Another day, another brew....I think the best decision the Texans can make defensively is to get rid of Crennel and play a 4-3 D. As such defensive players drafted will be used in a 4-3 scheme.
1. Jared Goff, QB, California, 6’4, 210lbs, 4.69
I think everyone has been screaming for the Texans to get a true franchise QB for years. This may be the year it is finally done. I have talked up Goff in the past, but the fact is he is really good. Good passer completion, good td:int rato, and lots of starts to show he is not a one year wonder. A couple of things will factor against him: size and offense. He is a slight 210lbs on that 6’4 frame. When he goes to the combine bigger guys like Cardele Jones (6’5 250lbs) and Christian Hackenberg (6’4 234lbs) will get a lot of positive press. Goff may slip because he is not a huge man. He has slipped a bit, but I think he has the most upside of all the QB prospects. I want to take a swing on a QB prospect. I’m tired of settling for scraps. I think the Texans end up with a top 5 pick and this is the guy I would take.
2. Germain Ifedi, OL, Texas A&M, 6’5, 320lbs, 5.33
The Texans OL is in shambles. There have been problems all over the place. From silly penalties, to poor run blocking, to anemic pass blocking, the Texans OL has struggled all year. Time for an infusion of talent. Ifedi can play at OG or OT. Putting him at OG would allow Newton to play his natural RT and allow for a powerful, nasty, tough OL. When you draft QB, you gotta find ways to protect him.
3. Kenyan Drake, RB, Alabama, 6’1, 211lbs, 4.54
It would be awful nice to be able to run the ball with some effectiveness. Without Foster, the Texans have virtually no running game. The running game pretty much disappears without him. Drafting a good running back like Drake will help in that regard. Drake can carry the football and help propel the new Texans identity.
4. Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma, 5’10, 195lbs, 4.42
Playmaker. When he gets the ball he can accelerate down the field. A true burner. In 2014, he has 50 catches for 957 yards with five touchdowns. He had 51 catches for 603 yards and seven tds in 2013 and 45 catches for 621 yards and three touchdowns in 2012.That works out to 19.14, 11.82, and 13.8 yards per reception. He would certainly be a helpful addition to the offense.
5. Kodi Whitfield, S, Stanford, 6’2, 204lbs, 4.68
A former WR who has transitioned to safety. Would be a really good FS prospect. Has been a solid tackler thus far. As a WR he is used to route running and can determine where a WR may be. In addition he has great hands and would be able to fight for all the jump balls. Also can help a lot on special teams.
6. Ejiro Ederaine, OLB, Fresno State, 6’3, 221lbs, 4.71
Remember, I have the team moving towards a 4-3, so EE would be able to complete for the Will LB spot. With Cush as a Sam and McKinney as a more natural Mike, EE could compete for the Will spot with others on the team. Would also help on the special teams.
7. Tyrone Swoopes, Texas, 6’4 250lbs, 4.70
Before everyone gets up in arms, I am not drafting Swoopes to be a QB. I am drafting him for a specific role. One of the biggest issues, the Texans have is short yardage situations. Charlie Strong has used Swoopes in short yardage situations all year in Texas and he has been solid. I would stop kicking extra point attempts and use Swoopes after every touchdown. I would use Swoopes as the third and short or 4th and 1 option. His size and power will pretty much mean he is getting a couple of yards. The Texans have absolutely nothing like him on the team and he would bring a very different dynamic. Also could be a dynamo on special teams.
