Draft Sets Up Perfect for Texans!DEEP

I was just listening one of the draft website guys on John and Lance this morning and the more I look at this draft the more excited I get knowing that it sets up perfectly for our picks and needs. At 2-14 you can't be too picky on talent but I think this draft, with its depth falls perfectly for us.

1) Skill players v. O-line--I know this has been discussed ad naseum but IMHO you can take Bush and still get quality at O-line with our next 4 picks. We are running Denver's offense and our new O-coordinator said they built their lines on smaller, scrappier guys who loved to play every day. They had a 20th pick 1st rounder, two 4ths, a 7th and one FA rookie. They can find those guys without using a top 5 pick. They may even be able to find a FA or, hopefully teach our guys the system. It is fitting the person in. This is a deep draft for O-line and we have still get the skill and the line. I would also be for moving down for extra picks and getting the DE here.

2) LBs-Another deep postion, especially at ILB. The guys this morning were saying that a guy like Gerris Wilkinson from GT may be there for us to take with one of our 3rd round picks. I'd take that anyday. Bray from Oregon St is another one whom I think will translate on the next level

3) TE--Admittedly I knew about the Top 5 TEs but was not sure how the draft might fall. According to the guy this morning and another publication I read TEs might not start going until the 20th and lower in the 1st round. That, of course would be Vernon Davis, according to most. This guy said he may slip to 22. With that being said TE is also deep. A Joe Klopfenstein of Colorado may be there with the other 3rd. They said Tim Day from Oregon moved up in the East/West Shrine game and may be a good pickup later. If you have the extra pick from a trade down you could probably get Marcedes Lewis is he was the guy you thought fit.

All in all I think the Texans can fill many needs with the way the depth and our picks are set up.

Houston,

Did he mention where Pope, the TE from Georgia, would end up? I would love us to be able to grab him at 33 if we go Bush with number one and get some OL help via FA. Thanks.

yep .... as an SEC guy I've watched him more than a few times ... he's huge ...

I still really don't like taking a TE in the 2nd unless we trade down and have two 2nds, then I'd be open to it. I think OLine is way more important (also DE if we go Bush in the 1st) than TE, and there will be some good TEs left in the 3rd (Klopfenstein, David Thomas, Dominique Byrd has fallen in some mocks, T.J. Williams, Tim Day, etc.)

Mork, TJ Williams is really starting to grow on me. The more I see of the kid he looks really solid. He is strong enough to maintain blocks and fast enough to stretch the zone. He may be a nice 3rd or 4th round steal depending on his workouts.

I am hoping the team targets him in the 3rd or 4th as their guy at TE, we could hold off until the 4th and he could definitely slip that far, but I wouldn't have a problem grabbing him at #66 to make sure we get him. I think after he goes there will be a decent drop off in the quality of TEs. This is the highest round I see these guys going in:

1st rounders:
Vernon Davis
Leonard Pope
Marcedes Lewis

2nd rounders:
Dominique Byrd
Anthony Fasano

3rd rounders:
Joe Klopfenstein
T.J. Williams
Tim Day
David Thomas

One or more of the 3rd rounders (esp. Day, Thomas, and Williams) could easily slip to the #97 pick, but after them it is a decent drop off so we could take the best one at #66 to ensure we get one of these guys, and I think the team values finding a TE pretty high, maybe overvalues it a little IMO.

No but I assume he is towards the end of the 1st, the lowest being top of the 2nd. Many of the things I heard before I got to the office concerned our 3rd rounders and ILB and TEs there. He had mentioned Vernon Davis, with the way the draft is set up maybe hitting all the way down to 22. Day was brought up as maybe a guy who is opening eyes.

Consensus on Pope is late in the first round. #33's a slight fall for him, but certainly not out of the question. Many of those late first teams might well target Byrd or Klopf in the late 2nd and pass him by.

I have had a chance to see Joe Klop on local TV and from what I've seen, he would be a very nice pickup for us in the 3rd. Nice big target.
