maybe in being a bad evaluator of talent but not in business..look at the difference in the stadiums. Even Texas Stadium was better than that place the Raiders play.
Didn't somebody post on here that the Raiders are probably going to angle to try to move back to LA when their lease is up?

Dude looks like Skeletor. I can never get past that. He's got that old parchment skin stretched so tight over his skull that he just looks freakish to me. You would think that with that much money he could afford a better grade of plastic surgery. Something a little more natural looking.

You're reading too much into what I wrote. But..... I don't fault Jerry for his business skills, but a lot of the Cowboys success with the business and marketing success was there long before JJ owned the team.
As for Al and stadiums, I'm sure he would jump to any new stadium being built in Cali if he could find one.

True but he was the masteming behind alot of the stadium sponsorships that were at first refused and then applauded to make the owners and league money. He is A-1 on the product, just not at GM.
I agree, I just don't see JJ or anyone else having the same success in a smaller market. Buying the Dallas Cowboys over say the St. Louis Rams gave him a great start, and helps with his marketing. He could have spent the rest of his born days trying to get the others to allow stadium sponsorships, and may not have succeeded. JJ has been a huge part in making billion$ for the NFL.
This embarrassment must have been the last straw.
Actually under Bum Bright's ownership the Cowboys were losing money. He was a horrid owner.

I believe I did. I mean, all signs do point to the Raiders moving back to L.A. Oakland is already going to lose the Athletics to San Jose, so I believe they may try something to keep the Raiders in Oakland. There have been talks of building a new stadium for the Raiders...but, thats all they have been so far...just talk.

He's the reason I'm no longer a Cowboys fan. From 78'/79' when I discovered them as a kid, up until 89' when he did what he did to Tom Landry, I won't even think twice about them until he sells the team or dies.
Still bothers me to this day that Tom broke down saying good-bye to his team all because of that dude.

I don't care for the Raiders as a team but the fans are freaky loyal to them. Got to admire that.
It was wrong but Tom forgave him. Perhaps that is the proof a what a good man he was.
I had season tickets for the Cowboys at that time. I can't begin to tell you how many fans in my section that I had sat next to for many years were all in agreement that Coach Landry needed to be replaced..that it was time for some new blood.
But still..he definitely deserved far better.

He didn't do it the right way but it was the right thing to do. Landry was past his prime and as a long time Cowboy fan I was excited about the change. I don't get the concept of people quitting teams to tell you the truth. You can't control owners, etc but if they are your lifelong team there should be loyalty. I don't agree with everything Jerry has done and he pisses me off plenty but overall he turned around the franchise and made the gap between the 25 straight winning seasons and the next SBs pretty short. He is great for the league and for the Cowboys except in how he has handled the GM moves off and on. He needs to back away there. Pissed or happy I can't fault his wanting to win or enthusiasm.
Certainly can't envision another coach in the NFL ever being HC for 29 years for the same team. I think most can agree the change could have been handled better, even if Coach Landry was stubborn, but most of the time new owners, presidents, managers, etc. want and do choose their own people.
It could have and should have been handled much better..Jerry has admitted that.

The man was an innovative force in the game of football in his tenure as head coach and brought your miserable team to five SUPERBOWLS! Two of which they won. The man wanted to retired after one more season and the Lizzard who now owns your team fired him unceremoniously as if NONE of that mattered.
You guys talk a mean game about Cowboy "traditions" but the way you got rid of Landry shows that YOU don't even respect those traditions. Landry should have been allowed his "farewell season". He was a LEGEND for god's sake! Jones robbed that great man of his dignity. If he wants to be on the sidelines then he should coach the team his damned self.
There was no talk of Landry wanting to retire after "one more year" that I ever heard. Where did you get that from?
I bet you won't find Cowboys fans that respected Coach Landry more than Frog and myself. Like I said I was there and the buzz in the section I was in was that Tom needed to go. The team was declining and he was not a man who liked change. I think most fans thought the team would just continue to decline. Still I don't know a single Cowboys fan...myself included...that wanted him fired the way he was. If people don't like Jerry to this day because of that I get that....
but I always liked the Cowboys more than a coach...a GM....an owner.

