Carr calling plays in first half? why?

Wolf

100% Texan
Was this a Dan Reeves thing to see what we have and experimented.. I didn't get to see the game, but we put 24 points on the board in the first half with Carr calling the plays and second half he didn't call the plays (ala Houston chronicle http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3533916.html
now was that a suggestion from Dan also to see how our coaches adjust with the playcalling ..was this an evaluation of both coaches and Carr or was this Capers decision to let Carr do this.. i am just curious on why it took so long to evaluate

This was the first pass of the game that DC made that was beyond the LOS, 5 yards:
1-10-HOU37 (10:11) D.Carr pass to D.Morgan ran ob at HST 46 for 9 yards (D.Macklin). (4 yards after catch.)

Pretty sad when you have zero confidence in yourself and your line. Pretty sad when a team pays you 5.5 million dollars to do this. Pretty sad when fans say that Vince Young can't or is not ready to play in the NFL when you have a guy like this collecting a check.

But hey, maybe McNair offered DC some ice cream if they won.

Let's see, the team moves the ball up and down the field after that first drive with Carr calling the plays. Score a team record for points in a quarter. Second half, Pendry calls the plays....the offense boggs down. I think the problem of the offensive playing calling is what we have suspected all along; the playcalling by the coaches. This tells me David Carr has a good understanding of the offense IF the coaches give him freedom.

And Carr understood properly that our back up running back was a better option than his throwing downfield. I am all for signing Carr up as OC and getting rid of Pendry for the remaning of the year.

Carr certainly seems to understand his players better than Pendry. I asked this question yesterday and I'm going to try again. Since they did so well under Carr - why did Pendry take back the play calling during the second half? That makes absolutely no sense.:brickwall

To try and lose the game. It was getting away from them by half-time and they had to do something.. so they had the coaches make the calls and threw repeatedly to Bradford in an attempt but they couldn't control the clock and ran out of time..

Bad coaches don't know they're bad coaches maybe?

I think (100% Pure Opinion follows) Pendry came here to be our OC and it took him a year to gum up the works enough to get Palmer thrown under the bus. Now he must appear to be part of the solution to the mess Palmer supposedly caused.

I do not think you are way off. If McNair truly has a Carr crush, lets sit Carr have him call the plays and let Ragone dink and dunk all day. Heck Ragone can only get this type of live game experience, in a dink and dunk offense, on the field or at a local coffee shop.

David, smell the glove is here. Hello Janine. Can't beat Tap.

Whether you like Carr or don't (And I've thrown a few shots at him myself) you can't argue the fact that the first half was played with an extremely efficient offense.

Now, that is another question I've been asking after every game. Why the devil don't they let Mathis play anything besides punt/kickoff returns? Almost every week Capers says Mathis is practicing at WR and is doing well. But do we ever see Mathis in the lineup? Once, last week and then we get Bradford. Bradford, like Riley before him, needs to find a day job. I've come to the decision that the Capers/Pendry philosophy is really, "Don't do anything to win - just play not to lose by more than 10 points." It is like they are working against us.

I think my favorite part out of the whole game was us going for it on 4th down in the first drive. Granted, we didn't get it but I liked that call.

Agreed, but I would have liked it better if we had put in our 4th and 1 player package.

Not looking for a fight, but I thought it was a bad call. Our defense arguably opened the game with their best defesive series all year, two sacks, and we hand over the momentum to them back at midfield.

Notice how Carr threw screens only to AJ in the first half. Pendry called for screens to Bradford.. nuff said

The simple truth is that the coaching staff, for better or worse, believe that Carr is the franchise QB round these parts, and since they have no intention of playing Ragone or Banks, there is no point in not getting Carr all the gametime experience he can get, even if it is, in the eyes of some, "garbage time."

As for Carr calling the plays, I say, it's about damned time. He even went deep a couple times, and while he didn't complete it, I like the philosophy. I still don't understand how, taking it back to our first W of the year against Cleveland when he hit Mathis on that deep ball ... it absolutely bamboozles me how we have run maybe five of those routes since then. It's not like Mathis still can't beat these DB's we go against.

As I say, we must not watch film of ourselves or our opponents.

Becuase that is about how many times this season Carr has had time to drop back and let a WR get down the field.

Carr managed the game to a victory, just like if he had led the team to a loss. You can't have it both ways. If Carr had not done a good job this game then wouldn't he be held accountable? Sure he would. You would have torched Carr for calling so many "running" plays or not throwing downfield. Way to play the fence. Fact still remains, a David Carr led offense scored many points and gave us a victory....that is of course if you want to give Carr all the blame all the time. But take a step back and notice that this is a team game with both running and passing and you need a QB to be in charge. Our defense needs to create turnovers and offense needs to not turnover the ball. The whole did played as a team yesterday.

