Capers wants a "big pounder" like Bettis

In Richard Justice's column, Capers drops a hint, IMO.

His ultimate role with the Texans might be less than it is now.

Their offseason wish list could include a larger, more punishing running back, but unless they find another Fred Taylor or Shaun Alexander, Davis will be in the mix.

"The ideal thing would be to have Domanick and a big pounder," Capers said.

He likes the way the Pittsburgh Steelers alternate Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis. He likes how they complement each another and wear down defenses.

I don't know what free agents are on the market this offseason, but it seems like a big RB could be a focus in the 1st or 2nd round. I don't know if the 2 RBs from Auburn fit the bill.
 
we do need a big punishing back. Ronnie Brown isnt Staley or Bus size, but he is tall and at 220-225 pounds.. he could possibly play the role of a big back.

I dunno.. might be something to address through free agency.. or take a chance on a fullback or something.

Oh baby! This kid is big, strong, very fast, powerful and the talent he shows on film is very scary. Talk about licking your chops! He has an excellent burst in the hole and breakaway speed to take it to the house. He has good leg strength and loves the big play. He has good hands out of the backfield and is a bear to bring down once he’s in the defensive backfield.

Needs to Improve
Kay-Jay played baseball and now lacks the football instincts and understanding of teamwork. He is 26 years old and how well he handles injuries is a concern.

Bottom Line
My prediction for this player is that when he goes to the combine, he will shoot up the draft boards because he will stand out athletically above the other RB’s in this draft. He might be the fastest RB in this draft. I feel that his speed and size will overcome the questions about his age. Since the average back in the NFL lasts only about 4 to 6 years, add free agency and the life of a head coach to this equation and Kay-Jay’s speed and size alone will make him a pick that can impact quickly in certain situations and get fans very excited. You see, sometimes you don’t need to worry about age or instincts if a player can get on the field and impact in some capacity in his first year. You have to feel that with Kay-Jay’s pure athletic talent alone, he will impact on third downs and special teams. Kay-Jay played baseball for six years and did not make it. That shows me that he wants to be a star and make more money than he did in the minors. I think that if you don’t overwhelm this kid with a lot of responsibility and just put him in situations where his athletic abilities and speed will shine, you can have yourself an impact player in his first year. I can see a team at the end of the first round jumping all over this kid because he has the abilities to impact without a lot of reps. He is a bit of a boom or bust player, but with no off field problems, he is well worth the chance.

I dont like the way that report makes Kay Jay sound. Not a team player? dont give him too much responsibility? let someone else have him.. we are looking for a very important peice of our offense.. we need someone who is most DEFINATLY a team player and can handle ALOT of responsibility

Jacobs may be something really great.. and may be available in day 2 as well.
 
LaMont Jorden 5-10 230 lbs. Free Agent- Jets. He is only 26 and finishing his 4th year, knows what it takes to play in the NFL, under utilized as Curtis Martins back-up. Without breaking the bank would give the Texans a solid 1-2 punch. Ready to contribute now just needs an opportunity. Grab a big project back if you like on the 2nd day to develop for the future, however the Texans timeline for success is fast approaching.

Yeah, Brown isnt Staley or Bus but he runs physically and never goes down on the first hit...
 
If Capers wants a pounder, then Louisville RB E. Shelton would be worth a 2nd round pick, if he declares. Brandon Jacobs or KayJay Harris would be good picks in the third.Clarret might be worth a 6th rounder
 
well we had a real shot at that bruising back last year but we traded picks to tennessee to get babin...the man i'm talking about is the guy we just played greg jones...that's your bruising back...now harris is a solid runner when he's not injuried but honestly lamont jordon is the best bet as of right now...i'm sure ron dayne is also worth a look if he can keep his weight under control

The only reason he will fall that far is his character issues , had he stayed in school and not run off at the mouth he WOULD BE a first round selection , no doubt about it . Which ever team is willing to take a shot @ Clarett with a late round selection may end up w/ a franchise back OR some punk kid who shoots off @ the mouth . Question is if its worth takin the shot on him .... I would.
This doesnt mean i think Clarett is the best back in the draft , just the best value for the pick and the type of back who the Texans need .... good between the tackles ( Yeah , DD had a Hella good day against the Jags .... If he can continue that ... there is no need for another RB)

the Texans will not draft Maurice Clarett, at least to play for the Texans. In my opinion I doubt that Casserly would even draft Maurice just because of value or turn & package him to another team for more picks.

as far as accurate here is a paragraph from last years Insiders Draft Guide-

Poor choices and bad advice have added up to an unfulfilled collegiate career. Legally battling the NFL and forcing his way into the draft was yet another bad decision, as he is neither physically nor mentally prepared to handle the rigors of a professional league. Very risky choice before the 4th round based on durability and character concerns.

where in Texans franchise history has Casserly drafted a prospect with so much baggage and character issues?
 
Since your post was not clear (that is why I said, "if I am understanding your implication") it looked as if you were implying that the Texans valued Clarett more than the 4-5th rounder comment you quoted from Comstocklode. I have seen Casserly comment on Clarett before and that would be a false characterization.
 
I don't understand why Ced Ben from UT is not getting any coderation for the Texans #1 pick. I agree with McClain, DL will not get a first round priority in the 3-4, if a OL is picked up it will be a vet. Maybe another CB but I don't think that is enough of a need.
 
cause as of now cedric benson is probably a top 5 pick which we won't be picking...and even so i don't believe it would be worth it to trade that many picks to be up there to get him...i see us realistically looking at anthony thomas and lamont jordon and ron dayne as possible guys we can bring in...all of these guys can pound the ball in there be a more physical back than davis although i must say Wells has been impressive during the few snaps he gets in the game...he seems to have really matured since his rookie season
