Edgerrin James to the Dolphins?

"Seemingly before the final syllable of ''retirement'' was uttered about Ricky Williams, Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James was making it known he wouldn't mind coming home.

James told numerous people he would love to be traded to the Dolphins after Williams' announcement. While such a trade is highly unlikely this season -- the Colts, after all, are Super Bowl contenders -- James will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end.

Returning to South Florida, where James grew up and attended the University of Miami, would be his No. 1 choice. He has made it known he dislikes living in Indianapolis, preferring the sultry life of South Beach.

James certainly appears to be the most appealing option among running backs the Dolphins could replace Williams with at some point."

What do yall think? This could open the door for the texans to take the division. Holla Back!
 
V, it says that they're not thinking about a trade this season, rather James may be going to Miami after this season when he's a free agent.
 
The Edge going to Miami isn't possible this season. The Dolphins don't have and can't afford to make a trade this season. I bet the Colts wouldn't mind getting some draft picks along with some veteran help in the D for the Edge since they pretty much have a back to fill in Edge's void.

The Colts aren't sweating Edge...next year the Edge and Harrison are free agents and they'll only be able to bring Harrison back and have Dominic Rhodes as starter in the RB position. It's in the phins best interest to just hold out this season to get thier back without sacrificing much. The Bills waited a season for their back in McGahee...the phins can do the same with Edge. It'll be a pleasant move for both since Edge wants to move back home and the phins are in desperate need for an established back with size and skills.
 
I don't think Wannstedt could afford another bad season. Williams was the dolphin's offense, he accounted for almost 40% of their total yards and they were depending on him to carry their offensive load. With their defense aging they can't really wait for the offense to improve in a couple of years. The dolphins haven't made it to the playoffs in the last two years, despit the fact that some "experts" had them as SuperBowl contenders. How long do you think it would take the public before they start calling for his job if they endure another losing season. A good trade would be Edgerrin James for DE Adewale Ogunleye who is having a problem signing an extension with the team. Colts still have Rhodes and the Dolphins still have Taylor and with the Colts trying to improve their defense having Ogunleye and Freeney chasing the QB could be an interesting sight.
 
If I were the Dolphins, I would throw Feeley into the water and see if he could swim this year. They know what Fiedler brings, but what can Feeley do with Chambers, Boston, and, perhaps, McMichael as targets?
 
If I was the Colts, I'd look long and hard at a trade of James for Adewale Ogunleye plus some future draft picks. I'd be nervous about James wanting out of Indy and being a UFA at the end of the season. Plus, with Manning and other weapons, I'd take my chances with less of a running game and a better defense. You'd think they'd be able to get pressure on the quarterback with those ends (Freeney and Ogunleye), important in a division with good quarterbacks.

The Colts probably cant afford James after this year anyways because Harrision is also a FA and they will probably keep him over James.

Could they afford Harrision and Adewale Ogunleye? Ogunleye might sign for less now to get a long term deal than James would. Also draft picks are cheaper than free agents, inevitably. If they get an extra pick(s) that could also help balance the books.

I really doubt they could afford Ogunleye and Harrision. Ogunleye is asking for major money and I doubt he signs for anything less and I dont see him being worried about James right now....

Nowadays, RB's are actually cheaper than DE's so since Ogunleye regards himself as at least as good a DE as James is a RB, then if they can't afford James, they can't afford Ogunleye.

Good infro, but I had a little different perspective. As I understand it, Adewale Ogunleye is looking at a one year deal, unless he gets the deal he wants (but hasn't been offered yet) from the Dolphins. A career ending injury and he gets zero after this year. He's not unrestricted until after one more year. The Colts could give him a longer term deal, with various bonuses (that will look huge to a guy looking at $455,000), that is cap friendly in the early years. This would be particularly true with some voidable years I believe. He might also sign with the Colts if he things they have a better chance for a Superbowl run.

It's all spec anyway, but I think the cap could work if everyone was interested in making it work, although as you point out franchise and tender offers are higher for DE's that RB's
 
I used the franchise numbers because Ogunleye seems to be making a bid for franchise type money. If he had any flexibility, something might be worked out and you would think the Colts might be interested in getting something this year rather than nothing next year. Even though Indy is trying to make a SB run this year, I could see them deciding upgrading the defense is more important to that effort than maintaining a running game that wasn't even as effective as the Texans' was last year anyway. Still wouldn't give it more than a 5% shot at happening.
 
I agree. Even 5% seems high, because there are so few blockbuster trades in the NFL (Portis-Bailey is really the exception), but I think it's interesting to look at the pieces and possibilities, even if consumation isn't likely.
