Defense vs Offense

As we get closer to the draft, I'm constantly torn on who we should pick. I don't know why I'm so anxious, because I have ZIP to say about our selection. Still as a fan from back in the Oilers day, I can't help it.

As I look at the top defensive players that we could take #1 or in a trade back (stay Top 10 for arguments sake) these are the guys I like...

DEFENSE
- J. Clowney: Once in a decade prospect or fool's gold?
- K. Mack: Dominant menace or versatile/skilled LB?
- Dee Ford: Flash meets 3/4 OLB or 3rd down pass rusher?
- A. Donald: Defense sparkplug or disappearing Mighty Mouse?

OFFENSE
- J. Manziel: Favre/Tarkenton combo hot rod or little JF goes Hollywood?
- Sammy Watkins: Faster Jerry Rice or a solid #1 WR?
- Greg Robinson: Pro-bowl LT or solid starter?
- Mike Evans: Megatron II or solid #1 WR?
- Jake Matthews: Pro-bowl OT or solid RT starter?

As a fan I look for several things in a #1 pick. First, are they an impact player and can they be an immediate starter. Second, is this the best player on my board when I'm making my selection (not reaching for need). Third, if I pass on this player will I regret it?

I'll start by saying that I love Watkins and Evans. I believe both will become elite WRs and if we were in the market to replace AJ, this would be a great year to do it. Not a high priority from a need perspective, but they certainly both can be impact players.

When the Oilers were great there OL was dominant. HOFers playing together doesn't happen very often, but those guys made me appreciate great O-line play. Robinson would be a luxury, but Matthews would be a perfect RT with potential to move over to LT one day. He would be a great target should that trade with the Bills have any legs.

Johnny Manziel is a hard one to shake. I've never been an Aggie fan (UofH and UTSA grad), but I was compelled to watch A&M to see Johnny. Man can he put on a show. He has Favre's guts, the gunslinger's attitude and the never quit mentality that I admire in a QB. However, he's also small and reckless with the ball and his body at times. I also believe he's got a touch of Broadway Joe in him and that's what some folks are having a hard time grappling with.

Clowney's hype is almost overwhelming. I mean his name is mentioned with Lawrence Taylor, Peppers, etc. If he's the next LT, sign me up, no questions asked. However, I'm not sure he's that guy. Does he have the fire in his belly that made the Great Ones, great? I don't know, he doesn't appear to have that JJ Watt drive. Could JJ help him catch fire? Maybe, your environment definitely can impact your attitude and performance. In RC's defense he would almost have to be an OLB...can he make that kind of transition? Does he want to? There are almost TOO MANY questions with Clowney--they make my head hurt.

Mack seems solid and would be a great OLB that could do it all. An easier transition than Clowney and thus a better fit perhaps. Think what Vrabel could do with Mack or Dee Ford for that matter. Both could attack from different angles and give us a true playmaker outside. I could live we either pick and I do think Ford moves up into the 6-15 range.

Aaron Donald is one of those DL fans love to dismiss. He's short (6'0") and about 285, not a great fit on an RC 3/4 line. But this kid is disruptive and has a fierce desire to be the best. He's small, but you find a place to play this kind of talent if your lucky enough to get him.

I know that the Bridgewater and Bortles fans will wonder we're they are in my analysis. Sorry, but I wouldn't draft either with a Top 10 pick. Again, my opinion, I could be dead wrong an McClain may call the Bortles pick.

With that as background and remembering why we didn't take Vince Young or Reggie Bush, I pray we go OFFENSE this time and take Manziel or trade-back. We need a QB, a spark, a leader, a difference-maker...we need Johnny Manziel. It may not be pretty the first year, as I was reminded watching some old Steve Young footage last week, but if this kid is as driven and determined as he seems to be, then Houston we can build a winner! With JM at the helm, we bring a little Texan into the Texans who like dynamite may be a small package, but can deliver a big bang for our bucks. Hell JM will also make McNair richer with merchandise sales and get our beloved team on Sports Center on a regular basis. While that may seem trivial to some, that extra income may bring in the kind of revenue that allows us to attract the right FAs next year and ensure we keep the ones we want (JJ + some).

Now, if we trade back, which I'd also support wholeheartedly, then I'd take any of the players I mentioned above w/o much hesitation. That may be our best course of action , but passing up JF may also come back to haunt us.