Well said. You can say whatever about me but don't try and tell me about Cowboy tradition. I grew up living and breathing the stuff. Have for over 30 years now. Landry is an institution but at the time of his firing he was still trying to run a version of the flex defense and was too stubborn to chage offensive philosophies. Bum Bright was hemorrhaging money from oil deals, etc and had criticized Landry's offense and coaching for 3 years straight. Landry was on borrowed time with him. Bum admitted later that he tried to get Tex Schram to fire him in 1987 and that he would have fired him if he knew Jerry would have gotten this heat. He had to sell and when Jones came in he brought Johnson along. After that everyone knew what was going to happen but they still had to fly to Austin to tell Landry. He didn't do it the right way. Everyone ackowledges that but it was the right thing for moving on and for starting a new direction. Good firing, horrible form. JJ admits this

Overall I still loved the players, team, etc. You don't quit that over those things. Just plain silly and fair weathered. When you are a fan you can't personally have a stake in the ownership or how they act so you keep with the team and players and hope every year. And you ***** and moan when things go bad. Jerry helped bridge a gap that had been growing between the 25 straight winning seasons and the decline.

& rings. Jimmy got you two more and that PUNK muff-hugga Neil O'Donnel GAVE you the fifth one. Frog said most fans were "Excited" with the change. Most of the Cowboy fans I know were pissed and many jumped ship. I don't like Jerry effectively BECAUSE of how he treated Landry. The man deserved better. The way he got rid of him was a notch above Bud Adams' firing of Bum Phillips.

Don't misquote me or try and twist stuff. I said I was excited about the change. Go reread it. You are reading too much into it. I didn't say Landry deserved it or wasn't someone I admired, etc. He was one of the greatests and I grew up admiring it and watching it. I was excited because after being privileged to watch so many great teams and winning seasons they started to falter and 3-13 teams wasn't something people were used to watching. The tactics Landry were using weren't working. From that standpoint I was excited for a change. And most of us were pissed at how Landry was fired but to a man most said it was needed...at least real fans that didn't cry and leave. In fact alot of my family that grew up in Baltimore and were Colt fans and hated the Cowboys actually started to watch them more. As for how Jerry treated Landry. He didn't "treat" him a certain way like a long running snub. He actually did everything but call the guy a god in every press conference but once he bought the team, the cat was out of the bag and he admitted and apologized for what happened. What bugs me is that you were saying about Landry getting one more year, etc. It simply wasn't true and Bum Bright admits that. I literally cried and died with SB losses as a kid and have seen it all with them. The fact that people jump off decades of cheering because of one move shows they weren't real fans to start.

Actually the last few years of Coach Landry's tenure with the Cowboys I was one that thought (along with MANY others as I said before) he should be replaced. Because of my great admiration for him I never wanted to see him fired but that was coming....even if Jerry hadn't done it Bum was going to do it if you read Frog's post.
And again MY following the Cowboys has always been about the team..not any coach..not any owner..not any GM.
I wasn't going to "jump ship" as you put it over that. I understand why people feel that way but to each his own!

Never saw or read that. I think his stubborness...one of good attributes for the league..was having him want to correct the ship. He always talked about how his schemes would work despite the late years naysaying.
Personally, no one on coach or player is bigger than the team, and it doesn't matter whether I like the person or not. I recall when Bud Adams fired Bum Phillips. IIRC Wade heard about the firing on the news before Bum knew. I was very angry at how the firing was handled because I really liked Bum, and unlike Coach Landry, the Oilers were not in a state of decline. I did not like the next coach he hired to replace Bum either, but did not cease to be an Oilers fan.
There are band wagon fans everywhere, but I think the Cowboys are tried and tested, and even in our worst years, we still had our loyal followers all over the world. How many other teams have such a huge following although it's been over a decade since we've had a playoff win?

I know Duane didn't talk to anybody..players or coaches..weird cat. He did have that infamous quote that if the SB was the ultimate game why is it played every year...
And Coach Landry had Roger and Craig doing the QB shuffle...one in for one play...the other the next. That just wasn't going to work.
