Da'Quan Bowers

The Bad news: Peterson, Quinn, Prince A, Dareus, Miller will probably all be gone by the time the Texans pick.

Good new: Da'Quan Bowers probably falls right into their lap.

I've seen some recent mocks with the Texans taking him, and according to an interview, he has visited all 15 of the top teams.

What are peoples' thoughts on Bowers?

I know he stood up alot in college when he rushed, but can he play OLB in the NFL?

He will be good trade bait if nothing else.

from everything ive read he doesnt transition to a olb. they say hes a perfect fit for a 4-3 and not a good fit for a 3-4.

seems unlikely we would draft, but possible trade bait to move back for someone willing to give him a shot.

I dont think we have the luxury of hoping our first round pick can play this year...and...most of the scouting reports i've read suggest Bowers would not transition well to outside linebacker.

He has more value to teams behind us who use a 4-3 defense.

I still think that if he fell to us we could talk Tampa Bay into moving up for him. Even if we let them have the better end of the deal we would still get something out of it.

According to the chart, we could swap 1st rounders and take their second and it would be pretty fair.

If they are unwilling to give up their second we could take their 3rd and 4th rounders instead.

That trade down would take the Texans from playmaker territory to Kareem Jackson territory though. The Texans need at least one beast on defense (that isn't on roids or returning from injury), not a bunch of second-day picks.

I wouldn;t mind Bowers at all. Netting the best pass rusher in the draft is always good.

At #20 they odds are really good that one of Kerrigan, Smith, or Justin Houston will be on the board.

Bowers is a one-year wonder and still didn't live up to the hype that surrounded him as a high school phenom. He has injury issues and I see some serious flaws in his game.

I wouldn't touch him in the first round no matter how badly I need a defensive end...

Doesn't matter how good he is if his knee isn't going to hold up.

If we could move to 20 and get an extra 2nd we would be crazy to pass on that. We need body's on D badly.

DE!
Mario - Coming off injury/surgery never played in a 3/4 has voiced concern about how he will fit.

Smith - played in a 3/4 in Arizona and hated it so much he left. Has also voiced his concerns about playing in another 3/4.

backups? You tell me.

DT!
Mitchell - a undersized second year player that is penciled in as the starter right now. He is the guy that is supposed to keep interior Linemen off our Middle LB's? Give me a break.

Cody - really? seriously?

ILB!
Ryans - coming off a major year ending injury. If and I say IF he is healthy he should be ok.

Cushing - they have him penciled in at MLB. He looked like **** in the middle last year when he took over for Ryans. Hell he looked like crap when they moved him back to the outside other than one game. I think we all know he played beyond his true ability his rookie season. Maybe if we get him a wizinator.

Backups?

Sharpton - I actually think he may have a chance. But who knows? Has he ever played in a 3/4?

Who else is there?

OLB!

Barwin - insert picture here of him sitting on the field last year with his foot facing the wrong way. Now factor in that he has never played in a 3/4 before and only really has a few year in all of his football playing career playing defense at all.

Jamison - he might end up ok but.......

Backups? Again who else is there?

Safety!
Quin - making a move to safety, who knows how that will work.

Nolan - I actually think he has a chance to be pretty good but again who knows.

backups????

CB!
Jackson - If he can stay on his feet maybe he can improve from last year.

Brice-McCain - Really???

This defense needs so much its really going to be impossible to fill all the needs in one offseason. The more picks the better.

The Texans need a playmaker on defense, not 3 more mediocre bodies. You can get bodies in free agency (I would expect Marcus Spears to sign).

One DeMarcus Ware helps a defense more than 7 Frank Okams, Troy Nolans, and Barbers

There will be playmakers throughout this draft. It's time for Smith to find us one whether that's at #11 or #20.

I'd make that trade and take Justin Houston in a heartbeat.

I didnt suggest we trade down to the 5th round. And not every one after the 11th pick is mediocre. How about 7 more Ryans(2nd), Charles Spencers(3rd), Eric Winstons(3rd) and Owen Daniels(4th)? Does one Ware help more than 7 of them? And drafting at 11 does not assure you of getting a Ware either.

Every year people fall in love with the players at the top of the draft. Do yourself a favor and go and look back at the top 15 picks in recent drafts and then tell me if you feel the same way.

A 3rd round pick isn't worth dropping 10 spots in the first round, especially not one from the Bucs.

Of course top 15 has plenty of busts, but you rarely get superstars by trading down.

The Texans don't need anymore role players, they need one dominant player of the defense, at whatever postion they can get.

Where did you get those numbers from. I suggested dropping 9 spots for an extra second. And picking 11 doesnt guarantee a dominate player. Hell picking number one doesnt guarantee getting one.

Even so this defense needs solid role players way more than one superstar. We have no depth and alot of players projected to start that either dont really fit or are playing positions they have never really played before. One player no matter how good isnt going to make that big of a difference.

This is not a Madden video game. There are very few players that are good enough to make that big of a difference on their own. Very few!

I would probably take any of these guys over Bowers at 11 or 20, I'd definitely take Smith or Kerrigan over Bowers.
But BTW, for those knocking Bowers as a "one-year" wonder, that's basically what Clay Matthews was at USC, so don't think that's a disqualifier ?
But the thing is Bowers just doesn't fit in the 3-4 at any positon very well, he's basically a 4-3 strong-side DE who's even got problems there since he's got a flimsy resume as a run-stopper.
