Day 1 Training Camp Highlights, and Amobi & McCardell

It was nice to see the veteran McCardell talking route running with Andre in that one little snippet. It would have been a shame going into this year with Andre being the most experienced guy out there. This is only going to make him even more dominant as he continues to learn and expand his game from legit NFL WR's.

A couple nice INT's of the D (calm down y'all both where off of Sage); with the teams and coaches reaction to Orr's being something I don't recall seeing that often. Orr got up, and made a great play.

Brandon Frye hurt his right ankle this morning. Not sure of the extent. He was definitely in pain and spent the last hour of practice on the trainers table.

I stayed over with the offensive and defensive lines pretty much the whole time. There was a while there where the DB's were up against the WR's on the middle field, but that was about it. I didn't get to see much of Schaub.

Mario looks great. He was doing really well getting past blockers in the training exercises they had going. Amobi looked a bit crude, but he definitely has a lot of potential. I was really really impressed with Mario though, his weight loss has given him a bit more speed and agility, as well as his healed foot.

As far as offensive line goes, Winston looked excellent. He has done a lot better than I expected despite his short arm span. Frye had some good plays, but he seemed to get beat by the bigger guys, so we will have to see how he pans out.

:fans:

Also, as a side note, I finally got to meet Texans Chick. It was pretty cool!

The thing I like about McCardell, and I agree with what many have said about him being a possesion type reciever, he is really savy at exploiting the zone defense, he can find the soft spot and get open, that coupled with Schaub's quick decision making should help get some 1st downs and help out AJ a whole bunch.

Sucks to hear about Frye's ankle, hopefully he just rolled it over and it is not a high ankle sprain or anything that will linger.

When a cast off from one of the better rosters in the league makes you giddy, your club has a problem. McCardel is subtration by addition. anything that takes target away from the two young guys is not a good thing. It's only setting the process back a year if he makes the roster.

so competition during TC has suddenly become a bad thing for our team? im not buying that. every offseason we should be bringing in people to compete with the talent that is already on the team.

outside of andre johnson and kevin walter, there is alot of question marks (im sure jacoby jones will make the roster since he was a first day pick). assuming that we carry 5 WRs this season, that will leave 2 roster spots open to the following people who have a chance at making the squad:

andre davis, bethel johnson, jerome mathis, david anderson, or keenan mccardell

i think mccardell has a pretty good chance. mathis might not survive another practice and anderson is hopefully eligible for the practice squad. and im guessing bethel might have the upper hand on andre. but maybe those two dont make it and anderson gets the 5th spot?

WR
andre johnson
kevin walter
jacoby jones
keenan mccardell
bethel johnson/david anderson

^ that would bother you?

btw there is a really good piece on mccardell. Article from chron.com

i hope you have avoided looking at the current depth chart too.