I have commended him for managing the team. I just feel that is an indictment upon his own ability and the money we pay for it.

ok lets say we don't pick up Carr's option, what would you want to happen?

Let Carr and his agent go out and see what the market is willing to pay for him. In good faith we bump it 10-15 points above market value and give him heavy incentives that would escalate to what the option would have looked like.

ok so he tests the market and Oakland or Arizona pick him up, Oakland would probably do it because they shell out money to Free Agent all the time. Then what is your move Kaiser Kasserly?

Yup, especially if Carr sticks up his middle finger at ANY offer you bring him after not picking up the option.

Then we go out and find a journeyman and take the cap goodness to fill necessary holes on the Oline, TE and defense. Couple this with a new staff, GM and infusion of our rookies and FA's we will have a new attitude ala the Dolphins.

Carr has a big option, but it's not enormous. The cap savings wouldn't have that much of an impact considering the increase in the salary cap next year. We need better FA, the ones we've brought in over the years havn't been play makers.

Could be Oakland, Arizona, NY Jets, Baltimore, New Orleans, Detroit, or the Cowgirls who would try to pick him up. And yes, I said the Cowgirls, I don't see Bledsoe returning to Dallas next season.

all i know is that peyton manning does the PC for his offense, and just look at em go...

granted they werent that great yesterday, but still....theyre without a doubt the most complete offense in the NFL.

as far as the o-line is concerned, whats the deal?? is it a lack of strength and talent, or is it the schemes that cause us to suck so bad at o-line??

(i think it may be schemes or a lack of understanding of the schemes....[blame pendry])

I wish we hadn't made it so obvious that we were running up the middle with Wells, we should have had a more open formation with more WRs and let Carr roll out and either throw or run it himself. Anyways back to the topic, I think they were letting Carr call some plays to see how he handles it and see if they can start giving him more freedom in the offense, and I doubt Dan Reeves had much, if anything, to do with that.

This most definitely was influenced by Reeves. He suggested they let Carr make more of the calls at the line.

Well, this is the same staff who didn't give Mathis any WR time for weeks - RIGHT AFTER he scored a big touchdown.

If there is a method to their madness, I don't have a clue what it is.

Let me see if I understand what you have just written.

We have holes on the O line, we have no TE, we need a new staff and GM, an infusion of our rookies and FA's and a new attitude. Does that cover it?
Which rookies are you wanting to infuse? ...wide receivers....running backs..TE...Olinemen ? ...

But yet you expect an all pro performance from Carr. :brickwall

Carr is not our problem.

I simply am not a believer in having the largest contract on the team tied up in a QB or a RB. Whether the name on the back is Carr or Sizzlelips.

SOMEONE is bound to have the largest contract and as a skill position he deserves that than most other players; however he does need improvement and this offseason (maybe he takes a pay cut) we can get a good offensive guru and a real QB coach.

i think when carr managed the 1st half he was executing what him and palmer CHANGED this offseason. im glad the line held up as it did for the most part, but he still doesnt trust them enough. this was the offense that was supposed to be implemented this whole season. nevermind the ypc but he started off at 7-7 in something he was very comfortable with. most definatly he knows this offense better than pendry.

but the 8 million dollar question is will this coaching staff EVER let him call the plays for a whole game? (1st half was the most freedom hes had in his career)

Carr should be given the chance to call the plays against a real defense this week. He did well against Arizona, I want to know if it was because Arizona has no defense, or if Carr is good at reading the D.

Can we start using good Carr bites now?

"The Carr is in overdrive!"
"The training wheels are off the Carr."
"The Carr drove downfield in massive traffic and scored!"

this is exactly why we need gary kubiak here...get an offensive minded coach that knows how to get the most out of his QB and settle this carr down...look at what he's done with jake the snake plummer this year...hire kubiak either as the HC or as the OC...by the way...kubiak is a dan reeves guy

I am interested in knowing exactly how much latitude David had in the play calling. Did David actually call the plays? All the plays? Some of the plays? Or, was he just given more latitude at the line of scrimage for audibles?

It sounded like ALL the plays.

I liked the call to go for it, not the actual play called. I think I should've said the decision to go for it. I believe Jerek and Kaiser had stated before that they didn't like the decision to go for it and I understand that from a strategic standpoint but that decision sparked a little excitement in me that they were actually trying to make something happen for once instead of going through the motions. Maybe it wasn't the right place or time but they took a shot that they weren't expected to take.

I think your posts are pretty insightful. Now you're the comedian of 2005. That is funny.:)

Letting David Carr call the plays in the first half is something that he should have been doing all season. I know he's not the offensive coordinator, but by him calling alot of the plays out on the field, it builds his confidence as the leader on the field, and maybe he wouldn't have been sacked as much.
Good job, Carr.

I do not disagree with that at all, as I called for it early on in the year.

I don't know why they didn't do it sooner to see what Carr has.

All Pendry did was call the formation right?
