East West Shrine game

Saw this in the Draftguys blog from above. It's about my 2nd favorite RB in the Draft. Keep an eye out for this kid.

Tyrell Sutton(Northwestern) drew a call of “great hands great hands” from his coach when he scooped a low pass on the run. Sutton is clearly the most polished receiver of the RBs in this game. Sutton’s feet were also impressive - he instinctively got through the trash at the line of scrimmage. Sutton’s legs never stop churning, and he also knows when to just put his head down and take what’s there. He also had a heady play when Johnny Williams bobbled an interception and Sutton plucked it out of the air on the run, breaking a big play in 11 on 11s. He froze Matt Shaughnessy with a stop-start that drew oohs and aahs at the end of practice. Sutton also fielded punts, and he was singled out by Bobby Ross for his performance in a post-practice interview.

Tyrell Sutton may not make it as an every down back in the NFL because of his size, but there is no doubt in my mind that he can be a Reggie Bush-type receiver/returner.

He may not be as good as Bush but he will probably be drafted late and will provide plenty of bang for the bucks he will be making.

Is it bad that I noticed the Lakers jacket right away too? All joking aside, very cool pictures. That's cool about Kubiak too, good to hear he's a nice guy.

I was thinking he would be the 3rd down back we envisioned Slaton to be. Give the kid 6-12 touches a game, he will slip due to the injury this year, but as a 5th to 7th rounder, he would be a great addition to any team.

Someone gave me the jacket years ago and it keeps me very warm but other than that it ain't so.:):):)
Lose that jacket or I'm gona do it for ya'! :specnatz:

Hey, whos the favorite player(s) that you met?
Anybody who wants to play for the Texans like AA last year?

Gary, thanks for sharing the pictures. Pretty awesome! I must say I like the ones from last year with you and some cheer leaders. Steve

thanks for the link Earl. My hard disc is on it's last legs and had to dump PDF reader.

Jarron Gilbert(DT-San Jose State) threw opposing blockers to the ground with terrific strength more than once. He’s very disruptive and could be a nice cover 2 DT. He also got into the first real scrap of the Shrine Game practices.

This guy is Hooooungry. Parcells took the guy from Hampton #66 in the third last draft. Going to be interesting to see where Gilbert falls. He runs a good forty, some 3-4 team will gobble him up for a DE.

A DE. Might he be Houston bound?

He'd like to come here 76.

Well I have some now. How come you aren't going to go? You don't want to use them yourself? It should be a pretty cool game to watch.

I am going, I already had tickets with a VIP. My neighbor came over last night and offered these to me, I figured I could distribute them to a worthy soul. No takers tonight, I will go to the high school tomorrow and give them to the football coaches.

Brunner's Blog: Shrine Bowl Summary

The best part of Wednesday’s practices was that the weather warmed up some more and got close to 70. It was bright and sunny, and I actually got a sun burnt face. I’m definitely not complaining since it’s about 10 degrees back home.

Our staff got together Wednesday night and we discussed all of the players down here this week who maybe separated themselves or answered some concerns we had.

So, in addition to the guys I talked about the other day, I’ll highlight a few guys on each team who had pretty good practices in my opinion.

First up to mention on the West squad was Gartrell Johnson, a running back from Colorado State. He runs hard and showed some power with the football. He practiced hard every day this week.

Oregon State wide receiver Sammie Stroughter caught the ball very well this week, showed quickness, and the ability to get open. He might not be the fastest guy, but he’s quick and he’s able to separate himself from coverage. He also finishes as well by making the catch.

USC linebacker Kaluka Maiava also was impressive. He’s a typical USC linebacker, involved in all of the plays and around the ball a lot. He’s a good sized kid who can run.

A kid who some Bay Area football fans might already know about is defensive lineman Jarron Gilbert from San Jose State. He had a real nice week. He’s a big kid, has great size, and showed some quickness off the ball and pass rush skills. I only saw a couple days of practices on him but he looked pretty good and from what I hear, he shows up on tape as well. So, I’m interested to watch some tape of him and I expect that he’ll be at our local workout this spring.

Over on the East squad, I’ll first mention Curtis Taylor, a defensive back from LSU. He’s a big kid with some really good range. He was getting to the ball and blowing people up when he had the opportunity.

Well thanks for asking any way. I hope you enjoy the game. :texflag:

(From Wolf's post out of the Brunner Bolg).

"America, meet Gartrell Johnson. The stocky senior running back put on an absolute show, leading Colorado State to a 40-35 come-from-behind win over Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. The win was the Rams' first bowl win in seven years.
Johnson ran for a career-high 285 yards plus caught six passes for 89 -- giving him a whopping 374 total yards. Prior to Saturday, Johnson averaged 99 rushing yards per game in 2008.

This guy reportedly weighs 'bout 225 lbs and with his Colorado State pedigree
you know Kubiak was eyeballing him real close at E-W practices. I dunno, but
I'd say a definite candidate to be the compliment in the Texans' backfield to
Steve Slaton ?
I dunno how expensive he will be ? Fourth round ? Third round ? First day ?
BTW, keep those photos coming Gary. I enjoy them ! And thanks.

Glass, do you still have the tickets? Am I too late?

Gatrell Johnson/Colorado State: Johnson looked good all day. He was explosive, ran hard in shorts and was very tough. He has several good battles going against USC safety Kevin Ellison.

most of what I can find is about his Bowl game or the Shriner practice. I gotta say, an explosive guy listed at 225 in the later rounds is just what the doctor ordered.

