Cedric Benson arrested.

Fact, they were in possession. Drug tests have nothing to do with possession and you know it.

(Facts, lol)

The weed was in Harris' shirt pocket & under the passenger front seat of Harris' car.

Brown & Gatewood were sitting in the back seat.

After the two players passed a drug test, the police dropped the charges on them & decided to only go after Harris.

Which would lead to the obligatory "Should the Texans sign Cedric Benson?" threads. :brickwall:

We don't need a slow overated RB even if he is homegrown. Ced should have listened to his mama and played for the Dodgers. Benson seems like he was reading to many of his press clipping from highschool.

sounds like another case of cops overstepping their boundaries and going on some power trip. i had heard of DWB but I guess this is BWB.

why should our citizens be forced to be placed under police custody, driven to shore while handcuffed, and then given a sobriety test onshore for suspision of being intoxicated? other police departments have mobile breathalyzer apparatus that can give a test on the fly. if Travis County claims they can't afford that, I call total bull****.

if Benson was drunk he should be punished but to take peoples rights away on suspision of being drunk before proper tests could be given is wrong. there are no tests that can be run on a boat that can determine whether he has been drinking other than a breathalyzer.

i just can't stand cops that get on some sort of power trip. i respect cops and they deal with a lot of crap but so many of them are complete aholes its just sad. when I am working baseball games I can always tell the guys who are cops. They are the ones who have big mouths, think they own the world, and won't keep their mouth shut.

I hope Benson can prove he wasn't drunk so he can teach these losers a lesson. Just a power trip and I am sure it had nothing to do with a black guy in dreads owning a nice boat and having a party. I practically lived on Lake Travis during college summers and the cops there were generally total pricks and perverts.

I told Cedric to stop riding all those blonds in his car and his boat, now look what happens, the jealous cops sprayed mace in his face and he wasn't handcuffed or under arrest. Leave those blonds alone and stay in chicago and work out. Honeymoon ,I am pretty sure those cops knew who he was and they may even be aggies? lol I believe that they are probably pricks on the lake. They are envious of the people they are paid to protect.

I get the feeling that you are communicating through some type of wormhole, transmitting from 1923. Once again proving that your surreality is most likely fueled with moonshine and your quasi-inebriated rants served up by a shouldered parrot bought at Pirates R Us.

There are many lakes around Austin. 6th street is not a haven for junkies, but rather a haven for tourists and college kids.

Perls befor swine. If you don't know what it is, don't pick it off the ground and put it in your mouth.

I knew the bears traded the wrong back the minute they did it. CB is worthless now.

Benson is not worthless. Though I am not a big fan of his, this is the day of dual or triple threat backfield. Benson is not going anywhere, he just doesn't have to be the man like the bears wanted him to be.

He is not an everydown back and he is not a change of pace back so what good is easy? I guess he could be the 5 carry guy to give a breather to the strater and the change of pace back but at his salary I would rather cut his ass and sign Rhodes.

I think Forte is the best choice for the Bears and Peterson and Benson splitting 20 carries a game. If I am the bears and can't find a trade partner I keep him and he becomes high priced depth. I doubt they make it thru the season without a RB or two out injured.

am i the only one who thinks this sounds alot like the fred weary incident last year?

I've thought the same...but as I stated, I don't like cops...here is another report of someone backing him

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8108552?MSNHPHMA

A 22-year-old woman who was a passenger on Cedric Benson's boat backs his story of police abuse, saying she called her father and asked him to call 911 for help, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

Benson, a running back for the Chicago Bears, believes officers used excessive force against him and says he'll fight charges he operated a boat while intoxicated and resisted arrest on a Texas lake over the weekend.

Elizabeth Cartwright, a senior at the University of Texas, says she was on the boat with Benson when it was stopped. Shortly after, she told the Tribune, things got out of hand.

"I called my dad and told him, 'Call 911, my black friend is getting beaten up by police on Lake Travis.'"

She went on to say that by that point, Benson was out of sight on the officers' boat, but that she could still hear him.

