Draft ramifications of offseason moves.

Ole Miss Texan

Hall of Fame
Welp...we've done a lot in FA to say the least...let's try and Recap a bit and how this effects our draft...err i mean the 1st round pick at 10..lol.

Offense:

Matt Schaub- QB, biggest offseason move by far...this changes our franchise.
Ahman Green- RB
Ron Dayne- RB (resigned)
Mark Bruener- TE (resigned)
Ephraim Salaam-OT (resigned)
Jordan Black- OT
Andre Johnson- WR (locked up our probowler for life..pretty much)

Defense:

Jeff Zgonina- DT
Shawn Barber- LB
Danny Clark- LB

So the way I see it...we've gone a LONG way on offense. we still need a #2 receiver and probably some more o-line help.

We havn't done much on defense. Secondary is easily our weakest link and biggest need (imo). CC Brown and Faggins aren't cutting it and I think 1 needs to be replaced for next season at the minimum.

For the draft, we can stay at 10 or trade down a few spots to try and pick up a draft pick either 2nd or 3rd this year or a 2nd next year. That imo would go a long way in making this Schaub deal look great. we can't move up period.

Draft: (1st round pick)
QB-out of the freakin question
RB-Peterson most likely gone, Lynch could be the pick at 10-20.
WR- I don't like anyone at 10...if we trade down look at Meachem, Jarrett, Ginn Jr?
TE- nope
FB-nope
OL- Levi Brown is the only guy i'd look at..10-20.

DE-Anderson/Adams most likely gone...Carriker could be an option..is 10 to high for US? i tend to think so..but the kids good
DT-Alan Branch or Amobi Okoye ..10-20
LB- Patrick Willis 10-20 (10 may be too high for our team)
SS-nope
FS-yes. Landry fo sho. Nelson-10-20 (landry probably gone)
CB-leon hall, darrelle revis, chris houston 10-20 (prefer trade down)

5 guys on offense (most likely all i'd rather have trading down- at 10 I'd take Levi, Lynch, then WR)
8 guys on defense (assuming anderson/adams/landry are gone. If staying at 10 I'd probably take Okoye or Hall , the others I would def. trade down for)

So I guess of those players somewhat available my board would look like this an take them as they came...hopefully w/ a trade down..

1. Amobi Okoye
2. Leon Hall
3. Regge Nelson
3. Levi Brown
4. Marshawn Lynch
5. Patrick Willis
6. Darelle Revis
7. Chris Houston
8. Robert Meachem
9. Alan Branch or Ted Ginn Jr.

*note-please disregard the numbers of my top ten. I completely forgot about Reggie Nelson...I'm not quite sure where I'd put him but he'd def. be my top 5. don't know why i skipped over him lol..

what do you guys think? what would your top 10 look like?

I think because of FA we're leaning more towards defense as our 1st pick. and we havnt touched the secondary which is scary. at the same time i see a very good arguement for levi or lynch to help out schaub and our offense.

Definitely go with secondary. Here's my top 10.

1. Reggie Nelson
2. Leon Hall
3. Amobi Okoye
4. Chris Houston
5. Darrelle Revis
6. Adam Carriker
7. Patrick Willis
8. Ted Ginn Jr.
9. Jamaal Anderson
10. Marshawn Lynch

i had no idea you signed zgonina. not that it matters, he's a role player at best, will see a few downs, but nothing else.

i think you have a few options with that #10 pick.

Levi Brown - he has to be #1 on your board at this point. i don't think he'll last till 10 though. i think atlanta takes him.
Reggie Nelson/LaRon Landry - depends who's the #1 safety on your board. my guess is nelson, but who knows...
Amobi Okoye - need some thickness in the middle there.
Leon Hall - top rated corner in the draft, good pick at #10.
Marshawn Lynch - can't underestimate this possibility at all. ahman green isn't going to be around forever, and even if he is, couldn't hurt to share the backfield with a great young talent.
Trade down - speaking of Lynch, Green Bay may be looking to move up and ensure they can get him before Buffalo gets their mitts on 'em.

pretty likely, i don't think landry is necessarily a top 8 guy, and they apparently like levi brown.

