Derrick Johnson

'No player has garnered more attention at Chiefs camp than Johnson, who likely will be in Kansas City's starting lineup for Friday night's preseason opener against Minnesota and will be in the starting lineup for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener.

Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said he could have waited to move Johnson into the starting lineup, let the rookie pay his dues, but really, who would he have been fooling? Johnson is ready now.

He has looked so good that Vermeil, who has been at this a long time, already is proclaiming Johnson the most talented linebacker he has been on a field with. Ever.

And it's not hard to see why. At 6-foot-3, 248 pounds, Johnson might be the fastest player on the entire Chiefs team -- faster than wide receivers Eddie Kennison and Dante Hall, faster than cornerbacks Patrick Surtain and Eric Warfield.

A linebacker.

And a player teams are going to regret not taking.'

Say what you want about DJ not bein able to find a place in the 3-4, but I'm seriously starting to doubt it. I think he would probably play any linebacker positon in any scheme and do well at it.

I agree. Some players can play in any D. Besides, 6 3 and 248 isnt very small. Even in a 3-4.

Bigger than Sharper, roughly the same size as Wong I think, maybe a little taller and a couple lbs lighter. Hopefully TJ will become an equally (or more, if DJ tanks) successful player.

Wow. Vermeil sure has changed his tune since he lost out on the Thomas Davis Sweepstakes. The Chiefs, Panthers, and Saints all had a college safety ranked as the #1 linebacker on their board.

I was really hoping the Patriots would try to move up in the draft to snag this guy, especially with Bruschi (and now Ted Johnson) not around. I think he'll be this year's Vilma.

Trying not to think about it. I knew we should have picked DJ at the time. Having heared so little about Travis I have no idea if we made the right choice. I just know that Mathis could turn out to be a real playmaker for us eventually so the draft was not a total loss.

Can the NFL go 3 days without locking their lips to DJ ***? Thats the 75th report on DJ in training camp already. Give it a rest.

Yes, DJ is the "sexy" pick. But so was Sean Taylor. And we know how he turned out. Im not saying DJ is a bad seed like him, but sometimes you, and I mean the fans, miss out on a player, and it turns out to be a good thing.

How many people wanted Deangelo Hall over Dunta? I know I did. I didnt know much about Dunta, and he wasnt the most atractive pick.

Same thing this year. We know TONS more about DJ than TJ, but that doesnt make it a better pick.

You are right DC, and not only that but Vermeil saying he is the most talented linebacker he has ever seen on the field and with every one on DJ's jock, has anyone seen him play 1 down in a real NFL game yet? Not only that, but with the age of Payne and Walker and their injury problems last season, I feel a whole lot better having picked TJ. Our LB situation was much better than the D line situation before the draft.

But Derrick Johnson would have automatically given us a top 3 defense and a guaranteed playoff birth!! Passing on DJ in the draft makes this entire offseason a complete failure no matter how we do in the regular season. :heh:

I thought that taking some time off from these boards would sooth my emotions on us not taking DJ....they havn't. In fact the more I keep watching reports on this guy through camp the more I keep getting madder at the Texans front office for not taking him.

How could the Texans and 14 other teams pass up a chance to take someone who is faster than a speeding bullet, leaps tall buildings with single bound, is stronger than a locomotive, and has a bunch of Teasips licking his cape?

Casserly and his staff don't know a cotton-pickin thing. . . . .but us GM wannabe message board posters know it all . . . right? :dontknowa

Has it dawned on anyone of you that Vermeil might be saying those things publicly to light a fire in Johnson because he's really NOT impressed so far with what he's seen so far in camp? :hmmm:

Derrick Johnson: Sons of Texas! I am Derrick Johnson.

Second Texan: Derrick Johnson is seven feet tall!

Derrick Johnson: Yes, I've heard. Tackles running backs by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he'd consume the Indianapolis Colts with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.

I dont think this is the case. There are a few more reporters, columnists, that say he is looking good in camp. But thats just the thing. This is camp. Ill wait until 1/2 way thru the season to see how things stacked up, and before I call him the most talented linebacker. Unbelievable what comes out of this guys mouth.

Haha! I was waiting for this! Good work man. Good laugh.

I think Vemiel knows enough to be able to gauge his talent level.

There are so many reports on him because of his high profile drop, and because he was supposed to be a can't miss prospect, that appearantly, was missed.

How many times do you here "Player X is having his best training camp since he's been here. We expect great things from him!"? Doesn't mean anything other than public support for a guy or a reporter impressed with some aspect of that players game (ie speed). I've seen those comments on players that fail to make any NFL squad much less an impact on a playoff team.

I'll say it again. I was shocked when we traded down when DJ was on the board still. I have been impressed with all 4 of our 1st round picks so far and think most of us have. I like the energy and charisma that TJ has shown so far and hope he can be a great player for us. I'll reserve judgment on the DJ/TJ debate until they play some regular season games. Any other judgement is based on pure speculation.

I never said we'd regret it, I just know some teams will. Vermiel is a good coach, I think he'd know talent when he sees it. Not saying hes gonna be a hall of famer, but saying that.. hes got the talent to be. It's just too bad he's in a sloppy defensive scheme, that will prevent him makin plays, but hopefully it wasen't just their personel.

If that was the case then what about Aaron Rogers? Up until a few days before the draft, no one knew if it was gonna be Alex Smith or Rogers. And when Smith went first, no one predicted Rogers to drop that far. I think his drop was greater than of Johnson's. And there haven't been too many reports on Roger's. So it's safe to say all the DJ reports are legit. This guy is "Superman" and we let him slip through our fingers... :brickwall

Rogers and Smith would of never been thought of to be a 1st overall pick, but there was a need. There was also noone worth the top overall pick. Rogers wasen't even in the mentioning till Leinhart decided to return to USC. Rogers ended up where he was probably worth. I still don't think Smith was worth first overall, but sometimes when a team needs a QB that badly and has the 1st overall pick you just have to take whos best.
