Chris Kelsay won't give up No. 90 to Mario Williams

daaaaamn GP, you are mad bro. neg rep for being a sensitive sally lol? also, i'm not a loser :(. but c'mon man, don't get your feelings hurt so easily.

as for the topic at hand, this is a non-story, which is why it was pointless in the first place.

oh well, offseason plus hot equals ornery people, myself included. apologize for de-railing this thread.

Do you understand what is happening? It's NOT a non-story. Players routinely get their number, but Mario not only DIDN'T get his own number back...the guy wearing it flat out approached Mario and told him to not even ask for it.

So, uhh, yeah...for the 1,000th time: It's pretty awesome. It just happens that the one guy who had the trend bucked was Mario Williams. LOL. Apparently, not everyone in the NFL is impressed by Mario's hero status. And I find that to be delicious.

You don't seem to care, and so you're approach is to rag me for it. I think you got some stink on your hands while trying to clean up GP. :(

LOL man ... you are WAY out there on a lot of stuff. You have fun with that, though. Go get your psych degree or something, so you can really have fun with it.

I get animated when it comes to people like Mario Williams. As a Texans fan, when he left and pretty much burned all bridges on his way out, I find it to be most awesome that Maria Williams not only didn't get his precious #90...he had the guy who wears #90 tell him "Don't even bother asking for it."

And Maria said "OK." LOL, that's the stuff of awesomeness for me. For the new billionaire Bill to be told to put his hand down and accept an answer of "No" even before being asked for the jersey number. I still chuckle when I think about it.

:texans:

He was a Texan then, he's playing for somebody else now... Times change. I wouldn't call it hate. He's just a guy on a team we have to play this season.

THis is the exact type of BS I'm talking about. Support the guy and act like he is a total bad ass as long as he is here. Argue that he needs to be resigned to where the organization spends all of this money on him and everything, but the minute that it does not happen, than all of a sudden the guy is a jerk, he was overrated, and Buffalo will now have them a horrible signing, and every other previous argument for the guy goes right out the window just like that.

That is not logical, it's not honest, and it damn sure isn't objective. It's just a run of the mill flip flop depending on which direction the wind blows. That's exactly why I refer to a lot of fans on here as homers, because they don't have any real opinions that they stand by. They just spout out whatever seems to be the popular opinion at the time.

Amen.

How did he burn bridges? Did he say something about your Mom that I missed or something?

Precious? Where do you get the idea that it was precious? From the article, I got the impression that it wasn't that big a deal to Mario. He just kind of shrugged and said that's cool. You got some special psychological insight into this?

Seriously? - you have been around here too long for this question. GP looks at something consults his ouiji board, looks into his crystal ball, murders a chicken to consult its entrails, shakes his magic 8 ball, plays solitaire with his tarot cards and then spews forth eight paragraphs of his divination of the intentions of others. That's his gig.

No offense intended to GP, but he is our resident tin foil hat guy. Man has an imagination. Interesting to read though.

Williams only impressed me a few times really while in Houston, despite getting paid all too well and presumed to be a hero, and I do find it humorous that somebody told him to forget about getting his number. I think there is some truth to the idea that he takes plays off (although it's not the main problem, I think) and his quickness off the ball is just not good enough for a 4-3, weak-side rusher.

To give him credit though, he basically shuts down the run on his side of the field, but that's not what a weak-side DE is really for and he was overpaid to be something he just is not (most of the time), which is a weak-side, 4-3 get-to-the-QB-in-a-hurry DE. Far as the 3-4 OLB thing, I think he was headed to be impressive, but so are guys without all the hype (and price-tag)...

What's awesome is that at the end of the day, I'm not trying to win a popularity contest. A lot of people go along with certain others on here JUST to boot lick and sort of co-sign for the sake of feeling like they're on the winning team.

I don't know what's so "tin foil hat" about this whole jersey number business. Let's re-cap:

1. Superstar players usually request their number when they land with a new team. Oh, and so the jersey is "sold" but the money usually goes to a kid's foundation or some do-goodie thing like that. Build someone a home. Send someone to college. Etc.

2. Kelsay? Yeah, he sort of took a proactive strategy by telling Mario. TOLD him. Said, "Look, just want to let you know that this is my number and I've worn it for eons here and stuff...so, uh, the number is not up for grabs.

