Cut down day - Part 1

So we've got to get down to 65 tomorrow minus NFLE exemptions. I believe we have 7 here so it would really be 72, I guess. Either way, who will be the surprise cuts? Personally, I see two 2nd stringers getting a pink slip, out of courtesy so that they can get some reps in and maybe catch on with another team... Billy Miller and Lewis Sanders.

Maybe Hollings gets a courtesy boot as well. Hopefully the front office will own up to their mistake on this one and not keep him around for another season.

That last receiver spot is gonna be a tough decision on Sept. 2. From what I can tell, Sloan Thomas has played his way ahead of Starling and Kasper.

we have a sharp drop in talent at CB behind Faggins. I think we may hold onto Sanders for a bit longer.

Miracles never cease. I actually do agree with you about something. ;)

I keep these receivers. Johnson, Gaff, Bradford, Armstrong, Mathis, Swinton, Thomas. I get rid of Baxter, Hollings, and a TE to make room for that to be possible.

if we would cut bradford off that list.. it would be alot easier to fit those 6 on the roster.

I'm thinking we have to keep 3 TEs to run our offense effectively. How many times do we line up with 2 TEs, what if one of them gets hurt, than we only have 1 TE, and can't run that formation. Murphy, Miller, Bruener

7 wide receivers? :whew I agree with that also, but I serously doubt Capers will go for it.

That's the beauty of Wells being able to play RB and FB. He provides depth at both positions and allows 2 roster spots for the price of one.

Ummmm your wrong.. hehe its also special teams player... 3 for the price of 1

I really like El Tejano's take on the WRs and how to make it work.

I completely agree with his list of WRs.

(1) Sloan Thomas has proved he can hold onto the ball and make some good yards-after-catch. (2) Mathis is a no-brainer because of his WR/KR ability. (3) Swinton is reliable in the WR/KR positions, as well. The mainstays of (4) AJ, (5) Bradford and (6) Gaff are expected.

My only dillema is between Armstrong and Starling. Too bad Kasper didn't come to us last year. He's got a future due to his toughness. Reminds me a lot of a Wayne Chrebet-type of WR.

We don't need three TEs. We don't even throw to ONE of them anyways. I'd like to see us run 5 WRs out there like the old run-and-shoot days. Could you imagine us trotting onto the field AJ, Bradford, Gaffney, Mathis, and Swinton? That'd get a defensive coordinator's attention!

I like the list of WR's too ..... Thomas has earned a spot on the roster , Mathis and Swinton both have value as reciever and Kr/Pr .

As for running out w/ 5 WR's ..... NOT in this lifetime with that O-line ! :tomato:

This is probably a dumb stupid question, but I really dont know.

Can we take one of our wideout and use him more at TE? Like a Kasper?

I think a LB would see time at TE before a WR . Probably Wong in this case .

Few more cuts as reported by Caper's on 790:

chris johnson
Kevin casper
devin pitts
corey spears
jason anderson
kendrick starling

There were a few more scrubs that I didn't catch.

Sears is a mild surprise.

Kasper and Starling should catch on somewhere. Are you sure Donovan Morgan wasn't in there somewhere?

Looks like Sloan has made the team.

Don't forget that Simmons can play corner and both safety spots effectively giving us extra depth there too for the price of 1 roster spot.

I'm guessing they're gonna give Morgan some more time since he just joined the team like a week ago. If Starling clears waivers, is he still PS eligible? Morgan will likely end up on the PS as well when its all said and done.

I'm surprised Corey Sears was cut, too. But I guess with Payne, Smith, Walker, Deloach, TJ, and Ioane we currently have better options.

i dont know about yall but i really liked kevin kasper....but we have alot of talent at wide reciever now so i guess everyone else beat him out, still thought he woulda done great for us though especially as a special teamer.

Sears' fate was sealed on draft day and there's a reason Kasper has been with four teams in five seasons. He is to the offense what Jason Bell is to the defense. Don't be surprised when McKenzie beats out Bell for the last CB spot.

Jason Bell is in the league because of his ability as gunner and overall ST play. If the decision was based on his ability at corner he would have been gone long ago. I would not be surprised by his cut, but I won't bet against him making the final 53 again.

I really believe Bradford will be/ should be cut.

WRs: AJ, Gaffney, Armstrong, Mathis, SThomas, Swinton. with those 6, what purpose does he serve?

plus, no cap hit and no untapped potential.

Yes, that's common knowledge and I thought that would come across in the Kasper-Bell analogy. Oh well...

How serious was that hamstring injury to McKenzie? Was it just a tweak? I was mainly wondering since we haven't seen him since the Broncos game. Any word on if he will play against TB?

the collective conscious of this board
we are the BORG, prepare to be assimulated.

only ones on that list that even are worth mentioning are Sears and Kasper, IMHO. The rest were 'cannon fodder' before training camp even began.

And I am all for Bradford NOT being on the final 53 roster.

Capers said he would be back "doing some things" in practice today, so that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of him being able to play Thursday. His injury is definitely working against him at this point.

I think that's it exactly. A couple of years ago we were hearing about how Corey Sears was coming along and turning into a real asset behind our starters but I think he plateaued at some point and now in 2005 we've got a somewhat better grade of "quality depth" than we did back then.

I guess Ioane continues to get better or maybe he's hit his peak too but he's better than Sears. In the first couple of years we brought in so many guys and almost all of them were just placeholders for future Texans. We had time to watch projects grow. There will be less of that from here on out.

Why we kept Bradford over Kasper I will never figure out. Kasper has hands and Bradford doesn't. Kasper was the talk of the camp based on some of his catches. I still think Swinton got lucky and made the big return. Without that I think Starling continues to be in the line up. Well, we all have favorites and some win and some don't. The truth is this ball club is going to have a difficult time this year.

We've kept more than we can because of the overseas connection. In reality they have to cut quite a few more and its going to be interesting to see who remains.

The backfield will be desimated before this is over in order to keep Capers defense stalked with plenty of players. In fact I think we will be lucky if Capers keeps any offensive players. He really doesn't need an offense anyway. All he has to due is down it 3 times(translation - run the ball 3 times) and then punt it. He will then hold the other team to 3 and out and then we will return the punt with our special teams as that is his true plan for our offense this year. Should the other team score we will then use our kickoff unit to return the ball and restore our lead....................

:embarrass:  :bomb: :goodnight