I'm with you on nearly all of this.

Of these players, I don't see any way that Dee Ford, A. Donald, Mike Evan, or Jake Matthews go #1. I don't want Manziel.

I'm personally in the Watkins camp with Greg Robinson being my solid #2. Those are the two guys who are the most sure to perform up to the 1-1 slot.

You left off Bortles and Bridgewater and those are the two most likely guys, imo. I don't particularly like those picks or Clowney or Mack, but those are picks that I wouldn't be too upset if we made.

Whichever direction we go, I just hope the FO makes the right call.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting all of these folks as potential 1-1 picks, but rather as going somewhere in the TOP 10. With guys like Locker, Ponder and Gabbert going in the TOP 10 in the last few years, you're probably right. Personally I could Derek Carr slipping in there and TB slipping out.

defensively more stacked @ the top, so I would choose one then go offensively heavy because of depth @ WR along with quality QB's, RB's & TE's. would love to trade down & select Mack to play OLB. use extra picks/draft to retool roster.

Yep

Give me Clowney 1-1. Although I like Robinson a lot.

2.Garappolo

3.Bitonio

4.JaylenWatkins

4.Zumwalt

5.Beau Allen

6. Patchan

I'm a very happy camper. The defense will have much more speed that's sorely lacking.

My very short personal opinion of the players you listed. JMO, don't kill the messenger.

Clowney, another Mario Williams who will flash from time to time but not worth it in the long run.
Mack, versatile skilled LB who will flash awsomeness from time to time.
Ford, 3rd down pass rush specialist, not worth a 1st round pick. He'll be decent/good but never great.
Donald, 4-3 D-lineman that will get owned by skilled NFL O-linemen, wouldn't touch him.

Manziel, combo of Favre/Tarkenton and JF Hollywood, he'll flash greatness from time to time but he's not a top 5 QB at anytime in his career.
Watkins, solid #1 WR and easy #1 pick if we needed a WR.
Robinson, Pro Bowl LT and easy #1 pick if we needed a LT.
Evans, solid #2 WR, lacks the speed and quickness to be a #1. I'd pass.
Matthews, Pro Bowl RT and/or good/average LT.

I heard it said earlier today that O'Brien wants a QB to become a superstar, not a superstar to become a QB. That leaves Manziel on the outside looking in, and playing for someone else. I like Bridegwater at #1 and could support Bortles if we traded down a little and if he could sit for a year. I also hope that we get the pick right, but I realize that I have no control over the matter and will have to hope for the best and just enjoy watching whoever is chosen in the 1st. Just try to enjoy the game of football and not get so up tight about things you can't control. This last season was probably the most relaxing season of football I've ever enjoyed. Once we started losing and playing like crap, I hated it but I realized there was nothing I could do about it, and it wasn't my money on the line out there. So try to relax and enjoy the game.

Will there be days that you regret our #1 pick, sure. Some days our guy will just have a bad day and the other early 1st round picks will play brilliantly so there will be some short term regret from time to time. They're all just prospects and no one has a crystal ball to see the future, do your homework, make your pick, coach the hell out of him, and hope for the best.

Mack intrigues me. Is he a Robert Brazille type talent or does he turn into the next Aaron Curry? I want to believe the former and would be excited if we trade down and get him.

I've liked Jimmy G for sometime and had been a proponent of your top 2 picks early on. I truly like your line up all the way down.

Your opinion is as good as any one's. I'll respectfully disagree on several points, especially Evans, but understand your attraction to TB and Bortles. I got excited looking at TB's highlights, but was turned off by him blowing off the combine and gaining fake weight. I'd be OK with him in 2nd round, but not 1-1. Bortles may be a diamond in the rough, and OB could turn him into a great QB with his tools, but I didn't particularly like how he played. Needless to say I'm not a scout and haven't spent hours on either, so my view is probably flawed. I agree with the rest of what you said, you do the best you can and with humans there are always factors you can't control.

I'm one of those guys that can spin just about anything positively. This time around, I really have no preference for who the Texans should take. When people ask me who I want them to take, I just say it really doesn't matter to me. Anyone who goes in the top 10 is going to help this team.

This is an excellent point of view that I wish more people had.

If it's your opinion, you're more than just the messenger. :kitten:
