Draft Board Exercise

bah007

Hall of Fame
Here's the game. I'll post my current draft board for the Texans. I have the players listed by position and round. The board is based on who would be expected to be available at each of our picks, assuming that we end up with the #19 pick as we are currently projected.

RD 1 - Pick One
QB Connor Cook, Michigan St
WR Josh Doctson, TCU
OT Jason Spriggs, Indiana
DE Jonathan Allen, Alabama
NT Austin Johnson, Penn St
OLB Leonard Floyd, Georgia
ILB Jordan Jenkins, Georgia
CB Tre'Davious White, LSU

RD 2 - Pick One
QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota St
RB C.J. Prosise, Notre Dame
WR Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma
TE Jake Butt, Michigan
OT Kyle Murphy, Stanford
C Max Tuerk, USC
NT Sheldon Rankins, Louisville
ILB Kendell Beckwith, LSU
CB William Jackson, Houston
S Jeremy Cash, Duke

RD 3 - Pick One
RB Alex Collins, Arkansas
TE Jordan Leggett, Clemson
DE Anthony Zettel, Penn St
NT Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech
OLB Kemalei Correa, Boise St
ILB Tyler Matakevich, Temple
CB Cameron Sutton, Tennessee
S Karl Joseph, West Virginia

RD 4 - Pick One
RB Kareem Hunt, Toledo
WR Cooper Kupp, Eastern Washington
TE Bryce Williams, ECU
OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, TCU
OG Sebastian Tretola, Arkansas
DE Charles Tapper, Oklahoma
CB Erin Murray, Minnesota
S Desmond King, Iowa

RD 5 - Pick Two
WR Aaron Burbridge, Michigan St
OT Jordan Swindle, Kentucky
OG Joshua Garnett, Stanford
C Jack Allen, Michigan St
NT D.J. Reader, Clemson
OLB Kyler Fackrell, Utah St
ILB Blake Martinez, Stanford
S Miles Killebrew, Southern Utah

Make your own mock draft using only the players listed above. If you are not interested in the listed QBs you may also trade up for Lynch or Goff. To be realistic, if you do this you must also forfeit the 3rd round pick as part of the trade. Also realize that you are trading away next year's #1 as part of the deal as well.

I'm mostly just interested to see how many directions we can go, at what positions you guys see value, and what y'all think about the talent pool at each level of the draft. I've scouted a ton of players already this year (Texans giving me a lot of reasons to look ahead) and these are the guys that I really like in the area that we should expect to end up.

I'll start it off. I think Goff has clear franchise potential and I would trade all the way from #19 to about #6 to grab him. To do that would take our 1st and 3rd this year plus our 1st next year.

1. Jared Goff - QB, California
- I think he's the top QB in this class, and I think he's a future franchise QB. It would cost a lot to make this move up, but I think Goff would be worth it. We finally set this position up for the future. Goff probably needs to sit a year but he has every tool you need to be an elite NFL QB.

2. Kyle Murphy - OT, Stanford
- Solidifies the OL. Slides in at RT but also has LT potential down the road. Newton gets pushed down to compete at LG. This pick drastically improves our pass blocking and also gives us an extra body in the interior so that we can get our best five OL on the field.

4. Kareem Hunt - RB, Toledo
- Solves the RB issue. Hunt is a three down back with home run speed and pass catching ability. Today's NFL doesn't value RBs as much as it used to, and if you know what to look for, that means you can get a quality starter at the position deep in the draft. I think Hunt can be that guy.

5. D.J. Reader - NT, Clemson
- Replaces Wilfork as the two down run stuffer this team needs. Probably comes off the field in nickel situations but that's why he's available this late. With this pick you are essentially getting a two down starter in the 5th round.

5. Aaron Burbridge - WR, Michigan St
- Underrated athlete with great hands and runs great routes. Can operate out wide or down in the slot. I think our WR unit is already somewhat solid but we need to keep trying to find a guy that we can put opposite Hopkins as a legitimate threat.

Cook QB
Butte TE
Joseph S
Vaitai OG
Swindle OT

TE is a QBs best friend. Good thing both suck on our team.

I would do the trade for Goff also. But playing by your board,

1. Cook
2. Murphy
3. Matakevich
4. Hunt
5. Killebrew

First trading from 19 to 6 costs more than a third. My current board:

1 WR Docston
2. OT Kyle Murphy
3. RB Alex Collins (Ark)

4. King is a CB, probably gone if he comes out and I do not think he will; FS Jordan Lomax Iowa (12-0) same team as King

5a ILB Blake Martinez 120 Ts. 1 INT, 2 hurries, 5 PBU

5b none of your guys; C/OG Evan Boehm

1. QB Connor Cook, Michigan St
2. QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota St
3. DE Anthony Zettel, Penn St
4. OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, TCU
5. OG Joshua Garnett, Stanford

So are Kareem and Akeem brothers - or somehow related, or would that just be one giant (and potentially confusing) coincidence if both were to end up on the Texans roster next season?

