On taking Mario Williams over Reggie Bush and Vince Young:
"We think you have to start building a championship defense first."

Then why didn't you take Peppers you contradicting moron?

What a terrible GM. Worst EVER. Period.

Keep looking down the field through that toilet paper roll Carr. Keep getting your *** knocked down Babin. Keep doing nothing T-Johnson.

How does a billionaire let a moron run his company? He's cheap. Cares more about money than winning. Too bad he just commited franchise suicide.

Worst ever? Not a chance. Not even the worst in the NFL right now. That goes to Matt Millen.

How can you call it "franchise suicide" when the season hasn't started? What if Mario Williams turns into an All-Pro DE? What if the Texans go 8-8 next season? If you were a Texans fan before this, you were probably excited about the Texans signing Flanagan, Walter, Cowart, Weaver, Moulds, and Putzier. Does this one move upset you that much?

Get some brains.

Right. He totally did this because he wanted to pay 49.5M for a player, not 54M. Penny pinching bastard.

The comparison was Williams vs. Bush. Nowhere in the question was Carr vs. Peppers mentioned. Different times, different picks. Doesn't sound like franchise suicide to me -- unless you live and die by fantasy football.

I'm sure Kubiak had more to say about it than anybody. This makes me like him even more because obviously he took the road where he knew he would be criticized. He could have taken Reggie and made everybody happy but realized having Super Mario was more important. Reggie isn't the only good RB out there and good backs are a LOT easier to come by. You can get them with 2nd round picks but even those are more valuable as was the case with Alexander and James last year. I like it I never thought Bush was the prudent move.

Another Casserly quote-ish piece from ESPN News. This was from an ESPN reporter - can't remember her name.

Anyway, Casserly told her that during the Bush/Williams discussion, Kubiak reminded him that the Texans aren't going to outgun Peyton Manning and the Colts' offense.

I think expectations have become a little too high. The draft is supposed to be about the future.

Cass... McNair... Listen up... Your paychecks are our bills. There is no conceivable way you could let me down like this. In 05' I cheered when you loss. I agonized when you won. For one year I let myself be a sellout. One year. I hoped that we could build something for our city, our team. Whether it was Reggie or Vince... Offense builds fans, defense wins games, yeah,... yeah,. You lost a fan for the next four years. While your defense helps to lose games by a smaller margin, your offense will be the same last ranked offense in the NFL and my money will stay in my pocket. Goooo Super Mario, good luck, and I hope Vince and Reggie school you for the next 10 years. McNair, go have lunch with Ken Lay on me... or better yet, Houston a-Holes!

If it was all about money, Mr. McNair would have picked Young because the marketing dividends would have been HUGE (and he wouldn't have shelled out that bonus to Carr, either).

Our owner wants to win, and it is a well known football lesson that defense wins championships. This pick is a step in that direction. It's about long-term success instead of short term dividends.

He didn't commit "franchise suicide". The renewal rate for season tickets is 95%. Most real Texans fans are in this for the long haul.

Defense does win championships but you must have somewhat of an offense. You must be able to move the football and score a touchdown by the offense. In this case our defense and offense will win..the champions of the number one pick for 2007. Owner is an idiot.

You may be right....maybe we won't beat the Colts this year. But think about it.....we're going to be better on defense and that's how you beat good offensive teams. Offense sells tickets, defense.....well I'm sure you know the rest.

If we do it will have as much (if not more) to do with what they've lost as what we've gained.

A major idiot. How can you win a championship with your QB on his a**?

Everyone is talking about the texans havnt done anything for there offense and our offense is still so bad..blah blah blah, whine whine whine. the texans did the most impotant thing they could for there offense and got an offensive minded coach. For the last two years the texans have been trying to immitate the broncos blocking scheme, what better way to do it then to get the guy who has been running it the last 10 years. Lets just keep in mind that kubiak has made many running backs great, and if he thinks davis is good enough, then i trust him. And look what he did with jake the snake. Didnt everyone think he was bust... A good coach is so much more important than a good player. capers was a conservative coach with no offensive sence. And ok if that isnt enough, im gonna throw in the fact that our offensive line coach is a high quality head coach. I say lets go Super Mario...knock some heads off.

This is true. But remember, Trent Dilfer is a Superbowl Champion quarterback. Think about that for a second... :hmmm:

Like erasethevirus said, getting rid of Capers and giving an offensive mind like Kubiak the job is the biggest step in the right direction. We've already seen some major changes in our offense, and we still have the rest of the draft to go.

Sure, we've got BIG questions (and expectations), but let's not write off our team before they even play a game.

Tony Banks was the QB for the Ravens also.

We shouldn't judge a team that hasn't even finished the offseason yet. Besides, only God can judge.:)

I think Gary Kubiak believes (and rightfully so), that he can instill an offensive system in which the running game will thrive, almost regardless of who the HB is.

Terrell Davis (6th Rd. Pick):
1995 - 1117 yds, 4.7 YPC, 7 TD, Den ranks 5th in NFL in rushing yards
1996 - 1538 yds, 4.5 YPC, 13 TD, Den ranks 1st in NFL in rushing yards
1997 - 1750 yds, 4.7 YPC, 15 TD, Den ranks 4th in NFL in rushing yards
1998 - 2008 yds, 5.1 YPC, 21 TD, Den ranks 2nd in NFL in rushing yards

Olandis Gary (4th Rd Draft Pick)
1999 - 1159 yds, 4.2 YPC, 7 TD, Den ranks 12th in NFL in rushing yards

Mike Anderson (6th Rd Draft Pick)
2000 - 1487 yds, 5.0 YPC, 15 TD, Den ranks 2nd in NFL in rushing yards

In 2001, these 3 HBs combined for 1600+ yards and Den ranks 10th in NFL in rushing yards

Clinton Portis (2nd Rd Draft Pick)
2002 - 1508 yds, 5.5 YPC, 15 TD, Den ranks 5th in NFL in rushing yards
2003 - 1591 yds, 5.5 YPC, 14 TD, Den ranks 2nd in NFL in rushing yards

Reuben Droughns (3rd Rd Draft Pick)
2004 - 1240 yds, 4.5 YPC, 6 TD, Den ranks 4th in NFL in rushing yards

And, last season Mike Anderson and Tatum Bell (2nd Rd draft pick) combined for 1935 yds, 4.5 YPC, 20 TDs, Den ranks 2nd in NFL in rushing yards.

I think it's reasonable to assume that Kubiak is confident that the Texans running game will thrive and won't require Bush to do it. None of the above mentioned HBs were 1st rounders, and certainly not considered to be "possibly the best HB prospect in decades!!." Furthermore, those that left Kubiak's system for a different team suffered significant statistical dropoffs. Portis went from 5.5 YPC and 29 TDs in 2 seasons with Denver to 4.1 YPC and 16 TDs in Washington.

Obviously, drafting Reggie Bush #1 overall would be a poor decision for a team that will (assumeably) be a perennial top 5 rushing team anyway. Let's just hope that Kubiak's system has similar success in Houston.