Cartwright also told the paper that Benson wasn't drunk and had only consumed two drinks during the trip and that her fiancé has dozens of photos that help back up her claims.

She also estimates that she has been on Benson's boat six times in the past year and that it's been stopped for a random safety check each time.

Police say Benson was operating the boat with 15 passengers when a Lower Colorado River Authority officer stopped him for a random safety inspection. He failed a field sobriety test on the officer's boat and was uncooperative when the officer tried to take him ashore, the authority said.

Benson argued whether he would go to land for a follow-up field sobriety test and refused to put on a life jacket, and the officer had to use pepper spray to subdue him, the authority said. He refused to leave the officer's boat and had to be dragged to a car to be taken to the Travis County jail, the authority said.

I've been on Lake Travis at least 300 times in my life. Never have I been randomly searched.

Benson has been on the lake six times this year, and been "randomly" searched six times...

Clearly profiling at its best.

What is the field sobriety test while on a boat?

From what I've heard, they are either supposed to administer a breathalyzer on the boat or a field sobriety test on land.

I don't think there are other options.

I would imagine that a completely sober person might have trouble completing a field sobriety test on a rocking boat.

Good point.

Heck, I'm willing to bet I couldn't pass one if I were sober, on a smooth tennis court surface and had had an off-season training program on sobriety tests. :gun:

Don't laugh, but since it's that slow sports time of the year, I've been watching shows like 'Party Heat' (think COPS on the water). Obviously, tests involving balance would do no good on the water, but they actually do give some tests such as the old "ABC's". They see how the person performs those 'mental tests' before asking them to take a breathalizer test. As is the case with automobile stops, if the person refuses the breathalizer, they can be hauled off under 'suspicion'.

Sounds more like a porno to me.

I've been deep sea fishing many times. We're out on the water for at least 6-8 hours at a time. Afterwards I always have a severe case of "sealegs".

So maybe Benson could use that as a reason he failed the test. I know I'd fail it (see above post) due to sealegs. :)

*ahem* Well a lot of the show(s) consist of Spring Break at places like Lake Havasu.... meaning scantily clad women. But seriously, I watch it for the educational value.....

:spit: *I couldn't even type that with a straigh face*

Channel 246 Tru TV...."It's not reality TV, it's Actuality", Monday nights around 7:00(ish)???

Update:
Party Heat at 7:00
Beach Patrol at 8:00 and 8:30.

Last week's Party Heat was from Padre.

"Benson, who now plays for the Chicago Bears, was pepper sprayed and had to be carried from shore to a vehicle for transportation to the Travis County Jail Saturday night, the affidavit said. Both charges against him are class B misdemeanors punishable by up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine.

Benson was released Sunday on a $14,500 bond. He declined immediate comment when contacted by the Statesman Sunday night.

Benson - according to arresting officer Leonard Snyder's affidavit - was the person operating a 30-foot motor boat with 12 to 15 occupants in Devil's Cove Saturday when Snyder decided to conduct a water safety inspection, a random inspection that lake authorities can conduct to determine anything from whether there are enough life jackets on board to monitoring the sobriety of a water craft operator.

According to the affidavit, Snyder noticed that Benson showed signs of intoxication, including the strong odor of alcohol and bloodshot eyes. Snyder reported that Benson failed a vision test, had slurred speech, did not complete the finger count test - in which he was asked to touch his fingers to his thumb and count - and could not recite the alphabet."

Hell Benson MAY BE innocent. This isn't a fair field sobriety test. I don't know any former UT Football players--drunk or sober-- that can recite the alphabet.

The police officer fails to mention why Benson has been stopped 6 times with in the last year for safety inspections. Hell in all myadult life of boating I have only been stopped once. Now granted I do not go out every weekend but still. getting inspected that many times is BS.

The only person I've read claiming Benson has been stopped six times is his friend Elizabeth Cartwright, a senior at the University of Texas.

We all know that friends never lie to cover for their friends.:sarcasm:

Cartwright claims Benson 'did nothing aggressive until after he was pepper sprayed, when he started screaming for his mother."