He's definitely an interesting guy to look for, especially with the Colorado State pipeline thing we've been working on here. His combine is going to make or break him since his measureables are supposedly less than average. If he runs in the 4.55 range, he could be a viable option in the 4th or 5th, but if he runs 4.65+, he'll be a late round, UDFA type. Either way, I like him as a player and think he'd do well here.

I've been extremely busy @ work lately no time to review this wonderful event. there are several prospects to keep a close eye on however & I don't know how many people here realize this but several talented USC Trojans are in the mix, starting with CB Cary Harris who looks NFL ready (unlike Molden). Maiava Kaluka could develop into a Troy Polamualu looking OLB, his uncle is the Rock & he was voted Rose Bowl defense MVP yet remains unknown? How about Safety prospect Kevin Ellison 6-1 224 his Brother Keith is a LB for the Buffalo Bills. There are a whole bunch of second day prospects playing in this game, these are just a few interesting guys to watch out for later today & as their future unfolds working to play on Sundays. I'd never make it in the NFL I hate to work Sundays, can't stand to miss out on my Texans or NFL football in general :logo:

Molden isn't ready? He has good technique and speed.

why then didn't he play more?

not trying to rain on your parade man just the honest assesment of another poster. Antwaun Molden is a project they knew going forward would require extra time to develop. Great character with natural talent but only two years experience @ small time program Eastern Kentucky does not translate directly to the talent/skill level required to succeed in the NFL as a rookie. Breaking his leg doesn’t help his cause this off season for next year either…….I really hope he works out for the Texans but another CB with experience in the draft is still a viable option. I’m just pointing out look for some 2nd day help today @ the Shriners East West game like USC CB Cary Harris who will probably wind up being someones 3rd rd. pick in 09 :)

Good ?

It probably has something to do with Smith & Hoke knowing they were on a short leash.

They weren't willing to let the rookie go through growing pains.

He played special teams as well as a few plays on defense. Adibi didn't play until Greenwood was hurt, and it sure didn't look like he was struggling. Most coaches don't like playing rookies. You can't tell me Dominique Barber is worse than Brandon Harrison, it was just Barber's inexperience that left him on the bench most of the season.

sorry, not that impressive, which is why its called developmental situations to gain some playing expereince. you just made my point.............:smiliedance:

Adibi didn't play until Greenwood was hurt, and it sure didn't look like he was struggling.

Adibi didn't play because HE WAS HURT, don't you remember?

Most coaches don't like playing rookies.

wtf; like Steve Slaton or Joe Flacco..........:thisbig:

You can't tell me Dominique Barber is worse than Brandon Harrison, it was just Barber's inexperience that left him on the bench most of the season.

Barber is instinctive, Harrison is a plodder & both are in process of being developed just like Molden is............:specnatz:

Your point was that he didn't play, mine is that he did. I proved what, now?

Adibi didn't play because HE WAS HURT, don't you remember?

He wasn't hurt the whole season. He was healthy before Greenwood was injured.

wtf; like Steve Slaton or Joe Flacco..........:thisbig:

SS played because Chris Brown and Ahman Green went down. He took advantage of an opportunity.

Barber is instinctive, Harrison is a plodder & both are in process of being developed just like Molden is............

Harrison has been with the team for a while. The only reason he played, other than maybe he had incriminating evidence of someone, is because Barber was a rookie. Barber made more plays in one quarter against the Bears than Harrison made all season.

I think the point is when we selected Molden we knew the measureables on the guy but also that playing at Eastern Kentucky meant he more then likely was going to be a project player. From what I remember he looked fairly impressive in TC but the staff didn't feel comfortable playing him evidently. It makes me nervous that this staff is trying to hit the jackpot on small school guys. Jerome Mathis and Jacoby Jones. Meteoric start but seem to fade as quickly. At least the ysaw rookie PT Molden didn't.

I'm not necessarily against taking them but the problem seems to be this staff's ability to coach up some positions. Personally fwiw I'd rather take a big school guy that might not get the hype rather then high upside small school player. I do hope Molden pans out.

its obvious, you can't figure it out. I never said he did not play, I said he was mostly injured, which limited playing time.

yes he did, took the ball & ran with it. in the end suppose it didn't cross your mind SS could actually be the better RB? my bad, of course not coaches don't like to use rookies :spit:

yeah there you go again, "Harrison has been with the team for a while" Brilliant! guess you missed the news flash -http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=3326 if thats not enough he was a late arrival to camp, lost valueable conditioning time then hurt his hamstring & spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve so 08 was essentially his rookie year. I love it - your posts are just getting better & more insightful all the time :sarcasm:

its obvious, you can't figure it out. I never said he did not play, I said he was mostly injured, which limited playing time.

Then why post stats and not injury reports? You're not proving anything with stats other than he didn't play, just like Craig Nall didn't play.

Did I ever say he wasn't better? The point is, he wasn't expected to be a 1,000 yard back, was he? He was drafted as a situational guy who could develop. Anyone could tell you Slaton is the exception to rookies rather than the standard.

How long has he been with the team? Since 2007. Barber? 2008. Harrison went through two offseasons whereas Barber went through one. Harrison didn't play, but he was still on the team competing for a roster spot until September. He, along with a few of our other safeties got hurt and we had trade for Boulware.

I'd like to read more opinions of players and their performances in the East/West Shrine Game, that the Texans could potentially acquire.

I was unable to go to the game or even watch it on TV because I was working outside repairing my fence, so all I was able to do was listen to the radio broadcast.

Any analysis would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, I would like to say thanks for the pictures Gary. It looks like you had a good time meeting all of those players, coaches, and former players, and I love the football hat.

Thanks. The RB DJ number five had a couple of nice runs. That DE from Standford number 91 did not look all that impressive out there.
