If he had decided to retire, Orton would've had to repay $3 million of a $5 million signing bonus. Since he's being cut, he will not be forced to pay the club back.

Orton was fined nearly $70,000 for skipping all of the team's minicamp workouts.

When the Cowboys signed quarterback Brandon Weeden on March 17, it was thought to be more or less as an insurance policy because Orton was unsure if he wanted to continue playing pro football. With Orton on the roster, Weeden would have been the No. 3 quarterback. Now, Weeden will go into training camp as Tony Romo's backup, although Caleb Hanie and Dustin Vaughan will also compete for the job.

Oh he was unsure about whether he wanted to retire or not - waited until Dallas brought in an insurance policy, and then went nahhhh - I'll not retire so you can cut me.

Little bit of a dick move from Orton if I'm understanding it correctly - although it is bad for Dallas, so it is hilarious.

Wonder why Orton wasn't placed on nfl reserve did not report like Chris Johnson was in 2011...........doesn't count against the roster, does not get any non guaranteed money, and the team still retains his rights.

Gives them 3+ mil in cap relief this year. I'm assuming they gave up waiting for him to decide whether he wants to play or not.

Most of he rumors in these parts are saying that Orton does not legitimately want to play football. The questions started with why did he take the cowboy back-up job last year when there were a couple of Fitzpatrick situations where he could have been at least the short term starter. the not sure about football thing came really right after the season. Just reads like a guy who has made enough money and does not want to compete...that's the way it is being played up here at least.

Maybe he's watched Romo gradually and progressively get beat to heck and doesn't want to follow suit. And maybe he is still suffering from PTSD after being benched for Tim Tebow.
