PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A clock error added 52 seconds to the fourth quarter of the Patriots-Steelers game Sunday. The extra time aided the Patriots during a winning drive that ended with Adam Vinatieri's 43-yard field goal with 1 second remaining.

The Patriots won 23-20, their fourth victory against the Steelers in five games since 2001, including AFC championship game victories during the 2001 and 2004 seasons.

The NFL acknowledged the mistake Monday, with director of officiating Mike Pereira issuing a statement: ``The on-field officiating crew, which oversees the official game clock operated in the press box, failed to recognize that the clock was improperly reset.''

It's not like they added 52 seconds right before NE got the ball back. The error occurred with 14:51 left in the game, according to the article. You can't point to this as the Patriots' advantage given that it set off a string of events that would have changed the game anyway.

Been thinking about this as I read through my copy of Patriots Football Weekly...

Belichick said in his postgame conference, "After the (Patrick) Pass catch-and-run, we were in field goal range. We tried to run the clock down... kind of like going for the last shot in a basketball game."

Before Vinatieri came out, the Pats ran two plays: Dillon run for no gain, and a 6-yard throw to Givens. Those two plays burned way more than 52 seconds off the clock (the first two, starting at 1:21, took less than 30 seconds). It would have been a 49-yard FG instead of 43, but still very make-able for Mr. Vinatieri.

SO... even if every play went exactly the same, the Patriots still would have had time to burn.

I agree with you that the game would have ended the same. Heck the Steelers were trying to give it away with crummy kick coverage letting y'all start at the 38. But, the two plays you are refering to took exactly 52 seconds off the clock with the Dillon run starting at 57 secs and the Vinateri kick going at 5 secs. Y'all undoubtedly could have gotten set for the kick much faster after the Givens reception if need be though so the end result remains the same.

Not only that but with basically a full quarter left, BOTH teams got the extra 52 seconds. The fact that it might have benefited New England more, is merely happenstance.

Now you want a true travesty, look no further than the 5th down play in the Colorado (eventual National Champions)/Missouri game in 1990.
 
But did you see the panty waste pass interference on 4th down? That isnt somthing you call in football. Even with no contact he had no way to get to the ball.

How about Vinatieri's kickoff going out of bounds too? That seems forgotten since he hit the game-winner. But that was a boneheaded play too.

Right. That's what I said in response to this same thread on our Bengals board. You can't just look at the score with 52 seconds left and determine the outcome. Just like the sportscasters who blame a one point loss on a missed extra point on the opening drive. Baseball guys saying that if a player wouldn't have been called out at second on a bad call, he would have scored when the next batter singled. Even though the next batter might not have gotten the same pitch with a runner at second. He may have been walked with 1st open.

Costas loves to do this. Apparently he's never seen back to the future.

Oh my god, The Squeeler fans are spreading the word all over the N.F.L. about how stupid thier own crew of time keepers are!!! I used to think the Cowboys cried a lot(when you ran the score up on them) But they could do it---no problem, without a word. But THIS is even better. Why would your fans possibly give a hoot, of what happens to the SQUEELERS!!! Give it up buddy! & face it!!! The Patriots HAVE YOUR NUMBER!!! The N.F.L. seems to cater to the SQUEELERS!!! But they still got to cry a little bit(a lot)
 
There is no telling how much time would have been left after the Steeler's TD, because clock management is based upon how much time is left. The Steelers might have scored quicker if there was less time on the clock when they took possession for their last TD drive. I'm sure there would have been a greater sense of urgency.
