Can you guys tell me about the situation on your team?

Hi. I'm a 49ers fan and I've been interested in the Houston Texans and their development for the past couple of years. Thinking they were a team on the rise. But I'm not too certain about the detailed information regarding your ball club. Your needs at key positions, coaching changes (I know about the Alex Gibbs thing that just happened the other day, but other than that I'm not too certain), and other events that have occurred. This is because I live in California and don't get to see the Texans play that often. Can you guys give me the basic scoop? Oh and how do you guys feel about Matt Schuab?

Well, it's the Texacos now... j/k

We have serious needs at LT and Safety, We have Shanahan's kid at Off. Cord.

The Titans are just a bunch of inbreds from Uranus.

Schaub, I still need to see a full season to know how he looks (Sage started 6 or so games)

As far as our coaching goes I think that we are pretty much set. Schaub is a good QB, not great. We got to see glimpses of him this year and what he could do but he was injured this year and our great backup Sage Rosenfels did great! Next year playoffs here we come!!!

Head Coach Kubiak has done a great job in his first two years. He's brought over the Denver style offense (a zone blocking, west coast hybrid with some bootlegs and play actions). We had our best season at 8-8 and look to be a team on the rise. It has been argued that we could have had a winning season, had we not led the league in injuries this past year.

Coach Gibbs will help solidify an offensive line that has been taking some heat in previous season. However, last year we only gave up 22 sacks (a remarkable improvement) maniely due to Schaub and Rosenfels under center. They have a quick trigger and are decisive with their passes rather than the confused and shell-shocked Carr. Getting rid of him has been instrumental in our development as an offense.

For our needs, the critical positions are LT, FS and Cornerback.

Ephraim Salaam is getting pretty old, but is servicable at this point at LT. Kubiak has openly expressed a desire for a young, franchise LT going into next year. Everyone agrees.

FS is a position that we haven't been able to figure out. C.C. Brown is servicable at SS (as is Will Demps should he resign with us), but we need a true ball-hawking FS. When you play Peyton Manning twice a year, you can't afford to be weak in the secondary. Which leads me to....

Cornerback. Dunta Robinson has been our best CB for the last three years, but has suffered a severe leg injury that will keep him out until mid season, at the minimum. Rookie Fred Bennett has been impressive this year and has played his way into the starting lineup, but that's about it with our cornerbacks. Everyone else is a nickleback, at best. Some shouldn't even be in the league. (Faggins)

Strength of the team is our WR's, LB's, TE's and Mario Williams.

Matt Schaub is the leader of the Texans. He's had his up and downs this last year, especially with the injuries, but is a leader on the field and in the locker room. He's an accurate and decisive passer but has his moments when he reminds us that he hasn't played a lot. I think that most Texan fans see the potential in Schaub that Kubiak sees, and that's a big relief from what we've been forced to watch under Carr. But overall, Schaub is a breath of fresh air and has all the tools and smarts to lead us to the next level. We just need him to stay healthy.

The only reason we need a LT, is because of the age of our current LT.

Only five teams have given up less sacks than the Houston Texans.

Safety I think, has been a catch-phrase around here. I think we are pretty deep at the safety position, with CC Brown, Glenn Earl, Von Hutchins, Will Demps, and Michael Boulware.

Linebacker, once we get past our starters, we've got nothing.

Cornerback, we've got average talent, whether your talking about our starting lineup, our back-ups, our practice squad, or our IR list.

Defensive line is our second strong spot on defense. Our starters are starters, and we've got decent talent with lots of heart on the bench.

Offensively, only 5 teams scored more points than we did. Only 11 teams avg'd more points per game. All playoff teams, plus Arizona, Cleveland, & Cincinatti.

And we fumbled, bumbled, & stumbled on offense all year long, and couldn't find a running game to save our lives.

We were 5-2 at home, we were 7-2 outside our division(which sent three teams to the play-offs).

We've got some work to do, but I do believe we are on the right track.

6-2, yo...

At home, we beat:
Chiefs
Dolphins
Saints
Broncos
Buccaneers
Jaguars

Man, no wonder I enjoyed going to the games so much this year... we really went 6-2??? That's a pretty good season! I hadn't really thought of it...

We are deep at SS, not saftey. We have not one FS on the roster. Hutchins is a nickle back, Boulware is a WLB and the rest play one postioion. We need a CB, OLB, ball hawk, FS, TE, and RB, in no particular order. And some G/C wouldnt hurt. And a pass rushing DE. And a big space eater DT. We are close, but still have a few holes to fill.

We're also very old and rickety at center. McKinney went down in our third game last year and Mike Flanagan came in. Flanagan is getting old and isn't as good in the run game as McKinney. Neither of these guys give me a secure feeling. They're both getting long in the tooth.

We've got a couple of kids (Chris White, Eslinger) that may or may not be the future of the team. White was more for Sherman's offense and ended the season injured. Eslinger we picked up as a street free agent and put on our practice squad but he might be the perfect fit for Gibbs' zone blocking system; a lot of guys had him highly rated when he came out of college.

We've also got Drew Hodgdon that we drafted a few years ago but ended up cutting last year. But with the injuries on the line, we ended up bringing him back by the end of the season and he didn't play too bad. Some people have suggested that Brandon Frye who was drafted as a tackle last year or Studdard who was drafted as a guard last year might move over to center.

But to me, we've still got a question mark at center.

To think that one isn't the cause of the other is crazy. Our O-line did an excellent job of protecting the QB, but mainly b/c the QB's got rid of the ball quickly. The O-line, however, couldn't open a hole for the RB's to save their lives, they were doing everything they could to hold off the defenders for a three step drop.