Two 1sts and a 3rd.

I'm familiar with Lomax. I like King better. And I think he has a very good skill set to transition to FS. Good tackler, great in zone, and a ball hawk.

I would love that, but I don't think any of them make it to the 22nd pick of the round you show them in. Maybe Wentz.

I would do the trade for Goff as well and my mock would be:
1. Goff-QB
2. Murphy-OT
4. Hunt-RB
5. Reader-DT
5b. Kyler Fackrel-OLB provided his knee passes the health screening.

Without the Goff trade:
1. Jason Spriggs-OT
2. Carson Wentz-QB, best value pick on the board.
3. I'm not familiar with your 3rd round selections with the exception of Joseph and he's injured.
4. Kareem Hunt-RB
5. D.J. Reader-DT
5b. Kyler Fackrel-OLB

I think when it gets to draft time Wentz will be a first rd pick, I was just playing the game as instructed. I agree that it's doubtful that Cook will last until pick 22. My philosophy on the Texans QB problem is when you've a void as BIG as the Texans do at QB you double dip early in the draft. Much better chances of eliminating that void. It is very premature at this point and there is more info and data to be gained but my initial thoughts at this juncture would be Wentz in Rd 1 and Coker in Rd2.

You did correctly predict his rise in the draft stock so far from late round towards the bottom of the early rounds, so who am I to say he won't continue to move up? But there are an inordinate number of mid round QBs at this point. I can't think we would go into the draft that way.

Two years ago about this time I was saying Blake Bortles would be Rd 1 draft pick while most were expecting him to go back to school or a day 2 pick at best. It also appears as though I am the only one on the Jake Coker train for now. The one thing working against Wentz is his wrist injury that has kept him out of the spotlight. Senior Bowl is important to him so scouts can see how well he throws the ball after the injury to his throwing wrist.

Will do, but it'll be Senior Bowl before I start getting info on these guys.

And Senior Bowl is when Kiper's guy Wentz gets his first on the field comparables after the injury.

To play along or not to play along that is the question?

1. Goff is the pick, no 3rd this year & no 1st next. Taking Goff in your awfully favorable trade up scenario is a no brainer. Texans get their franchise QB.

2. Butt here, QB's best friend, lol, I mean a TE who can catch, run with the ball & block. Combo produces above average production next several years as both develop in the league.

3. Traded to get Goff.

4. Halapoulivaati Vaitai, ginormous swing tackle to develop who could wind up replacing in spots as a rookie, maybe a special player later, terrific upside & protect the QB.

5a Joshua Garnett, smart, tough Stanford guard to fortify the line even more.

5b. D.J. Reader, nose tackle for future. pretty decent prospect, would have taken one earlier if the board allowed the right prospect to be available......

Hoyer retires draft...

RD 1 - Pick One
QB Connor Cook, Michigan St

RD 2 - Pick One
QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota St

RD 3 - Pick One
RB Alex Collins, Arkansas

RD 4 - Pick One
S Desmond King, Iowa

RD 5 - Pick Two
WR Aaron Burbridge, Michigan St(no way he's this low, imo)
OG Joshua Garnett, Stanford

Not many coaching staffs can maximize a QB's value like O'Brien/Godsey. See which QB floats, and trade the other after 2 years or sub him in for injury. And injury and Texans QBs are like peas & carrots lately.

Get a SlotWR draft...

RD 1 - Pick One
QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota St

RD 2 - Pick One
WR Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma

RD 3 - Pick One
NT Vernon Butler, Louisiana Tech

RD 4 - Pick One
RB Kareem Hunt, Toledo

RD 5 - Pick Two
OG Joshua Garnett, Stanford
S Miles Killebrew, Southern Utah

1. QB Connor Cook, Michigan St
2. QB Carson Wentz, North Dakota St
3. DE Anthony Zettel, Penn St
4. OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, TCU
5. OG Joshua Garnett, Stanford

I like it.

But there's no way I'd let O'Brien manage that situation.

1. QB Connor Cook, Michigan St (personally I think this is a waste because I don't believe O'Brien will play a rookie QB)
2. C Max Tuerk, USC
3. RB Alex Collins, Arkansas
4. TE Bryce Williams, ECU
5. WR Aaron Burbridge, Michigan St (in the off chance O'Brien starts Cook I'm giving him someone he knows)

Not playing him would not constitute a waste. As long as he is developing him, making sure that when he steps on the field for the very first time, he is completely prepared for what he is about to see.

Besides with our history, he'll eventually see the field due to injury. Hopefully, OB will put him in when Hoyer is blowing out the competition.

:spit: I Crack myself up.