Screaming for his mother?

She went on to say that by that point, Benson was out of sight on the officers' boat, but that she could still hear him.

Out of sight but could still hear him?

I am no defender of our 'civil servants in uniform':sarcasm:
but I think the truth of this story has yet to be fully disclosed.

edit

Read the story again.

Cartwright also told the paper that Benson wasn't drunk and had only consumed two drinks during the trip and that her fiancé has dozens of photos that help back up her claims.

Dozens of photos to prove he only had two drinks?

If you read my previous post I made fun of him for calling for his mommy and I also said the truth lies somewhere in between, but if they did stop him 6 times there should be a record of it and you would think they would come out pretty quickly to say that bit of info is total BS. This has the potintial of being a public relations nightmare for the patrol units.

As far as photos go they are most likely time stamped and date stamped so it could possibly be true at documenting the events of the day.

There are a lot of holes in everyones story.

Party Heat is awesome. Lake Havasu is a freaking party.

I don't watch it religiously but if I am channel flippin' and its on, I'll stick around and see some dbags getting in trouble with johnny law. there was one dude who blew like 2.9 and tried to act like he wasn't drunk

As you say, it does have the potential of being a nightmare for the patrol unit. I am just not ready to believe everything I hear....from either side.

Benson will have the opportunity to "confront his accusers" at his hearing. I would....wouldn't you?

If he chooses not to appear then my opinion (worthless to all but me) will be that Benson feels his position is tenuous at best.

I wonder if the patrol boats have the same video cameras as patrol cars?

See HOU-TEX, I'm not the only one. It's great programming.... :)

***************

I do remember the one with the guy blowing a .29. The cop(s) essentially told him he should be dead or near dead... Some of the 'cat fights' are awesome too.

I am not sure how many of y'all have been to Devil's Cove on Lake Travis, but it is friggin crazy. Supposedlly this is where the boat was.

Bottom line is..young black man probably with nice boat and probably a few nice white women on that boat. Racial profiling on the water. Its not really funny but I did chuckle at the white female friend calling her dad to call "911". Wasn't it 911 responders that were causing the problem. This has Fred Weary written all over it and I doubt the truth will ever come out from Law enforcement side until the end. This is still....AMERICA..

Here's a pic of Benson's party boat, on the day of the arrest.

Exaclty.... A couple of those girls look like they would have a hard producing ID that says they're 21...

Also, I do not own a boat, but I have been boating several times and I have a hard time believing that boat is certified for 14 people.

You forgot to count the person taking the photo, that would be 15 people.

I do not pretend to know boating rules and certifications, but I do know Devil's Cove. Just because there are 15 people in a tied up boat in Devil's Cove does not mean that 15 folks went out on his boat. There will be easily 50 boats tied up together with folks "jumping" from boat to boat. I could imagine that word got around quick Benson was there and folks wanted to come over and hang.

However, I would think that you must have X amount of life preservers when X amount of people are on your boat regardless of being tied up or docked. Once again I do not know, but still would like to know if there are cameras on police boats.

Moreover, the rules are extremely lax out there.

Benson is immature spoiled brat and not that good a running back. The worst part of this is he is better than any running backs we have. Why don't we ever try and get a good one (and I don't mean an overpriced has-been)?

Are you kidding? Benson hasn't shown to be anything in the NFL. Behind the same line that Thomas Jones more or less dominated with, Benson could only muster 3.4 YPC. He's a power back that doesn't run with much power. What "good" RB would you have wanted? If you want a starting RB who won't be overpriced, you need to draft one. So far, under the new regime, we have passed on Reggie Bush and Rashard Mendenhall, who were considered to be "good" RBs. One is basically a bust and the other will be a complimentary back to Willie Parker, depending on how he bounces back from injury. Give Slaton a chance before you say "we (n)ever try and get a good one". He has the makings of being a "good one" and should quickly win over the "we need a home run threat" fans.

My Mother in Law has a house..lives.. right off Lake Austin so we are out there alot and all of the coves there are good for just watching ....things.:)
