Couch to work out for the Texans

From ESPN INsider

Couch drawing interest
<Feb. 14> Former Browns QB Tim Couch is expected to work out for the Texans this week, reports ESPN.com's John Clayton. Couch also is on the Dolphins' radar, and the Seahawks could be interested, as well.

Previously, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the Bengals are considering Couch as a backup to Carson Palmer for next season. Current backup Jon Kitna is expected to leave via free agency.

One other possible destination for Couch is Tennessee. Couch recently worked out for the Titans.

Couch, the No. 1 pick of the 1999 draft, missed all of last season recovering from shoulder surgery.

You beat me too it, maybe you can read something into it..........another No. 1 overall pick and some added competition. I don't know.

Interesting. Wonder what their motive is for that. *scratches head*

Could be a possible cheap vet stand in for Young or a possible legit vet to push/compete with Carr. I would like that. Could be another Drew Henson sign and flip deal.

I dont know alot about couch and maybe my associations are bad but didn't he suck?

Whats the best info on him?

Yes, he sucks. That's why we want him. :)

he also played for some crap teams. It will be interesting if we do take him to see what Kubiak can do for him as well.

Maybe he will be signed and coached by Kubiak and traded for a 3rd round pick next yr...and Kubiak will be known as QB saver...

If Tony Banks is going to cost more than Couch, then it would be a good move. If not, why bring Couch in? Hasn't played in a year. Didn't do well as a starting, former #2 pick QB, and is just as immobal as Banks. tony likes it here, will continue to be a team guy, and will continue to be a decent backup for Carr.

Their first 60 games courtesy of Keith at hpf.

David Carr 60 games, 941/1628, 57.8%, 10624 yds, 48 TD, 53 INT, 1040 rush yds, 6 rush TD
Tim Couch 62 games, 1025/1714, 59.8%, 11131 yds, 64 TD, 67 Int, 567 rush yds, 2 rush TD

But he had such a good line and weapons. What's the deal with him, I heard talk of "dead arm." Was there an actual injury, surgery?

There was surgery..no time to provide links at the moment.

Couch is a former 1st pick in the draft and if he is floating around it makes sense to see if he is healthy. He is just looking to make a squad at this point in his life and poses no short term threat to anyone not named Dave Ragone.

I think it's a good thing that they're looking at him, but I see it as a small issue....a really small one.

I am seeing orange

Tim Couch to replace Dave Ragone, Tony Banks and that obvious Charley Casserly 4 to 6 round QB that we pick every year

I am behind whatever the new staff wants to do. The only way to cure all of our ills is to make changes, the best changes will be informed decisions and to do that you must consider all of the possibilities.

I might be mistaken, but I don't think Couch made it out of training camp with GB.

I think its funny that Couch and Carr have very similar numbers after 60 games. One is out of football as a bust and the other was given a contract equal to the best QBs in the NFL. Ironic don't you think.

:wherewill I'll be one of the few remaining fourth quarter Texans fans left in the stand, just like last year. :)

Or, Tony Banks sucks and Kubiak knows it and is just doing his homework on a potential Backup with NFL experiance to replace his tired butt. Couch has serious potential and is probably cheap do to the shoulder.
Clevland has been a tough town to play in for a very long time.:homer:

Those stats don't include SACKS. Dopes.

During first four yrs of their career:

Couch....52 games....147 sacks.....avg. 2.83 sacks/game
Carr....60 games....208 sacks....avg. 3.47 sacks/game

Still similar....only a difference of .64 sacks/game.

what else u got? Any other ideas as to why Carr isn't as bad as Couch?:challenge

Face it...they are similar.

Bradford, Capers, Pendry, TE problems, McKinney at center, Wand at LT, DD can't block. It's a team sport. You can't blame everything on one player.

But, I wouldn't have given him a gazillion, billion, trillion dollars either. You never know, Couch could turn out to be the savior, but I wouldn't count on it.

i hate to interject, but we did kinda 2-14 it last year.....we got to get out of the mindset of seeing us as a superpower and accept that its a rebuild....not a reload

You mean Tony Hollings and P-Buck aren't going to carry us to a SB win next year? :idonno:

I don't think Couch had Pendry as an OC and Bradford dropping passes. I also doubt that his protection was as bad, even if he did have almost as many sacks. Shoot, he might've even had a tight-end at some point.

I'm really starting to want Matt Leinhart.

But that one player can not go completely blameless either..... he has faults too.

If I were to place myself in Carr's shoes, then I would have been terrible also. He had Jello for an OL, a stick figure for a TE, a stick of butter for a WR, and a bobblehead for a coach. Lets see what a coach with cerebral activity can do this year.