3. Mario goes along with it. :lion:

Now, tell me where I'm being tin foil hat here...

Someone find me the last time a guy refused AND even went to the length of approaching the guy beforehand to tell him it's not an option. Add to this that he went off to be the toast of Hot Wing City :chili:, made his digs on the Texans in the process, and it's just lip smacking GOOD.

:bravo:

I guess I don't see the conspiracy angle here. :shoot:

You got some special psychological insight into this?

Why does everything have to revolve around a psyche degree??? LOL.

His twitter handle contains 90. He was 90 in college. He was 90 in Houston.

Now he's 94. Gonna' have to get a new twitter handle. :shrugs: Rich Man Problems, I suppose.

I'm consistent. DeMeco has been a gentleman and a scholar, which I expected of him. I expected Mario to be a twirp when he left, and whaddya' know...he was. Dunta was too. Ditto for Carr.

Winston, Brisiel, Dreessen, Allen, DeMeco...you won't see me digging on those guys like I am Mario. Look, I just love the Texans. A lot. For me, it's cathartic to relish the little things that happen to a guy like Mario. Maybe the thing with Kelsay brought him back down to earth for a second, as in "Earth to Mario: You got paid, that's great and all, but you're not the only guy who matters."

Meh. It's football. We root FOR and we root AGAINST. And those who root against MY team??? Off with their heads! It's just good old fashioned sports rhetoric. At the end of the day, dude is rich and I'm not. Dude is an NFL player and I'm not. I'm JAF: Just A Fan. I heckle, I cheer, I support, I jeer. Etc.

Sue me.

He was number 9 in college.

I think the point has been made: Mario was a jerk on his way out, acting like an ass on twitter and making veiled swipes at the Texans in his media interviews, and I'm glad he got a bit of humble pie from Kelsay.

Doesn't really count for anything, just nice to know that somebody told him--in a way--to stand down and fall into line.

Really I couldn't care less about any of this stuff, but Mario is a very rich man at the end of the day. If he is in it for the money like , have claimed you really think he cares about a jersey number?

Even if he's not in it for the money. Choose another jersey and move on. Doesn't really seem like that big of a deal.

Lots of players switch jersey numbers on their career. Hell Mario will probably be on the team longer than Kelsay and he could just get the number when he leaves if he even wants to do that.

I have pie-in-the-sky ideals when it comes to football. I like to think that the guys I root for...they're hungry for the glory as much (or more) as they are for the pay.

We sense that with Cushing. Sense it with Watt. Sense it with Antonio Smith. I think Rick Smith learned from Mario and Amobi that talent alone is not going to get the job done. They have learned it from Jacoby too. They've moved on from that mentality...they're focusing in on Brian Cushing type players.

Brian Cushing marked the beginning of the end for the Mario Williams and Amobi Okoyes of the Texans roster. Travis Johnsons, Dunta Robinsons, anybody who they felt was not focusing on football like they should be.

You can see it in the picks: Cushing, Watt, and even the FA acquisition of Antonio Smith. Shaun Cody. Taking a pass on Glenn Coffee in the draft (whew!). The release of Winston. Adding guys like Crick despite his injuries. Choosing to take fliers on UDFAs rather than wasting picks on those types of "gamble picks." Their screening process has changed.

So you're probably right: Ultimately, it probably DIDN'T matter that much for Mario...whether he got #90 or not. Which, IMO, is the ultimate indictment of the guy. Your number is you. #99 here, Mr. JJ Watt, I bet he has a mind to make sure that people see a #99 jersey and know that's the number of Watt. The jersey is an extension of who you are with a team, with the league, and it's why players fuel their fire when they get let go from a team...they thought they WERE a part of that team. But they aren't anymore.

The jersey aspect I speak of, it's an innate part of the game's fabric. IMO.

No big deal, though, just my two cents on it.

You are right about Jersey numbers for the most part....

But I think when you have to change, you just make due with it the best way you can.
When I played in middle school through high school my number was 77.....

When I got to college there was a senior with the number already. I ended up taking #67 since it was the closest to what I wanted. As soon as that senior left though I claimed my number back...I just didn't feel like me wearing that other number...

So yeah...you are correct...