I dunno. I was thinking when we were at eight that it would be kind of a reach to take him but a small reach. I just wonder how bad the Falcons really believe their secondary is and how high on Landry they are,

Our secondary is the worst in the league imo...the only problem is we have a lot of other holes too...lol

i wouldnt touch an offensive lineman unless it was levi brown in the 1st...or if blalock, ugoh, or sears somehow drops to the 3rd...which is never gonna happen. why wouldnt i take an OL? because theyd just be another backup, which doesnt help us if theyre on the bench. we have a bunch of backups already.

i have a feeling we'll go with brown and get some DB's in the 3rd and 4th

Brown/Pitts/Weary/Winston/Spencer as our starting OLine

we could take david irons or josh wilson in the 3rd to replace faggins

4th round we could take michael johnson if he's there. he might not get past arizona, but im hoping we can trade carr to oakland for their 4th and take johnson with him.

we also need a monster DT in the middle that can clog the middle and take up blockers. maybe that will help travis johnson and mario williams. jacksonville and minny were top 5 run defenses that also run the 4-3. they both had a big DT over 315lbs.

here's hoping we trade carr to the raiders

1-brown OT
3-irons/wilson CB
4-johnson FS
4-soliai DT
5-robinson WR

So, what do people think are the odds both Landry AND Brown are off the board at 10? If both are, I think we would have to find a trade down partner and pick Nelson up around 16. I love the idea of trading down with Green Bay for their 2nd round pick...

1) Nelson FS
2) Craig Davis WR LSU
3) Hughes CB CAL
4) Kareem Brown DT Miami
5) OG

This year's lineup would be:

OL: Spencer/Black Pitts Flanagan/McKinney Weary/5th round pick Winston/Black
RB Green/Dayne/Taylor/Lundy
FB Leach?
WR Johnson Davis
QB Schaub Sage

LT would be the only remaining ? mark on Offense, which we could use the 1st round pick on in 08 when there are better rated OT in the 1st round anyway. 3rd round pick in 08 I would use on a Center.

Defense: Mario Maddux/TJ Brown/Weaver Weaver/Babin
LB Cook/Barber Ryans Greenwood
CB DRob Hughes Faggins
S Nelson Earl/CC Brown

09 I draft a RB/DE 1 and 2nd. Yes, that's 09. However, we could also be pretty darn competitve in 08 with a stud LT on board.

okay i'll jump in and do a quick mock...for offense that would pretty much complete our offense.

Trade- #10 overall to Green Bay for their 1st and 2nd round picks.

1. Levi Brown - LT
2. Ryan Kalil- C (won't be here at 16th in the 2nd but this is just for fun)
3. Aundrae Allison- WR

Completes our oline, good #2 receiver, we got our qb and rb's.

4th round pick up best cb or fs we can find
5th round opposite of 4th or dt

and so on...

I'd like to see a trade down to GB and then go for Hall or Griffin to be a real CB.
Find a FS later in the draft...small school Craig Dahl has all the tools to contribute immediately and could slip to the second day since there seems to be a nice supply of FS's running around out there.

Obviously, the third rounder should be a tackle...maybe Harris from ND.

I was leaning on the trade down for Revis, but now I am leaning on trading down for Ross at the 16 spot or so. I know some of the other CB's may be rated higher, I.E. Houston, who I think is a workout warrior, and I see Ross equal to Hall now, but with more upside later. Now I haven't seen any tape this is just my opinion, so don't rip too hard. I do believe that we go CB in the first, so I don't have to see another player burn Faggins for 2 long passes again.

I'd be cool with Ross as well..he's a good CB and can return kicks/punts. My big picture is getting our much-needed secondary help and then using the other picks to bolster what we got holes in now.

I think that Ross would make Dunta play so much better. If we were to get a trade so that we can get Ross, it would be awesome. I really think we need another player in the Schaub trade to make it even halfway fair, but that's JMO.

I still want a late round qb, none of our current qb's have proven jack. I also want to see a new young halfback (AP if posssible) and some work on the defense, specifically at S and CB.

I would LOVE to trade down, get another first-day pick and get Kalil, and go for secondary help in the third/with the other pick.

WE NEED OL!

here's an idea...that probably won't happen.

Everyone mentions NE has two 1st rd picks..and they equated to our 8th pick.. BUT NE wouldn't trade both. Since they have two real close...they might be willing to give one of them up. A fair trade would be NE gets our 10 overall. We get one of their 1sts and 2nd this year. and their 2nd rd next year. Points wise it works out but thats a lot of picks for them to give away...we'd at least have 'our' 2's back. They may want to trade up for Patrick Willis or Leon Hall-asanti wo'nt be there next year.

aint gonna happen but fun to pretend...

1- Ryan Kalil C
2- Anthony Gonzalez WR
3- Fred Bennett CB