BTW I still like DD and AJ. Maybe the stick of butter was a little too much.

Couch in Houston? Are you kidding? He is way to sensitive for this town. He cried when Cleveland boo'd him. No better here. In fact we might be a little more crittical. Unless he is going for a Klenex deal. He would step out of his front door and burst into tears.

Amazing how its always someone elses fault. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Could the .64 sacks per game increase for Carr be because he held onto the ball too long, or because he pulled the ball down and ran too quickly instead of standing in the pocket and trying to make a play. Remember, Carr isn't a running QB like Vick, he is supposed to distribute the ball.

And, watch it with the name calling, dodohead.

No he didn't suck. He's another QB who hasn't been given the necessary conditions to be successful. If I was Tim Couch I'd sign with the Texans in a heartbeat just to get on an NFL roster with Gary Kubiak coaching him.

Interesting that if this actually turns into a FA signing Gary Kubiak will be trying to resurrect the careers of two QB's who got the Palmer expansion treatment.

If Couch is healthy I don't think is a bad move at all. If he's got his shoulder fixed and it'll hold up then he's a man trying to rebuild his career and that has to start somewhere. He comes here, plays a year or two with us and maybe he puts some pressure on Carr once he gets settled in. If he just looks good in limited duty but doesn't take the starting spot (assuming that Carr improves as well under Kubiak) then he does backup duty here and then takes his next available shot at a starting position once teams get the message that he's back to being 100% and can play the game.

But they do. They always do and they always will blame it all on one player or one coach.

People talking about how Carr and Couch are similar have a point. It's just not the one most of them are trying to make. They both were first picks of crappy expansions teams and they both got pressured early and often. They were both Chris Palmer projects and under him they were both headed in the same direction. Niether one is finished in the NFL yet.

Where they differ is that Couch got regular coaching changes (not unlike Harrington in Detroit) which wasn't helpful and Couch had to compete for his job sooner than Carr (which was good). Unfortunately Couch got hurt and then tried to come back with Green Bay before he got his injury fixed.

*shaking off cobwebs from long absence* Bwuh? Tim Couch? Don't we have our quota of first-round QBs who haven't really panned out? Was Heath Shuler too busy in his Congressional campaign?

(Quip mode off)

There's not a thing to lose by working him out, or letting him play along all through camp. This is a little like continuing to give chances to Bennie Floppru. Nobody's seen either of them really play in years, and they just might be worth the wait--but they also just might never come back to a regular-season game. If the staff has the patience and time for that kind of thing, then go for it.

I don't see a downside to this, other than possibly taking away some coaching/mentoring time from the starting QB who so desperately needs it. If he's really healed, Couch could be a steal. But if he's not, that'll become clear by the end of camp--just as it was in Green Bay.

I think that is the exact reason for it ...I'd still prefer Josh McCown though.

I think Couch still has a lot of upside. The reason he struggled after he was cut by the Browns, was that he was injured.

Did he show up in his "clubbing" outfit that he wore at the Heismans last year.?:) My bad, I thought it said "Crouch"..lol

Oh great...this is exactly what we need. My opinion is that he should still be in Cleveland...I always though he was better than Holcomlb anyway...Couch just didn't know how to shut his mouth.

i'm thinking signing couch would be the end of ragone's term here not banks...ragone is a young qb who wants to be something more than the clipboard holder for his career...he is a RFA and maybe we can get some team to trade us a 2nd day pick for him

I think it would probably be the end for Banks. Couch is three years older than Carr and should be considered a veteran by now, and Ragone is a whole lot cheaper to keep than Banks is. If they sign Couch, it has to be as the #2 QB, so Banks doesn't have much reason to be kept, we don't need to keep him and pay him $1.5 million a year to be our 3rd QB. Ragone might be gone too, but I think if we sign Couch (assuming we even do sign him) it will be the end of Banks for sure.

Could be for some posturing to let teams know we are shopping for a QB and possibly generate a trade for Carr.

Or,

To appease the fans who think Carr should go, they're seen working out other QB's and let the fans know that they tried to find a better QB than Carr but had no luck

We aren't trading Carr. If we were, we would have either franchised him or signed him to a 2 year contract.

Carr is staying, if Couch is even signed, it will be as a back up just like in Green Bay.

As much as I like Dave Ragone, I think he is just living the dream. He will never, ever be more than a second string QB.

Personally Couch is useless to me. Ragone might as well be the backup and either a 7th round QB or an undrafted rookie free agent guy that has some upside and will do well being the third string and some time in NFLE. No reason to waste money on a guy like Couch. Banks should be gone regardless. I mean I dont like Ragone, but it is about time for him to be the 2nd stringer.
