Chad Brown - Capers kind of LB available soon?

http://theredzone.org/news/showarticle.asp?ArticleID=2610

He's 35 and injury prone, but Chad Brown who started with PITT knows how to get to the QB. I wonder if it would be worthwhile to give him a look as a vet role player/asst coach? If we could get him cheap enough, his work ethic, leadership and experience would be a great example for Peek and Babin. Probably wait until after the draft to see what we p/u, but something to think about.

I think the Texans are trying to get away from the slow, old players and let the players they have get on the field. I believe Peek is how they want on the field all the time and this year will be his year to prove that he belongs on the field.

Capers said yesterday morning on 610 that Peek will be given every opportunity to win the ROLB spot. It sounded like he really wants to get Peek on the field as much as possible.

That would lead me to believe we are going WR, ILB, or (an actual) DE with the pick. If they go OT, I really hope they trade down first.

I think Chad Brown should go to the Texans. He was a great 3-4 OLB in his days, he will be like the Aaron Glenn of our LB corps, he doesn't necessarily have to start, he would ride the bench, and if someone got injured short term he would come in and not lose a step in that position.

1 yr contract, while we watch Peek and Babin grow into monsters.

I don't think the Texans should go out and get another Charlie Clemons. A vetern to get hurt and ride the bench. I'll take my chances will Peek, Babin, Polk, Chamberlin and ect for OLB.

That first sentence says it all..."He's 35 and injury prone".

A big "thanks but no thanks" to him. Waste of a roster spot.

Can't imagine the Texans wanting him. No.. if Sharper was an upgrade over Brown, and he (Brown) is released because of Jamie Sharper signing ... how would we be going forward by acquiring him?

Brown was released for cap and durability concerns. I still think it's very unlikely that he ends up with the Texans. It looks as though we're getting younger and faster on defense, and those are two things Chad Brown is not.

I wouldn't be against bringing him in with a 1 year contract as depth so he could mentor Babin and Peek...There's no way he'll get anything more than a 1 year contract though...I know we're trying to get younger on D, but I can't see the harm of having a back-up who was an absolute monster for Capers back at the start of his career...

I have to disagree there. Babin is coming into his second year, and his need for a mentor doesn't seem to be as great as it would have been his rookie year. We need our backups, regardless of age, to play well on special teams. I really don't think a guy with durability concerns like Brown would last very long defending kick and punt returns. Charlie Anderson, Peek, Cheatwood, etc. are more suited for those sort of duties. If we grab another OLB in the draft as some have speculated then Brown would be taking up a roster spot that would be better used for a younger guy. Wong is a veteran with experience at playing OLB, and he should be able to help out Babin or Peek with any thing they're seeing out there. But as I said before I don't think it's very likely we pick up Brown. After the draft we'll have a better idea of what positions we need more competition at, and then we can pursue free agents accordingly.

I should have clarified, but I meant that we should only take a shot at Brown if we don;t get someone in the draft, but I hadn't thought of Wong taking a "mentor" role until now...You're right, though, the time to start these discussions is on Sunday night, when we know who's in the fold and have a better idea of who we should make a run at...

I say we grab Chad Brown and let him become a LB assistant coach. He will never suit up, just teach our LBs how to play the game.

If healthy, and when on the field, even at his age he is still a dominating force. He was arguably our best player on the field in our playoff loss last year. We gave him up in a one for three deal....cut Brown, get Sharper, Dyson, and Pathon. I have always admired Brown and hate to see him go, but we got three younger players and cut a good chunk of cap weight for what is looking to already be a spending boom next offseason.

If you could get him cheaply, then by all means go for it. I would love for the 'hawks to resign him after the draft but I doubt he will be available at that time. This is really a boom/bust scenario. He has life left in him, but the last 3 years he has been walking wounded for us, and seems like he hardly played at all. IF someone wanted him as an every down player, it would have to be a low ball contract loaded with incentives. IF he came as a third down specialist, I think the new team would be getting a much better deal.
