairs can be quite successful (~80%) while complete muscle tear repair does not carry a great success rate (partial muscles are treated conservatively)..........trying to place support sutures through muscle tissue is very close to trying to sew wet toilet paper...........the sutures notoriously pull through the tissues.

I believe you may have been referring to Andre Johnson's posts of mine criticizing his nontraditional surgical treatment. This involved not repairing, but clipping of one of his partially torn distal hamstring tendons, allowing it to retract..............thus loosing its power, and decreasing explosiveness............a resultant trait that was apparent for the remainder of Johnson's career.

Finally, recurrent hamstring muscle tears lead to scar tissue formation at the site of healing.............as healing proceeds, scar tissue contracts/shortens, thus further setting up the player for future hamstring tears.

[I will repost this in the Injury Thread]

Yea Ellington had a similar procedure done in which his semitendinosus muscle removed, leaving him with only 2 hamstring muscles. I remember reading articles when Ellington first got here, saying the Texans were comfortable taking a chance on him, because of their familiarity of his surgery due to AJ's surgery

@NFL: WR Rishard Matthews requests release from Titans: https://t.co/IWJFgszmmX (via @RapSheet) https://t.co/OfBRe34tdc

Possible pickup?
Mathews missed this past entire offseason and did not beginning practicing until week 1 for what the team called "an undisclosed minor injury." As it turns out, Mathews underwent knee meniscus repair surgery. His extremely limited snap count this season has not proven the effects of the knee surgery on his performance. The last 2 seasons he has been the Titans' most productive receiver, but in Dec, he missed 2 games with a hamstring, which probably set him up for the torn meniscus when he returned. It's interesting to note that the Titans actually extended his contract just the end of this past Aug.

So you're saying he'd be as productive as Ellington? Sign him up!

I don't think he would be interested. He was playing in Miami with Jarvis Landry and left because he wanted to go to a team where he's the #1. He gets to the Titans, they spent high draft picks on WRs. His playing time decreased and he asked for his release.

I don't think he would be happy being the 3rd WR on the Texans.
