Capers Feels 0-4 and 4-0 the Same Thing?

Here's a quote today from Capers in the Houston Chronicle:

Capers is quoted today saying, "You have to keep doing the things that give you a chance to win, because if you lower your standards, take a frontrunner approach, point fingers and make excuses and (do) all those things that losing teams do, you have no chance at getting better. It doesn't make any difference if you're 4-0 or 0-4; you can't change the way you do things."

So, our head coach doesn't feel he needs to change anything at this point because to him 0-4 is the same as 4-0. Why make any changes, we're just doing wonderful. We have a perfect record. :goodnight

McNair has the same mentality...He said that firing Capers or CC wouldn't change anything...Gee, I wonder what's wrong with the Texans... :brickwall :confused: :challenge :crying:
 
That wasn't his point. It was that, no matter your record, you need to stay on course. Don't stray off the road.

If there's fault to be found it's in his rigid approach. If he were able to modify his system maybe we'd be more successful.

Capers said "You can't change the the way you do things." Maybe that is why we have the same O line in week after week getting Carr killed...
 
When do the Texans start doing the things that give you a chance to win? Personally, I'd like to see the things that give you a win, forget the "chance".

Besides, I'm glad they're not lowering their standards... I don't think there's a sub-loss way to keep rankings. Would lower standards mean a sack on EVERY play? Aturnover on the 3rd down vs 4th? A crayon to write in the notepad vs. a pen? A defense that put pressure on making the QB throw deeper and the running back faster?

Ah, flip it... I'm just babbling. God forbid we do all those "other things" that losing teams do.
 
Just a guess but I think he means if you throw all the other negative stuff (lowering standards, pointing fingers, making excuses) on top of what you're already doing/not doing, it doesn't help you get any closer to your goal.

But yeah, I'd like to think he doesn't believe they've been doing the things that give them the best chance of winning.

So what's the problem? I have no problem with the quote. If you take it in its entirety, it's 100 percent right on. If you're playing with intensity and still 0-4, what are you supposed to do? Play with less intensity? You should always be going full bore, no matter what your record. Sounds right to me!
 
His quote Sunday night was about the same:

Capers: "We are going to look at game film tomorrow and see if there is anything that needs to be changed".

:um:

ummmm...Earth to Coach Capers: What you're doing is causing the team to lose.

Now, I'm far from an expert, but if the HC believes that they are doing everything they can to win...and the result is the team that we have witnessed the past four games...and 0-4 doesn't necessarily mean that anything needs to change...

Well, that's cool.

Seriously, he should just stay right on course. Rigid. Unable to see the forest for the trees.

Because this line of thinking will ensure that the Fire Capers Club is a short-termed organization.

The thing that REALLY concerns me is the fact that Robinson admitted he has lost heart. I don't care how good folks say he is; if he admits he has lost heart -- and he can only speak for himself and not the rest of the team, mind you -- then he probably needs to be benched. We don't need any half-hearted players out there. Perhaps something needs to be done with him until he gets his heart back.
 
Hey guys, everyone needs to take a deep breath. I read the article as well and you take away from it what you want to. That goes with all of the other quotes that are being displayed on this board. Some quotes are more blunt than others but everyone on here is disappointed. Depending on how mad you are at his point in the season determines how negative you find these quotes. I took away from the article on Dom that he still thinks this team can turn it around and he thinks they just need to find some confidence and play like they are a better team. Whether it is true or not, only time will tell. The one thing this team is lacking that you can't coach is a swagger. There is a multitude of problems going on at the same time and that's why this looks like it is getting out of hand. We are having confidence issues with our QB, recievers not getting open/dropping passes, OL/DL not doing there job-all at the same time. Not to mention the our secondary. When our players finally get an attitude and that "swagger" and believe that no other team can cover/block/tackle/rush them, they will truly be a great team. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, having confidence in your abilities is more important that anything else we are missing. That one missing ingredient will turn this season around in a heartbeat. I wonder if the coaches ever though of turning on the movie RUDY in the locker room before game time to motivate our players. :tv:
 
You're right, and that's why I think we need a new coach. A new coach can bring swagger. Losing wears you down, it wears anybody down. We need to get rid of Capers and bring in a coach who believes he can win with this team. We need to draft and sign free agents from winning teams. We need people in the locker room who are expecting to win - not people who have been knocked around for the last few seasons. I think that's what Carr's problem is right now, he's almost given up. He's already taken more sacks then most qb's take in a career -can you really blame him? I think a change at the top can reassure everybody that this organization is going to start doing things differently - like maybe win football games. I think (an end of season) coaching change would energize our players.

You have to have a few years of winning seasons to create 'swagger' and that takes time. Capers was headed in that direction. You start over with a new coach and there's no guarantee things won't get even worse.

Then you won't get any takers -- depending on what you mean by "winning." If winning means 8-8, that's possible. But this team is a year or two away from being a winning franchise -- and that was the case even before the implosion.

Yeah, right. You mean like Orlando Pace? Why would anybody want to leave a winning franchise to go with a loser? That is the problem the Texans have always faced -- free agents want to go to a contender and the Texans are too young to be real contenders and may not be for some time. Easier said than done.

The only guy who has publicly said he has given up and has no heart is Robinson. That's his problem -- it isn't Carr's.

Some of us DO need to take a deep breath. Casserly, Capers, and that entire staff have been doing this NFL thing longer than some of you have been alive. They've all been through winning streaks, losing streaks, good seasons, bad seasons, hirings, and firings, way, way before McNair even thought of trying to buy a team.

What they are hearing now . . . they've heard many, many times before, and they simply acknowledge it as something that goes with the territory. If the team is losing, people are going to be frustated and upset.

If Bob McNair said that he's keeping the coaching in tact, take comfort that you don't have an owner like the Redskins Dan Snyder, who is as much of a knee-jerk as a football message board poster. :bomb:

Maybe that's the problem. Coach Capers has heard the sounds of losing "many, many times before".

You hit the nail on the head and probably didn't mean to, 'eh? ;)

Y'know, I don't think there were too many unrealistic expectations. Most everyone I've talked to during the off-season just wanted to see improvement, which can be an 8-8 team.

It's the way the first four games were lost that's the problem. The players looked like they've given up, both in the non-aggressive play on the field and the way they conduct themselves walking off the field and on the sidelines. They don't look like they believe any more. They look beaten, resigned to losing.

That, more than anything, has been fuel to the fire. Not unrealistic expectations.

I suggest replacing the players who have given up with the less talented back-ups who may be willing to try. At least we could be proud of the effort in the losses, and we may be surprised by some of our players' abilities.
 
I want a coach that wants to throttle opponents instead of "having a chance to win it in the 4th quarter".

and McNair is correct. Who the h ll do you think will replace capers if he were fired today? The great OC, the great DC. McNair will make changes at the appropriate time when there will be a larger number of coaches available to interview. The best coaches currently have jobs. McNair is a winner and this is evident by his businesses, horse racing, etc.
 
But after watching these horrible games a second time you will have a glimmer of hope. I do not think he is delusional and from a managment standpoint you need to keep your team focused on the next game.

I do respect Capers for the job he is doing in the face of extreme adversity. That does not mean I like it, as I want results.
