I'd like a winning record, and I want there to be significant progress on the offense and for the defense to come together with all the new pieces. I think if we make any rash decisions just because we miss the playoffs and go 8-8 or something like that, we will just be asking for a few more years of mediocrity as a new coach comes in and rebuilds the team.

I'm sooo glad to hear someone else mention the "5 Year Plan". Besides, IMO, McNair didn't get to be a billionaire by making knee-jerk reactions. He's in this for the long haul and the standard to which all other NFL owners should be held to.Texans86 said:Does no one believe in the five year plan anymore? In 1996, the Panthers shook up the league by winning their final seven regular-season games, resulting in a 12-4 record and the NFC West title. Carolina then defeated defending Super Bowl champion Dallas in the divisional playoffs before bowing to Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game at Lambeau Field. The Panthers, riding a defensive unit that ranked second in the league in points allowed, posted a 9-0 home record (including playoffs). Eight Panthers played in the Pro Bowl. Capers was named Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, among numerous other honors.
The Panthers posted records of 7-9 and 4-12 the next two seasons, resulting in Capers dismissal.
Good idea, but it'll never happen. Capers is gonna lead us to the Promised Land. At least that's what the Kickin' Chicken is tellin' me.scourge said:if we go 5-11 or worse, he may go... but I doubt that'll happen. If he did, I'd like to see him stay on as our defensive coordinator.

LT .... They MUST get someone tp protect Carr's blindside , i Highly doubt this player is on the roster now , ive heard enough about Wands potential . Its time to get a quality player either in the draft or Free agency .
Someone to put some heat on the opponent's QB be it a lineman or LB . For all those who think Antwan Peek is the answer here .... he's got a grand total of 3 sacks in the past two years with the Texans and predominantly see's action on passing downs ..... has looked pretty poor this pre-season in the pass rushing department . His cover skills and ability to contain the outside are seriously suspect .
Jason Babin had a decent rookie season but wasnt the be all end all pass rushing monster that Casserly and Capers made him out to be . He does play the run fairly well and has decent cover skills .
WR .... The really need someone to take some of the pressure off of Andre Johnson . Cory Bradford IS NOT the answer . Gaffney is a solid #3 ... Kendrick Starling , LaTarence Dunbar , Sloan Thomas , Devin Pitts , Reggie Swinton , Jerome Mathis , Kevin Kasper , Donovan Morgan .... could one of these guy's be the answer ?
TE ..... They have a need for a TE who can both block well and catch the ball not just one or the other . Its possible that Matt Murphy could be that guy ..... we'll have to wait and see .
Overall the Texans have good talent at most positions but just not enough to make them serious play off contenders . Capers should get another year or two to build this team . It falls upon Him and Casserly to upgrade their weaknesses ...7-9 would be a reasonable record for this team .
Source: These players and coaches need to produceDom Capers: After losing 32 games in his first three seasons, the word is that Houston owner Robert McNair would like to have a winning season this year. It's been tough for Capers in a division with the Colts, Titans and Jaguars. But the Titans are slipping and the schedule isn't too tough compared to others. Are the expectations too high? Not really. The Texans were 7-9 last season and swept the Jags and Titans. Going 10-6 makes sense to the front office.

My vote is for giving Gary Kubiak a shot at head coach and promote Jon Hoke to Defensive Coordinator.

dalemurphy said:Capers knows football. He's a good teacher and communicator and he is respected by his players and assistants. Therefore, he shouldn't go anywhere. I do agree that if improvements aren't made in some areas that changes should happen. However, Casserly is in charge of such things. The only way I foresee Capers leaving is if Casserly demands certain coaching/philosophical changes that Capers blocks. If the organization gets to that point, only then would I expect Capers to go.
BigBull17 said:I agree with a new OC but Capers is a great head coach and I would hate to see the Head coach change every three-four years. Thats why Clevlend and San Fran look so bad
bckey said:Capers knows defense not offense and I don't know that he is a good teacher and communicator. Every interview I have ever seen him in will put you to sleep. He alway puts a positive spin on everything. He never seems to show any intensity. Get in a players a** once in a while when he screws up. Throw your clipboard at a ref or punch Palmer for calling that stupid near lateral pass to AJ 5 times a game. Show some fire! This is football! I saw enough combing the hair over with his hand and clapping to positively reinforce our players when the chips were down from Pardee. Just rewatch the Oilers/Bills game. Give Hoke a shot if Dom can't show improvent this season.
dalemurphy said:One of my favorite Capers' quotes:
"We are going to understate and overperform"... that's his philosophy and one that he certainly lives by. Therefore, you won't see him bringing attention to himself. He will work his butt off and expect everyone around him to do the same. Only a fool would say that the team hasn't at least met expectations each of the first three seasons. Why is it that everyone assumes it won't happen again.
For those who lack the ability to be reasonable. Here is what you should expect: A significantly improved team in all three facets. A team that doesn't look outmatched against any teams in the NFL- though there will of course be a couple ugly games. And, depending on injuries somewhere between 8-10 wins. Of course, if we lose Carr, Wade, Pitts, Dunta, Payne, etc... for most of the season then we may end up closer to 6. Settle down and enjoy the first season where we will have playoff hopes in December.

Based on the team play we have seen so far we will be lucky to make it to the .500 mark. So far there are no signs of cohesion on this ball club. My favorite quote is "If only they would execute". And then their are the amazing statements like he saw a lot of great things in the Dallas game. Well, going back to last season's Brown's game, we can say 3 of the last 4 have looked pretty bad and that might be an understatement. I supose that's what he means by understating.

How does anybody think they can remotely gauge the success of a 16 game season off of a handful of series in the preseason? The starters have basically played only one half of football. For one to recognize the level of cohesion in that amount of time seems impossible.![]()

IMO, what we are seeing from the Texans is not a culmination of a few
plays but, rather, what exist after 3 years of playing together as a team.
The question for me is whether or not what we are seeing on the field is
an acceptable level of performance given the time factor of 3 years.
During their existence IMO, there has been little difference in results
between the preseason and the regular season--our level of play has been
basically the same. Hopefully, beginning on 9/11, this thought will change
and the Texans will be on their way to a great year!![]()

You do realize that hiring a new HC takes us back to the beginning, yeah? A point, I might add, that requires the players to learn new systems and basically start from scratch.
At least give the coach a fourth season before breaking out the whine and cheese.
Such fairweather fans...tsk, tsk, tsk![]()

Gruden? Sure he took a talented Bucs team (9-7 the previous year) to the Superbowl in his first season. Everyone was calling him the best young coach in football. Since then he's gone 7-9 and 5-11.
Gibbs maybe? Washington had easily the most fan-tastic offseasons over the past few seasons. Results are ugly.
Parcells? Awesome first year but he failed to post a record better than Capers last year. He's working on year 3. If he's successful then he only proves it does take time.
I'm not saying it can't happen but would say it'd be very rare for team that's considered "good" to give up on it's head coach and have the next coach come in and immediately improve the team for the longterm. Just like all coaches, Capers needs to win. I think he has a longer rope than most head coaches because of the expansion process. He has had MUCH less to start with than Parcells or Gibbs so he should get more time. How much time is up for debate but I'd place the number at 6 years. Less if the team collapses this season.
Bottom line: Coaches need talent to win.
