Our Houston Texans football team will square of against the 49ers this sunday.

Many people hope we loose to ensure a number 1 draft pick. I really cant belive that. We wanted football back in Houston so we could root for a win each Sunday, reguardless of the situation we may be in. Please dont say, "oh I just want whats best for the team in the future". Your wrong. A win any week in the NFL is the most important aspect of the game.

A great coach with the New York Jets once said "You play to win the game". I couldn't agree with him more. True Houston Texans fans will be cheering for us to win this game Sunday, as I will be. I still look at this as a pretty big game for our troops.

We have a chance to gain our first road win of this season, obviously a major plus if it would occur.

We should also win this game for well-respected head coach Dom Capers. We credit him for starting our franchise. Think of all the memorble moments we've had with him. We became the first expansion team in the NFL to win our first game as we defeated the hated Dallas Cowboys 19-10. We dunked Dom Capers after the game.

Or how about our second year, where Dom Capers let us go for it on 4th and goal at the 1 versus Jacksonville, where all we needed was a field goal to tie and send it to overtime. He let us go for it, and Carr leaped acorss the goal line and scored, we won. Not to many other coaches would have done that just to get the W.

Oh ya, last year. We're playing Jacksonville with really nothing on the line late in the season. They are playing for a playoff berth. He coached us up hard the week, and we shut them down in their house 27-0. Credit: Dom Capers.

Coach Capers is a class act, very proffesional. I still think we can save his job with a win Sunday. I think he is a good coach.

On to the main subject, a win Sunday would also make us 3-13 instead of
2-14. Now, granted that may not seem like alot. However, to ture and loyal Texans fan it is. Because 3, is more than 2. Thats the difference.

Finally, some logical infusion into this post!

Seriously, I am fine with those of you who are begging for a win this weekend. However, don't dare call those of us who take a longer-term approach and see the benefits of a loss this weekend as "non-fans." No matter how incorrect and short-sighted I think your view is, I don't question your loyalty...

But that is exactly what I am going to say......

I want what's best for the team in the future. I want the Texans to have the #1 pick. That is far more important than a meaningless win against the 49ers.

2-14 or 3-13, no big deal-no big difference.

#1 pick or #5, pick very big deal, very big difference.
 
I will be cheering the Texans on for a victory. The only difference in my opinion the real victory is getting the #1 draft pick which will benefit our team much more in the future than a win against the 49ers in week 17 to put us at 3-13.

Dissenting opinions from the Colts & Seahawks - who rested their starters to prepare for the playoffs...individual week wins be damned!

The Texans already have my loyalty, my PSL $$ and my Season-Ticket $$ - For a New Year's gift, I'd like the 1st pick in the 2006 NFL Draft in return!
 
TATWB - good post, but a few flaws.

Texans wern't the first expansion team to win the opening game as the Vikings did it in 1961.... now, not sure if THEY were the first.

Nice highlights from the 1st three years... what about a highlight from this year? Not as many to pick from, huh? Agree with Capers and the class act and professional - but not as a head coach, if nothing else for the sole purpose of his thought process of the coordinators that he hired.

So, yeah - I'll root for the Texans to win, as I can't help myself when the game starts... but not sure if they'll hold up their end of the deal.

Now not bieng a stats freak, from whatI understqand. Shoudl the Texans lose Sunday they would drop to the 5th pick in the 1st round. But like I said I am not 100% on that either

Here are my 2005 Highlights:

1. Jerome Mathis. No matter how bad the game, you always got a little psyched seeing Mathis waiting for the kick. And by the end of the season, the peeps in the stands were yelling his name. 1a is the play of special teams. It is hard to have the worst win loss record in the league but one of the top special teams units.

2. The No Quit part of this team. You know, it can be total cliche to say that adversity shows character but it really does. The W-L record doesn't show it but there were plenty of games that were really interesting down to the wire, and I think this is a year where a lot of our young players can get better--they played, got experience and will be better prepared to win. Young teams generally don't play well, it is not a surprise that the Texans played so poorly with a difficult early schedule, not being able to get the young players confident, lots of injuries and then the ensuing bad season happens.

As bad as it got, I never saw any quit, and was pretty impressed at the lack of drama on the team. There were a few things said here or there, but nothing huge--they were still acting like a team. Easy to give lip service to teamwork when things are going well, but really hard when things are going nongood. I know it is weird, but I am proud of the way that the team conducted itself during tough times.

With this sort of season, it is completely conceivable that a QB that was getting hit as much as Carr coulda gone Ryan Leaf or Tim Couch and turned into a blubbering, quivering pile of goo. Whatever your opinion on Carr's ability and potential, I think he has conducted himself the best that could be expected given what he went through this season.

For all the embarrassment and the bad moments of this season, I will try to remember it as one where a young team was trying to find itself, and played hard despite the ugliness and cheapshots. I really do think that this is a team of integrity, and I for one, am proud to be a fan of a team who despite the record, really did fight hard all season, and tried to stay together as a team.

Anyhow as for real keys to the game, without making jokes here goes.

1. The 49ers offense is atrocious. Makes ours look good. If the 49ers are smart, they won't abandon the run even if they get stuffed a few times. The 49er pass offense is horrible, and even though our secondary is young, they are getting more used to being out there.

2. Morency/Hollings can be fine behind our line as long as we don't give up on that if have some 3 and out early.

The wind is likely going to be something. Prolly not good for our deep throws and our special teams. I've never been colder in my life than I was at a baseball game back in the day at Candlestick. Swirling winds and cold as heck.

3. Though our special teams is a strength, so is theirs. Given the mishaps on both offenses, field position is going to be more of a premium.

4. No matter what the circumstances and crowd, it is never easy to play an away game.


Sorry if this overly earnest post offends. I really do think that sometimes bad stuff does lead to good stuff--but that you can't ever predict it in advance. Maybe it is a first pick in the draft. Or maybe it is NOT getting the first pick in the draft. Or maybe it is getting young players to learn the hard way that you always have to play down to the 0:00s. The 2005 season makes that a lesson that will never be unlearned for those guys.

Go Texans! Whatever will happen, will happen. :texflag: (hoping for an infusion of some key smart defensive free agents with leadership ability--biggest difference between this year and previous years is the defense).

It was Herm Edwards who is a good coach, but has not yet shown himself to be a great coach. And, BTW, you're right about you play to win, not to draft, and about the "losers excuse" to root for losing. We've got a lot of 49er fans who are pissed because it's virtually impossible for us to get the #1 pick now. Even if we lose.

Anyway, good luck, good hunting and hopefully you'll lose... :)
