Defense Announced

So the defense is basically set, the only competiton is for the strong saftey spot. But Earl seems to have the fast track. As we suspected Peek gets his shot on the outside and Wong moves inside. I think our defensive line is improved with Travis Johnson. I feel our linebackers are much improved, i always felt Wong was better inside where he played in Minnesota. Peek can get to the QB and will probably be the first Texan with double digit sacks. Overall i think our starting linebackers are better than last year, just dont have as much depth. In the defensive backfield we got younger so more a move for 2 years from now rather than right now, which falls in line with the 5 year plan.

Who is Earls compition for the SS spot? I though he would get the starting spot after he beat out Brown last year.

Probably the rookie we drafted this year, and Jason Simmons.

That rookie will be lucky to make the team, much less challenge Earl for a starting spot.

Funny, according to NFL.com both Simmons and Earl started a lot of the same games last year. Just goes to show even some of the most reliable sources make mistakes.

So TJ isnt even projected to be a starter? "Nice Pick Campers!" :thumbdown

That is a good situation to have--not having to throw rookies into the mix immediately due to overwhelming need. Instead let them learn the system, gel with their teammates, participate in off-season programs, etc.

I agree thats its nice for once that we dont HAVE to start a rookie. If this guy is smart, he will LIVE in the weight room this season.

isnt it better that way, now our team isnt in desperate need of players to come in immediatly and start, we are not throwing anyone in under of the preverbial bus... it was already stated before the draft that most likely who ever we picked would not be an immediate started, stated by Dom

Simmons played FS for us last season didnt he?

From my recollection Simmons played games for us at both SS and FS. Not sure of how many games he started at either position.

it really doesn't matter who is the projected starter at this point in time. Things can change completely by the time the season starts.

I like the pick of TJ I think its a Pick that has been long overdue. In fact I was ecstatic they actually picked a player at the position I felt was our biggest need.

1. Walker has only ½ sack the last 2 years. His motor runs good but not over a whole game.

2. The drop off of talent from starter to back up was enormous last season.

3. TJ can play both NT and DE in the 3-4 definite plus

4. TJ provides us with a great situation, we can rotate our lineman so that they are all still fresh in the 4th quarter.

Is TJ a NT or DE or are they gonna try him at both spots. I'm gonna love seeing us in the nickle and turning our dogs loose. From the film I've seen on TJ I think he'll give a great up field push in passing situations. Then with Babin and Peek on the outside, this should give us the pressure we've been looking for.

R Walker is a SS isn't he. He is recovering from the same type injury that E Glen had. If there is any competition for SS I would think that it would be them. JMO :listening

remember guys we still have Tim Cheatwood to try and rush the passer too, lets not forget a month ago everyone was projecting him as a starter, but seriously he could maybe spell babin or peek if either can't get to the qb.

I doubt anybody but Travis himself really wants him starting at the beginning of the season. Let's wait until the likely injury of either Walker or Payne occurs, and he can have some learning time in the rotation until then.

My hope is he will get equal time at both. and i noticed the push he had on film, if he can occupy 2 lineman then our outside guy can get to the QB practically unblocked.

I wanna see some freaked out QB eyes this year as they see a texan colored blur running at them.

The last 3 years have seen freaked out QB's when we got a hurry on them, much less a sack!! LOL I'll settle for hurries and knockdowns this year. Sacks are great, but pressure is the important thing. QB's are running MINUTES off the clock on passing plays.HAHA. I'm content with baby steps because we've barely crawled in pass rushing so far. We have good schemes and blitzes, now, maybe, we have the personnel to put them to good use.

i think simmons can play all the secondary spots and i believe he comes in during nickel or dime packages and earl goes out. don't chastise me if i'm wrong. also don't forget about ramon walker. he played monster on special teams against new england in 2003, blocking a punt and field goal i believe. it should be a great battle between the 3 for the strong safety spot. when i look at the roster all i'm seeing is more and more sompetition. we have 16 LB's on our roster now, i'd say the 4 starters are the only sure bets there. it'll be funny if c.c. brown makes the roster. he has the same number as eric brown, might confuse alot of people.
