Doppelgelganger1's December Mock

There is a lot to like with the offense. There is a lot to not like with the Defense. I think a switch to a 3-4 would be one way to address the major concerns on this team. In FA, we 3-4 DE Shaun Ellis. The Jets have too many players to sign and we could get him.

We have a ton of holes on D, so instead of trying to address all, I decided to look at one part and make it as good as possible. I have the Texans picking around 15 each level.

1. Von Miller: Texas A&M, 3-4 OLB, our Elvis Dumervill, would play opposite Barwin/Cush and provide relentless pass rushing and good enough coverage.

2. Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss, new NT. He is a classic occupy multiple blockers NT who could free up our DE and OLB to make plays.

3. Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado. A big, tall, fast CB who could play man. He is tall so tall receivers would not easily be able to outjump him and he has enough speed to keep up.

4. Jeron Johnson, SS, Boise State. Pollard is a hit machine. We need someone who can cover, hit, and tackle. JJ is far better to Pollard in 2 of those 3 areas and thats what we need.

5. Mario Harvey. The other Mario. If we slide to a 3-4, who will play beside Meco? Mario can. He can be the Takeo Spikes to Meco's Patrick Willis.

6. Anthony Gray, NT, Southern Miss, another NT. He can backup Powe or even come in on double NT D sets. I have seen the Ravens or even the Steelers use double NT sets on some plays. Another NT would give the DE's a rest and give offenses another wrinkle to think about

7. Derrell Smith, DE/OLB, Syracuse, another rusher to come in and put pressure on the opposing QB. In the NFL, there are very few successful teams who can play pass defense without constant pressure. Bring in another OLB and now you have at least 4 OLB (along with Ellis and Mario at DE) who can bring some pressure.

This is what the team would look like.

........Williams............Powe..............Ellis

...Von Miller/Smith.....Harvey.....Ryans.......Barwin/Cush

........Jackson.......Johnson.......Nolan......Smith

In this lineup you can bring Cush up next to Williams or Ellis in some packages and have him rush or drop into coverage ala Elephant style.

That would be a great draft if we were going to the 3-4. Maybe we will. I wouldnt mind seeing a punter in here. And maaaaaybe a WR. But other than that, I like it.

Thanks. I thought about another WR, but I thought if the Defense can be rehauled into a 3-4 and we can move from say 32 in Defense to 20, with our offense we could be a playoff squad.

Aren't we all really a doppelganger? Either of another person or of our offline person?

Thanks for answering despite my bad typing, but yeah try to replicate my so-called "real" personality as much as possible on the board.

Enjoy the board and good luck with following the NFL draft.

You bet. I love the NFL draft and mocks becuase its the one time as a fan you can have some feeling of control over your team. Many times we as a fan base complain about various picks. The Mocks allow us fans to put up or shut up! Instead of being critical we can show who we WOULD have drafted and then talk trash about the organization for not agreeing with our pick.

My favorite is when I had the Texans taking a rising CB from Pitt or a uber LB from Missisippi rather than a young DT from Louisville. Many people ragged on me and tole me how I was wasting the pick by over-drafting the CB or taking the uber LB. I reasoned you can never have enough good CBs and this uber LB can play Mike and Meco can play OLB and we would have two outstanding LBs. Maybe we could even go 3-4 and have both play in the middle. Alas, I was laughed at and told I "didn't get it" by the fans as they slurped the FO Koolaid. I wanted the DT to live up to his position, but I didn't think he would. That DT was Amobi Okoye.

The uber LB was this guy:

The rising CB was this guy:

Do you think Revis would have succeeded here? I honestly dont think he would have been very good.

I really think he would have succeeded in Htown. He may not have become Revis Island, but he still would have been very good. At the time we had DR, Bennet, and had signed Jaques Reeves. We could have eased Revis in as a nickel opposite Bennet/Reeves and DR. As time went along he could have become a very good CB and would have started opposite DR. If DR had indeed gotten hurt just as he had, we would still have Reeves and Bennet opposite Revis. With Revis in tow we could have let DR walk and still have a very good CB on the team. We still could have drafted Jackson, but we would have started Glover over him and let Jackson develop as the Nickle. Then as time went along we would have a solid Jackson and very good Revis patrolling.

I very much believe Revis would have been a very good corner here in Htown.

So you wanted Revis, and Willis. Who do you want for the Texans in 2011?

It depends on a lot of factors such as if we go to a 3-4 or stay with a 4-3.
Also tbh I have not made up my mind yet, its only December, and the senior practices, combine, and individual practices have not occured.

However, at the moment, I like Von Miller from Texas A&M. He reminds me a lot of Denver's Elvis Dumervill: a high energy somewhat undersized LB that just causes chaos. I think he would look great as an OLB on a Texans 3-4.

I totally agree. He isnt huge, but just gets the job done all over the field. In the right scheme he will be very good.

What if we stay 4-3?

I am tempted to take Von Miller even in a 4-3. When Denver ran a 4-3, Dumervill was a beast at DE and was their best attacker.

Outside of Miller, I like Ryan Kerrigan DE for Purdue. I am also intrigued by Pitt WR Jonathan Baldwin. Imagine having him as the #2 WR opposite AJ. THATS scary!

I am also interested in LB Travis Lewis. Having a LB corp of Meco, Cush, and Lewis would be terrifying. The other plus if if we ever want to line up Cush in an elephant package and put him near the line, Lewis could cover space.

I love those first two picks. But with the 3 or 4 we should look to FS, unless we pick up a dynamic FA. I just don't see a switch to the 3/4 in 2011, not enough time and players, especially with the impending lockout.

Yeah, I hear you. Sometimes you need to shake things up and quite frankly maybe it is not the right time to go to a 3-4. It is very possible we could pick up a 4-3 D coordinator like John Fox who may be on his last legs in Carolina, but this is a copycat monkey see monkey do league. Teams are turning towards the 3-4 now, not towards the 4-3.

I know a lot of people want to see a legit FS, but I really think this is not the year for FS in general. The crop there is fairly weak imo. I think Nolan can be a very solid FS if taught properly and given time. The real weakness we have is SS in Pollard. As a SS, you want a guy who can wrap up tackles, play decent coverage, and deliver solid bone jarring hits. Pollard is only good at 1/3 of those and at times, those bone jarring hits tacks on an extra 15 yards. We need a guy to help our CBs by having some coverage skills and tackling ability. JJ is that guy. The nice thing about Jali Brown is he is a big, quick, CB. FS is in some ways essentially a big quick, CB with good hands, good coverage skills, and can tackle. He may project decently towards FS.

If we were to switch to a 3-4 system then I like this draft alot with the exception of Smith in the 3rd. I'd rather have a FS in the 3rd.

Meh, Von Miller does nothing for me, in either the 3-4 or the 4-3. Just dont get a good feeling when I watch him play, its hard to explain.

Love Kerrigan, excellent 4-3 DE. My pick in my last mock, and in the mock I am working on I am considering him as well. Baldwin is interesting, but I dont think it will happen with the current coaching staff.

Travis Lewis is money. If we were picking later, he would be my pick. Alas, the Texans are probably picking in the 10-15 range, which right now at least, is too early.

my question would be, how do we mock a Texans draft not knowing who the defensive coordinator or even the Head Coach will be?

Instead of Mock Drafts shouldn't we be focusing on collecting the best big board which reflects accurate bpa available in upcoming 2011 draft

You are right. But, it is more fun to be like Mel Kiper Jr, put together about a thousand different mocks, and then publicly pat yourself on the back onh draft day when you managed to get a few picks right! :)
