CJ Stroud year 2

Well for 1, this is Slowik’s 1st real gig, so he like CJ is still learning. The difference however is CJ’s a 23 year old kid in only his 2nd year in the league …not only still learning how to be a QB on this level, but he’s also still learning how to be a pro too. Slowik on the other hand is pushing 40 and been in and around the league for 4-5 years already.

In reality both guys are working with a limb or 2 behind their backs..So while Slowik is hamstrung by what he feels comfortable calling b/c his o-line is trash and his WR depth is depleted and they can’t run the ball, CJ is more hamstrung simply b/c he has to deal with all the same shortcomings Slowik has to deal with but physically IN ADDITION to having to deal with Slowik’s trash as playcalling as well.
There were guys open last game.

But I otherwise agree with your post

It hasn’t been one game. It has been multiple.

One season doesn’t make a career. It’s been a bit off for CJ, but it’s also been off for Slowick, the OL, and the RB & WR injuries.

For those that may want to entertain the idea of trading away CJ b/c you’re dissatisfied with his 2nd year production and growth….what value would Caserio get for a perceived Franchise QB that he’d be bailing out on?

Caserio and Cal need to hit the board, clean off the old plan, and take another approach with the offense by giving CJ a new OC, OL Coach, protection, and weapons to get their Franchise QB healthy in a hurry.

I'm not sure how CJ feels about his performance this year. If asked, I'm pretty sure he would say something like "It's not been good enough," and he'd be right. He's a humble guy, and I like that about him.

His accuracy has been erratic. He's had 5 games this year where he completed less than 60% of his passes and one where he barely hit 60. He's had 2 Big Pass Games (300+ yards) this year compared to 6 last year. 3 of those games last year were over 350 and one of those was over 400. Zero of each this year. YPA is down from 8.2 to 7. His rating is down from 100.8 to 86. Last year, he threw 5 interceptions. This year, he's thrown 12. His receivers drop % is down from 4.4% to 3.8%. Time in the pocket is 2.5 seconds, good for 6th best in the league.

Those are just stats, I understand they don't tell the whole story. The rest of the story is he is missing his targets sometimes by a large margin. He's throwing at receivers' feet or sailing them over their heads. He's throwing to spots that make it more difficult for the receivers to catch them than it needs to be. He's making terrible decisions even when he has time to set and throw.

I've given up on Stroud for this year. It was evident 6 or 7 weeks ago that he had hit a wall; maybe from getting sacked so often early in the season or something else. Whatever it is, he owns it and needs to improve in the offseason if this team is to take the next step. And for the offense, the next step is playing up to the level they were at last year.

You should all be reminded that at this point, receiver wise, we are exactly where we were last year. With Diggs and Dell out, the teams they are going to face will just double team Nico and won’t worry about rest who can’t separate. They’ll stack the box, and Mixon won’t go anywhere. You’ll get more ammo to slam CJ because he can’t find anyone open, and more ammo to slam Slovik for not being “creative”.

For those that singing about Joe Burrow and the year he’s having, well yeah.. Tee Higgins and Jamar Chase are some nice things to have.

We all know how things are going to turn out this season. But we shouldn’t delude ourselves into thinking they have the healthy players left to get it done….. when they don’t. Injuries DO make a difference.

If one season doesn’t make a career, why does he need a new OC?

At least 3 Ones. But I would not trade CJ

Want to go all in on next yr?

Draft Milum at 1-19 (I actually like Booker a little better but it's close)

Trade a 2026 1st for 2-35 and pick Booker.

2-51 pick the best TE available, hopefully one of Loveland/Fannin are there.

3- 83 Matthew Golden WR Texas

4. Cam Skattebo RB Arizona St.

I'm surprised to see so many here apparently ready to cut CJ loose for another QB.

Do any of you want to test the trade waters with him to see what we can get?

FWIW, PFF currently has CJ ranked as the 14th best QB.

I dont see anybody advocating for trading CJ this offseason.

Ok. I'm just sensing a lot of negativity about him.

This season is done. We don't have the OL to compete due to Nick's off-season neglect. Due to injuries, we don't have the weapons needed at WR. It is what it is.

Fortunately, I think Nick can and will rectify his mistake. We'll likely get a better schedule next year and hopefully we'll stay healthier. The future is bright!

Tunsil will be the LT in Houston next season. Fisher will be the RT next season. Patterson will be the starting C next season….maybe.

I want to bring in a veteran Pro Bowl Center to settle the OL, and possesses a strong acumen to see and call the proper protections. The only UFA that fits the profile….Ryan Kelly (Colts).

Sign Kelly and the Texans could slide Patterson to RG to play along side a fellow Golden Domer who he’s familiar with.

Texans could then focus their attention on a LG or sign a veteran to help steady the left side. Texans could do this and really stabilize their OL depth at the same time.

You should send a letter to Nick letting him know how it should be

I gather Kelly will become a free agent this offseson and you don't expect him to resign with the Colts ?
He's 31 which is kinda middle -age for an Olineman.
You think he's that good, or just a solid upgrade over what we have currently ?

After being burned by Britt and watching Shaq Mason get old this season I don’t want to sign an OL over 30.

I can get on board with this. If they were to sign Kelly and draft say Booker, they can get avg play out of Patterson/Scruggs at the other OG spot and I would also draft another guy like Fairchild in the 3rd/4th rd range.

No more than 2 or 3…certainly not enough times for anyone to build a faulty hypothesis on his play being the chief issue.
Twice last game, that's the reason I asked the question.

I'm not building a faulty anything, just asking a legit question because I'm afraid my eyes are telling me he's having a very Carr like season.

Ok, it’s a legit question, and my legit answer would be that you might be taking that bad game and blowing it out of proportion.

Nobody said cut him loose. We're saying he needs to be fixed.

Nick did not neglect the offensive line this past offseason. They’re right around the 5th highest paid offensive line in the league. They just underperformed and coaching hasn’t done them any justice.

What we need to invest in is a better offensive line coach and Offensive coordinator.

I’ve always thought he’d be a solid and respected upgrade over what the Texans have or could draft this season. Kelly is an All Pro veteran who would be the right player, for the now…..and an excellent mentor for a developmental center drafted later or Patterson and Scruggs.

I realize that it was a bad game and probably a result of playing 3 games in 11 days.

Stroud hasn't been playing up to the standards he set last year for most of the season.

Yea, a big drop-off from last season. Fortunately we know how great he can be and it will be up to the Texans brain trust to tweak CJ.
