‘America’s Team’ falls to 7-8 and slips its grip on the NFC East—Is a Jerry Jones overhaul coming?
“America’s Team” today is more like America’s Most Resented Team, when you consider the attention still bestowed upon a Cowboys franchise which, since 1996, has won fewer playoff games than the Chargers.
Cowboys media coverage remains obsessive, like they’re the biggest deal in the sport. Watch this week, as all the national sports yakkers parse Jones’s somber Philly-loss postmortem, and debate who’s up, who’s down, and who’s potentially out in Dallas. Could this really be the end for coach Jason Garrett? Or is he truly tenured for life, like a federal judge?
If you dislike the Cowboys—or, you’re a fan of an actually pretty good NFL team, like the Houston Texans—all this public hand-wringing is going to drive you crazy. Cowboys chat often feels like legacy buzz, or worse, a naked grab for ratings, bearing no relation to the actual power dynamic of the NFL. The Cowboys are indeed popular—believe me, this stuff always gets the eyeballs—and they’re sometimes fun, but they have been underachievers for decades now. Even if they sneak into the playoffs, it’s doubtful they’ll be anything more than a tasty snack for the Niners or Saints. Breathless coverage of any 7-8 team is like watching human beings endlessly discuss the soap dish in a midrange hotel bathroom. This matters how? (The Cowboys aren’t even an amusing mess, like the Buccaneers, or even the Browns.)
