Deep RB Draft

buddyboy

Rookie
It seems to me that there is a pretty deep class of RBs this year, and should the Texans decide to go RB at #18 or even trade down for extra picks, it looks like a quality back will be available.

However, after McFadden, it looks like there's a question mark at who would be the second or even third back selected. 2 backs that stood out to me were Jonathan Stewart or Rashard Mendenhall, either of which might fall to us (at this point in the draft boards).

So this brings me to my question, which back would you rather have? Mendenhall or Stewart? I saw the Oregon game and I was pretty impressed with Stewart. He runs tough, yet also has the game breaking speed that the Dayne Train lacks.

So, which would you prefer? Or would it be another back?

I like Stewart, gives you a power back & homerun threat, but most have Mendenhall rated higher becuase of his speed & quickness. either one would be fine selections, can't really go wrong with either one @ #18 that is if rated higher than any tackle or cb available which would overrule taking RB.

I agree. They both look great.

It just depends on which type of back you are looking for.

Remember that we are in the west coast offense to so they have to be able to catch so i will give the edge too Johnathon Stewart but Mendenhall reminds me of a young Terrell Davis.:pirate: :fans:

I don't think we will draft a running back till the third round. This draft is very deep at RB and we still have a lot of needs

Yeah, you can get excellent talent in later rounds this year. Some really good RB will fall into the 4th-7th round. The drop off from the 1st rounders and the later picks isnt very drastic.

seems we have adopted the Denver mentality hook line & sinker-

"We don't need a 1st round running back to have teams respect us, they already do. Every team knows that Denver can run the ball regardless of the runner."

Well Beerlover , I'll give ya Stewart....But.....

If someone. say Seattle, comes banging on the Texan door for the eighteen with Stewart still there and offering picks for a move down, they have got to think about it.

This may be the best option available but do you really think that will happen for a running back. Unless McFadden, Felix Jones, and Mendenhall are off the board, there really isn't much of an incentive. Even guys like Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles, and Steve Slaton could be had if these top 4(Stewert, McFadden, Jones, Mendenhall) are off the board.

Can't say I have made any sort of indepth study, but with the limited looks I have had at the guys, Stewart looks like the guy that would best fit our offense. Big guy, good speed, some wiggle, cuts hard, seems decisive and can catch. Not sure about how well he picks up the blitz.

I am not a fan of drafting a RB in the first round, preferrably second but we do not ave a second round pick, I just think that and the bottow of the first and early mid second is the best place to chose a RB. The needs of the team out weigh the cost of drafting a RB that high.

I understand your position & I'm in total agreement with one exception- you should never pass on the bpa regardless if you prefer or value other positions more of less. if a RB is the bpa when the Texans are on the clock & another team does not call & offer what you feel is greater value to trade down you build your franchise with the best player available.

I agree with this but you've also got to rate the positions, and if you see that there are still 6 or 7 other running backs that can be your #2 or even a starter, I think that has got to affect your decision making. I'm not sure Mendenhall or Stewart would be the BPA at #18.

look, how many times, how many different ways do I say it, bpa is bpa. each team probably has a slightly different draft board therefore bpa is subjective to each team & their needs. my statement is clear you take the bpa on your draft board period. who knows for sure which player will be available or still on the board & how the Texans board rates out come selection time?

I would feel a whole lot better about the RB class depth if the Texans had a 2nd rd. pick. I can't recall how many times I've stated that cause the two backs I would target are both gonna be 2nd rd. picks. (Chris Johnson, East Carolina & James Davis, Clemson). The issue is- Texans don't have a 2nd rd. pick, so right now the bpa @ #18 could be Mendenhall or Stewart.

I'm not sure if Mendenhall goes that high regardless, so I'm not sure how he could be BPA. Stewart maybe, but I just think you've got to look at the depth of the position before you take a guy in the first. I think BPA works for the first 10-15 picks. Then teams really have to start looking at other things as well.

I understand what you are saying but ....

If you have a board and you list the players in order and it get to you and you have (example) Stewart rated slightly above Kenny Phillips or Michael Oher, and with how deep this draft is at RB, even though I have Stewart rated slightly higher I would take the biggiest need over the BPA by taking the OL or Safety before I would the RB because of my value chart of position.

Actually I think BPA works more so in the latter rounds than it does in the first round because a lot of guys are rated so closely with one another.

The way I see the later rounds is that you choose more the guys you like, because of the exact reason you wrote here: guys are rated so closely together.

I think BPA applies more to the early 1st round because the talent level is so much higher. And BPA is the smartest way to draft, as long as you don't have glaring needs that need to be addressed.

The Texans took bpa with their 1st rd. pick the last two drafts. Mario you can argue Bush & Amobi you can argue Willis but according to their draft board they selected bpa. thats all I can say, I'm finished on this subject :toast2:

Anyone think Rice could last until we pick in the 3rd ? He may not be the biggest or fastest but that guy just produces .... and has proven he can carry the load .

Over the last ten drafts there have been an average of 7 RB's taken before the Texans' 3rd round pick. So how many backs are in front of Rice?

like life the draft can be unfair  the one back we (tulexan) can agree on (James Davis, Clemson) removes his name from the draft, my guy (Jonathan Stewart) will not be selected by the Texans cause they don't draft rb's in the 1st, now tulexan favorite RB Ray Rice might just be sitting there for the Texans taking in the 3rd rd. go figure :dangit:

I'm on the Beerlover boat.

Yes, alot of the running backs this draft seem to have relatively close talent, the thing is, they seem to have fairly high talent. 95% of the players that I see people wanting, I can see going before our 79th pick in the 3rd. Theres a definate 3 going in the first (McFadden, Steward, Mendenhall) I can see 1 or 2 more going in the late rounds of the first, I can also see around 5-7 more going before we pick again in the 3rd. So, pick the running back you want the texans to get. Rate him on a list compared to the other running backs in this draft, and see if his number is 8-12 and we "might" have a shot at him.

Remember when we drafted Jacoby there were alot of WRs taken right after him.

I'm personally a big fan of Mendenhall, if he's there when we pick and is one of the clear cut best players available, and we draft him, I just might have to run around campus (Texas State University) hollering my little head off. (Its not like we pick again till the third)

It'd be one thing if the guy was going to be the primary guy in '08. But he is not.

The fact of the matter, at least from my tree, whoever they pick...will be behind every veteran on the roster at the begining of camp. And unless Ahmen and three other guys go down all he will be in '08 is the (a) platoon guy. You've seen Kubiak operate now up close and personal though two off seasons. What does this HC of ours do to the young backs ? He runs them through the ringer. If they don't colapse under the presure, they get (earn) some touches. If they spit the bit...they go into the dog house. They spit the bit bad....like on a first touch fumble...they get cut.

Break out the Momma Cass records and dream a little dream and all of that...
A Rb is going to have to blow Kubes away befor he's going to pick him high. He's looking for the bargins at RB to keep the cap costs low. Anything that floats down the board into the third or forth round is going to be bargin if they hit the correct guy. And the guy is bear at standing in front of the canon fire and doing what he believes is the correct thing.
