CJ Stroud year 2

7. Why did C.J. Stroud wait to sign?

Stroud was the last Texans rookie to sign. And unlike with minicamp and OTAs, CBA rules don’t allow rookies to participate in training camp if their contracts aren't finalized. After Stroud agreed on Monday, six other first-round picks, including Anthony Richardson and Devon Witherspoon, are unsigned.

The first-round signing bonus, total value and guarantee are already slotted for draft picks, but agents can still negotiate over when a player is paid his signing bonuses. That’s what the delay was for Stroud, who will get his full bonus up front.

Last season, Stingley had 80 percent of his signing bonus paid within 15 days of signing. The other 20 percent was paid on or before Dec. 15, according to a source.

Stroud’s contract is projected to be a four-year, $36.279 million deal with a $23.38 million signing bonus, according to Spotrac. He’s expected to have a $6.6 million salary cap hit for the 2023 season.

Texans rookies are expected to arrive Tuesday, the same day as veterans. The first practice begins Wednesday.

8. Will Stroud be the starter?

The rookie quarterback will enter camp in a tie with Davis Mills for the starting job. The expectation is that Stroud will win out.

He was impressive at minicamp and in OTAs. His teammates have been impressed with his leadership and preparation. They say he plays with confidence. Stroud recently hosted the receivers and tight ends in California for a throwing session. They got to know each other better and worked on their timing.

The biggest question is how soon the Texans would name Stroud the starter. They want him to earn the job. Stroud wants to earn it, too.

The first couple of preseason games will likely determine a lot. But the sooner his teammates know and he takes the majority of the first-team snaps, the better. It’ll be up to Stroud to stand out above Mills.

His first practice INT that is caught on video will reignite the S2 concerns.
Bro a member said it was an indication to the type of person he was because he hasn’t signed yet. (Paraphrasing)

So yes sir as soon as he have a bad game. They will come full force lol

In the end Strouds contract was a little less than Young’s which is how it should be but in line by comparison for two QB’s that could easily have gone 1.1. Neither was the obvious choice. It’s just not an issue and CJ should be commended for refusing to miss a day of TC with his teammates. That’s it. Nothing there to over analyze. Edit. In the case of two “equal” QB’s it probably makes sense for the 1.1 to sign first to give an agent for 1.2, working properly, to bring in his client at a lower level.

He didn't miss any practices. Is this still strike one for you? If you say SteelB hijacked your account or you were playing devil's advocate, I will believe you.
Still strike one. I’m sure he’s got his reasons, I don’t know what they are. So it’s hard for me to understand why he didn’t sign when Will Anderson did.

Offsets & lump sum payment were set years ago when Zak Wilson & Trey Lance. Negotiated their deals.

I’ve got nothing against Stroud, but I’m watching his agent. & I think we have good reason to.

…..that Mulugheta fellow is a swell guy. He got Stroud in camp, on time, and didn’t make Cal squeal like a pig during the process.

Neither of those guys were Texans. Can't fault either side for trying to negotiate, Texans had never paid bonus money as a lump sum
I don’t fault Caserio.

QBs drafted two years ago after the #2 overall pick got full bonuses within 15 days.

Last year’s #2 pick got 80% up front & the remainder before Christmas. It’s practically a done deal that Stroud would get his bonus up front, or 90% now & the remainder before Christmas.

What’s the hold up?

I’m not a millionaire, but it seems like arguing over peanuts.

The contract is about more than just how the bonus is paid

Right, that’s where the “I don’t know” & “I don’t understand” language fits in.

The money stuff is just me reacting to recent articles suggesting the delay was about bonus payments. Sounds like we’re on the same page. What’s being said doesn’t make sense.

& that’s where I throw the Mulugheta-Conspiracy in so steelBTexans doesn’t look like a sore thumb

Exactly. If Mulugeta didn't try to get the bonus as a lump sum for Stroud, a case can be made that he didn't do a good job negotiating for his client. At the end of the day, there was no impact if Stroud signed on 6/23 with Anderson or on 07/24.

I'm certain that Mulugeta is well aware of what his previous client did to the Texans and their fans. I doubt he would want his new client to start off on the wrong foot with the Texans and their fans.

Exactly. I still think @thunderkyss is totally disregarding the point that if Young, Burrows, and Lawrence got their signing bonuses upfront and Mulugeta didn't try to get the same for Stroud, a case can be made that he didn't do a good job negotiating for his client.
I’m disregarding Young, Burrows, & Lawrence because they were all #1 overall picks & should have no bearing on the #2 picks contract.

If the number one pick got it, it’s because he was the #1 pick & Caserio should be able to throw that argument out before it even started.

Zak Wilson was selected 2nd overall two years ago and got his signing bonus up front. That would be a better argument giving Stroud a leg to stand on.

& when Caserio starts using 4 letter words like “outlier” Mulageta can come right back with Trey Lance, the 3rd overall pick two years ago who also got his signing bonus up front.

But that was two years ago. Shouldn’t have drug this out so close to TC (tomorrow).

I’d be surprised if Will Anderson got less than 80% upfront. That puts the Texans & Mulageta in a very small framework for negotiations. Again, shouldn’t have gone to the wire over 10% and 150 days.

I don’t think.

He signed and will report and begin practicing on time just like everybody else, so..

I don’t get the butt hurt for a top pick to be signed before TC?

Hey simply just sharing the fact that the 100% money 4 year 36.2 million contract is up front legally signed. Nothing more nothing less but for CJ it's lots of money behind him and now onto 100% playing football. We don't have to worry about such money no? This ain't college.
With that kind of money if it were mine I would also like to have it be done with to resolve such distraction.

How are you getting "butthurt" over the post you quoted?

Am I wrong?

What's Bryce Young's contract got to do with Cj Stroud's?

Isn't Zakk Wilson's, Trey Lance's, Derek Stingley, & Will Anderson's contracts not enough?

I'm not in the least bit upset, just trying to put the pieces together.
