:headhurts: Cha. That statement reminds me of an old joke. (Doc, Toronto & Gary...don't kick my butt over this one)


It's the late 50s and Sammy Davis Jr. walks into a synagogue and comes upon a rabbi who's facing the other way tidying up and says "Rabbi I want to convert to Judaism." The Rabbi looks up and sees that the person who made the statement is a short black man and says "You want to be a Jew?"

"Yes rabbi!." Sammy says emphatically grinning from ear to ear. "Very much." The rabbi sighs and hangs his head and says "You don't have enough problems?"
 
Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder told USA Today the team's name will not change.

"We will never change the name of the team," Snyder told the newspaper in an interview this week. "As a lifelong Redskins fan, and I think that the Redskins fans understand the great tradition and what it's all about and what it means, so we feel pretty fortunate to be just working on next season."

Imagine that they try to do this but take the least difficult route of keeping the logo and colors but changing the name. Just for conversation's sake say they went "Warriors", "Braves", or something like that. Maybe they strike an affiliation with a particular tribe that's open to the idea like the Seminoles did in Florida. What tribes were native to the D.C. area? Conoy and Powhatan per some map I found online (reliability unknown).

Many People are just going to continue to call them the Redskins. It wouldn't be enough for those who want it changed and nothing would be accomplished. It would have to go with both the name and logo changing and probably even then if you keep the colors it stays "Redskins" in the minds of most fans. No, they would literally have to change everything colors and all. Maybe they could keep the red as secondary color (if it doesn't hurt too many Native American's feelings that something in this world is "red" or that people use the word to describe "things") to tie-in to their past.

If you go almost anything related to Native Americans the rank and file will continue to refer to the team as the "Redskins" and then you will have a bunch of people using that word to describe a team named after some other more acceptable term for Native Americans. Better? Not really I don't imagine.

Dominant color, logo and name would have to go. I think they'll fight this to the end of time if possible.


I bet that you create a huge market for Redskins throwback jerseys which the league can't really fill if they're going to walk-the-walk of getting away from this name. Enter the counterfeit jersey folks in China to fill the void. On the positive side you know anyone with a new Redskins jersey is wearing a fake I guess. Depending on how many people are wearing them this may or may not be something they can deal with. It would be mighty embarrassing for the NFL if much of the stadium was filled with fake jerseys every Sunday.
