Casserly's new/modified role?

Whereas previously Casserly was, according to the Texans, pretty much in charge of the draft and selecting players, Mr. McNair recently said that Casserly's new role will be "acquiring the players that Kubiak wants".

This could mean two things:

(a) Kubiak says to Casserly "go get me this specific player", OR

(b) Kubiak says to Casserly "go get me a good pass-rushing LB" or "go get me a top-level TE".

Option (a) is much more palatable to me, as (b) still leaves Casserly with too much decision-making power on player personnel. The more specific Kubiak is the better.

Thoughts?

My thought is, the guy shouldn't even have a job. NONE of those scenarios are palatable to me. You said Casserly's new job is "acquiring the players that Kubiak wants". Isn't that what he has been doing all along? For all those busted picks he has commented that he only drafted who the coaches wanted. If that is all he is doing then make the coach the GM and get rid of his snobby ****.

And with option (a). Who's to say that Capers didn't tell him to "get me an outstanding cornerback." last season? "Sure Dom, there is this guy named "Pat Buchanan" that can be had. We have to give up a lot, however, from what I have seen (4 game tapes only), he should be worth the farm."

Two of the top 3 most often cited misuses of draft picks, Babin, Buchanon and Hollings are reported to involve Casserly being told to go get a specific player the coaches said they wanted. That left Casserly negotiating the price to make his coaches happy. Be careful what you wish for.
 
i agree, leave it to casserly to screw things up. im scared, even with all these wonderful prospects, that ole Carley will find a way to blow it. as long as he's on the Texans payroll there's always goosebumps that creep up on me when the newspaper talks about potential trades or picks.

Good point, and here is a Redskin's fans take on Casserly and his drafting style:

The problem with Casserly is that he doesn't have a spine. His research and knowledge on players, whether college or pro, is unmatched by most, if not all, executives. But, he allows people to speak over him, and he won't stand up for himself. The same thing happened in Washington after Beatherd left, and the same thing is happening now. Unless Casserly can grow a spine and stick up for himself, it might be best for him to be replaced by Reeves.

In Washington, it was not his decision to draft Heath Shulder. It wasn't his decision to draft Desmond Howard. It was his decision to draft Gus Frerotte though, a great find in the 7th round. He lets people walk over him. He was much better with Bobby Beatherd, who had the GM swagger, the "I am better than you" aurora around him. He took Casserly's word on every players ability and talent, and basically, when Beatherd was the GM, Casserly was drafting. When Beatherd left, it basically turned into the coach saying he wanted someone, and Casserly folding. Mathis and Davis are traditional Casserly picks though. If he stood up to Capers, he'd definately found you guys more like them.

Not arguing with this point, but I am curious. I have seen this referenced before, and wondered where the 4 game tape info originated.
Is there a specific source that I could read? It seems to me that if a guy had only reviewed 4 game tapes before making a trade like that. he should keep that little fact to himself.
 
I think Cass will do much better without Capers as HC. I also think the lack of spine (and not lack of knowledge) problem is probably the real truth. I think McNair knows it too and that's why Cass is still there--he has a brain, McNair just wants him to start using it. The reason he always does better in the later rounds is because the coaches don't give him their opinions in the later rounds, which he feels that he MUST comply with when he really doesn't have to.

McNair: So, you wanna trade for this guy, huh? Give up this guy and those picks for him?

Cass: Yeah, that's what we're looking at.

McNair: Charlie, was this your idea?

Cass: Well, no, (HC) wants him. He's pretty high on the kid.

NcNair: Charlie, what do you really think of him? I mean, REALLY think of him.

Cass: ........................?

McNair: Well?

Cass: Well, I kinda think he's crap, sir, but (HC) wants him and they won't give him up unless I give up the farm. idonno:

McNair: Jesus, Charlie!!!
 
I think some combination of a) and b) has occurred in the past and will continue to occur. It varies by the specific draft pick you are talking about.
 
You are all undervaluing Casserly greatly. SHAME on your family!

It was a statement made by Bob McNair to the Houston Chronicle at the end of the season (prior to firing Capers).

Not really sure why he kept Casserly after that little revelation, but he's the owner.
 
How many here second the motion to make Dan Reeves the new GM? Why Not! That would be an incredible move at this point and would compliment our new staff very well, don't you think?

I guess it is not to be. I can live with Charley getting Kubiak's players if I have to (choice B).

Cass is an asset due to his knowledge of players and his contacts on the ground. This is Kubiak's team now with Reeves and Sherman in the shadows. With this triumvirate Cass is a great tool for them to have at their disposal for the remainder of the off season.

Well were picks like AJ, D-Rob, DC, etc.: were those no-brainer picks, or should we credit those to Cass? DD was a nice find too, but I think that pick was kind of stumbled upon.

Don't forget the basic rule: negative=member of the Texans (player, coach, front office) and positive=luck :)
