DL coach hired

Wolf

100% Texan
KRIV-TV also reported on Friday night's telecast that the Texans have hired Mike London as the team's defensive line coach. London, 44, held the same job at the University of Virginia, one of the few college programs that utilizes the 3-4 defensive scheme also employed by the Texans.

London replaces departed coach Todd Grantham, who left to assume defensive coordinator responsibilities with the Browns last month. London takes over a veteran line with the Texans, one that was fortified by the return of Seth Payne earlier this week.

more on London

Former University of Richmond standout Mike London is in his fourth season as Virginia’s defensive line coach. He assumed additional duties as UVa’s recruiting coordinator and summer camp director in February of 2002.

During the past two seasons, London has helped defensive end Chris Canty—a 2004 preseason All-America and Lombardi Award candidate—develop into one of the ACC’s premier defensive ends. As a junior in 2003, Canty led the league’s defensive linemen in tackling for the second year in a row. He became UVa’s first defensive lineman to earn first- or second-team All-Conference honors in consecutive seasons since Todd White in 1995-96.

Under London, a Virginia player has finished first in tackling among ACC defensive linemen for each of the past three seasons.

In 2002, London began the season with a group of players of whom only one had significant previous game experience. Two freshmen started at defensive end, with one of them—Brennan Schmidt—setting the school record for tackles (87) by a freshman lineman.

As UVa’s recruiting coordinator, London helped the Cavaliers land their third consecutive nationally-ranked recruiting class in 2004.

Fresh, new blood that has been successful in his given expertise. Hmmmm, could work out very well for those old dogs on the D-line. :hmmm:

I wouldnt be surprised to see him make a push to get Canty in here. Im sure he is close with him.

Now, if we could only get a similar upgrade to the O-line coaching staff we might be in good shape. We had to obviously replace the D-line coach, but I wish the same could be said for the O-line coaching. It will be interesting to see how this gentleman adapts to the Pros. Sounds like he might be a real upgrade to our coaching staff. We won't know till we see him in action, but his resume is certainly incouraging.

Looking at Pendry's resume, there is a gap between 2001 and 2003. Time off for family considerations or unable to find suitable position? How would you compare Pendry's offensive philosophy with Palmer's.
