Chris Conley, Geogia WR (a sleeper for Billy ?)

Introduction

I didn't have Conley in my top 10 receivers last week, but his performance at the combine in the 40 made me go back and look again. He dominated the combine and as he's coming from a run heavy system, you want to ensure you're evaluating him correctly. Conley made an instant impact at Georgia upon signing in 2011, considered a 3 star prospect by rivals, Conley decided to stay in his home state of Georgia.

Conley is a special person who keeps himself busy. To know Chris Conley the football player is to know only half the story. He's also a film director and screenwriter, athletic administrator and coffee house musician, as well as being an honor student. All of that on top of being a starting wide receiver for a major program in the SEC.

Before the combine, people knew who Chris Conley was. People knew he was talented, people knew he'd be drafted around the middle rounds and people knew he would come in and be one of the hardest working guys on the team. However the combine put his name in lights, to label him as just a "combine workout warrior" would be wrong.

Today at Georgia's Pro Day, according to local CBS-13 Billy was on the scene and had an hour long conversation with the young Georgia receiver.

Well, he was a "sleeper" until you started this thread... on the internet! :foottap:

Bill O'Brien takes in Georgia's pro day, meets with Chris Conley

with him.”

Here's a fun story about Conley, by our Ivan Maisel from last August, in which he describes Conley as "a starting senior flanker on a top-10 team and a college senior, a film director and a screenwriter, a budding athletic administrator and a coffeehouse musician, a Bible-quoting honor student and a superhero-loving, "Star Wars" geek."

That's from the link that PO provided anf it might include bit of a red flag
for Conley ? I dunno, does he have time to fully concentrate on the game with all og those outside interests ? Guess that a lot better than a rap sheet. Maybe just healthy diversions off of the field during down times.

ATHENS — Former Bulldogs wide receiver Chris Conley worked to boost his stock in the upcoming NFL Draft by participating in Georgia Pro Day on Wednesday in Athens, Georgia.

Conley showcased his skill during position drills, running a variety of routes and catching passes from former Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason. The 6-foot, 2-inch wideout from Dallas, Georgia, said his focus at Pro Day was on consistency and backing up his combine performance.

“I had to prove that I can continue to get better,” he said. “Some guys relax after the combine and drop weight or aren’t ready to perform in position drills. I want to show these guys that I’m going to continue to work.”

Conley opted out of the measurement portion of Pro Day, choosing instead to stand on his historic numbers from the NFL combine in February at Lucas Oil Stadium. He was one of five Georgia athletes to receive an invitation and set multiple combine records during his standout performance.

Conley ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds to begin his combine appearance. He then recorded a 45-inch vertical jump, the best ever for a wide receiver and one inch short of Donald Washington’s combine record. Conley set another record for wide receivers and tied the overall combine record with a broad jump of 11 feet, 7 inches.

“He definitely earned himself some money,” Mason said of his teammate’s performance. “He improved his stock. If there’s anyone the world should know about, it’s Chris Conley.”

Prior to his showing in Indianapolis, Conley was largely thought to be a late-round draft pick or undrafted free agent. He was listed as the 37th wide receiver in his draft class. by nfldraftscout.com. He moved into the 21st spot after the combine and is now projected to go in the fourth or fifth round.

Since Georgia’s season ended, Conley and Mason have continued to practice and train together. So far they have worked out for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and have scheduled a session with the Dallas Cowboys for next week.

Representatives from all 32 NFL teams attended Georgia Pro Day, including Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien. Conley said he spoke with O’Brien prior to the event and spent time talking to various scouts after his drills.

During his four seasons with the Bulldogs, Conley had five games with 100 receiving yards and averaged five touchdowns per season.

In his senior year, he led the team with 657 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Conley has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his academic achievements and community involvement. He received the UGA Coaches’ Leadership Award in 2014.

After his position drills, Conley was calm and pleased with Georgia’s overall performance.

“At the end of the day, it’s playing football,” he said. “This is our element, this is our game day.”

Conley said he looks at football as his job and will continue working to show NFL teams that he can compete at a higher level.

“This is our internship,” he said. “This is our work study. This is our job interview.”

Oh yea, the words out. Billy really likes this kid. I dunno, can he get him with the 16th pick in the 3rd round ? I doubt it.

FYI, I think we have the 18th pick in that round. I am not ready to move him up that far just because a coach visited.

You move players up in your mocks for things like coach visits?

His talent is the reason you should move him up. In fact don't be surprised if he goes in the second round because of that talent. The only reason he falls to the third is because of depth at the WR position in this draft.

After his pro day I could see Ray falling to 16 or Dupree being there. If I had to use a 2nd rd pick to go get the pass rusher I would. If Conley/Dorsett/D.Smith falls to 51- below I would use a 3-4th and a 6th to trade up and get the speed WR too.

Then use the 5th/comp picks to add depth at DL/OL/LB. BPA

This is how important I consider filling these positions not only now but for the future. If Rick Smith can fill these 2 holes in this draft I will be happy. It's not like the Texans are going to win the SB next yr so adding a couple of gifted playmakers is the way I would go rather than trying to fill all of the teams needs in 1 draft.

If you take a couple of shots on small school guys like Kyle Emanuel and talented but troubled guys like Dyer in the late rds you may be able to add 3 major contributors in 1 draft. Something the Texans aren't known for. In short give me quality over quantity.

BTW, Gaine isn't finished adding lower level FA talent like Dent/D.Johnson to the roster. So I expect more upgrades in the near future. Witzmann is a guy I look to improve and become a swing OT option.

I am still having difficulty with how you seem to read my posts. I responded to another who indicated our third round may be too late to get him. I said I would not have moved him for a coach's visit. Perhaps I should have said I would not move him at all? I do think it is important in this one scenario that OBrien visited and interviewed him. It confirms my evaluation that Conley is someone we could be interested in but I have him at our first 5th round selection.