We need an LT, b/c we don't have one...we also need a C extremely badly, and as much as I respect Gibbs, I don't have the optomism that everyone else does that we are going to be saved by Elsinger, and cast off from another team that we just picked up. Nor the new Nigerian Center that we picked up. I don't see it happening there. We need a 1st round LT, and a FA C,

A team that with some continued smart moves in FA and the draft could bea team on the rise.

While Schaub was in the the first team starters before the AJ injury this team was really clicking. When AJ went down it took a big part of our offense with us and at least we really found outthis year what we have with Kevin Walter, who impressed me more as the year wore on. I'm hoping we make a very concerted effort to reward Andre Davis' play this year and make sure he stays giving us a nice receiving corps to work with along with Jones moving into the lineup down the road.

We're Shaky at RB and Might be adressed in FA but I'd much rather go draft someone in the third round.

We are getting older at LT and I'd really prefer we get someone to solidfy that spot with our first pick i nthe draft this year. It's going to be a deep year at LT and at 18 there will be lots of options. I know lots of people keep wishing for a trade down to try and recoup this year's second which we gave up for Matt Schaub. Unfortunately I don't see that happening.

Last year would've been a great year to trade down and we didn't. Instead we got a bright young man at DT whom I think has a tremendous amount of potential. Paired with Mario Williams and DeMeco Ryans it has the potential to be that sort of combination on defense that Warren Sapp, Simeon Rice, and Brooks in Tampa's dominant Defensive years. We are a bit thin in the secondary and I wouldn't mind a complimentary OLB for DeMeco. I'm not alone in thinking Richard smith isn't the guy that can take this defense to the next level even given more talent.

I'm with PencilNeck on our Center situation. With bringing Alex Gibbs on board this year i know a LOT of us are really excited what he brings to the table and there's rampant speculation about an Oline Shufle.

Overall like I said with some continued smart moves and having a good headcoach on the same page with a young, talented GM Rick Smith we got good things in store this coming year. This is a young team I feel I can get behind because it looks to me like some pieces are falling into place here and next year can be a special year for this no longer fledgling franchise.

ok ok, im a homer yes, but ive never seen such a great evaluation of talent, our team takes character, skill, and hard work all into account when signing guys to our team.... we are on the rise and in MY OPINION, we would have made the playoffs this year if not for the 17 guys on IR. i like matt alot, i just hope gibbs sures up our O line enough to not turn him into david carr... great recieving/TE core and our D should be REDICULOUS if not in 08, better in 09... im siked to be apart of this cuz hey are finally doing things rght, heck beter than right....

To summarize, we've come a long way. Our holes which most fans agree on could be filled with another great off season by the management. 2008? Here we come!

Hey Bluestar

The team was a middle of the pack offense that struggled in the red zone at times. The team needs some toughness inside at Center, probably a quality Guard since Fred Weary has a serious 3 way leg break that may or may not heal properly. Our "projected" LT is coming off a year long injury and he may or may not ever make it back...but fingers are crossed. Winston at RT seems to be the one player that isn't injured that is improving steadily. Chester Pitts at LG may have peaked as far as his upside and he is good enough on a "good line" but not the kind of player you want as your "best" lineman.....and at times he is (and he does play at a high level at times...he's just inconsistent). At TE Owen Daniels is not an upper tier TE but he is in the second level of players who is still growing and is a good receiver that runs good routes but isn't a great blocker. Jury is out on Schaub but him and Rosenfels isn't a problem area on the team. I think that Schaub will eventually give us a Chad Pennington type game with a slightly better arm if he can stay uninjured....but that is a big question mark. Andre Johnson is just a beast...plain and simple. Keep him healthy. The other WR's are solid and Jones may be someone to look at for a big year next season. I expect the team to draft a feature back...or find one somewhere.

On defense the team needs a CB, SLB, FS, DE and big fat two gap tackle that is impossible to move for 25 plays due to excessive cheeseburgers (this guy is worthless after play 25 in large part to excessive cheeseburgers as well)....we have too many light slashing DT types and we could use a short yardage type guy to help keep Guards off DeMeco when the field shrinks. DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams are who we think they are....we just need to fill some holes and let those guys continue to grow as players and dominate. Dunta Robinson is the other key player on the defense but he had a catastrophic knee injury and his career is a question mark as well.

Alex Gibbs was brought in to mentor Shanahan just like he mentored Kubiak in Denver. I think this was a brilliant move. This offense will be elite if we can find another lineman and a feature back this off-season. I'm not a big fan of the defensive coaching staff...but it looks like they will get another shot to put things together. To be fair, they have had huge talent holes to deal with...so I'll be patient with that.

The Titans are just a bunch of inbreds from Uranus.
This is actually a proven fact. All jokes aside.

excellent post big guy, rep your way :)

the Texans have a solid core of young players that are going to be around for a long time. The foundation is set, now we are just building on top of it. We need help on the OL (LT and C), we need some defensive backs, and could use a strong young running back. Outside of that we are pretty well set. As for Schaub, I think he will be the next Matt Hasslebeck. Nothing too flashy, but efficient, and in the right situation he can take his team to the Superbowl.

Funny you wrote this, as I did my offseason roadmap yesterday and today that covers a lot of the same territory and comes to many of the same conclusions as you:

Houston Texans Offseason Roadmap (I did the first one for FanHouse, and the other writers will be doing similar discussions of the other teams in the league over the next couple of weeks).

It's written mostly for Texans fans, but provides information to people less familiar with the team too. Already there's some thoughtful comments in there.

Interestingly, the Texans ended up ranked 4th in the entire league in red zone offense for the year.

As for the inbreds of Uranus, here's the proof:

I want to talk about this point more.

This is the point I am making with not knowing WTH Richard Smith's philosophy is on defense. Does he not see the need for an excessive cheeseburger guy? Is he intentionally loading up on smallish light guys in the interior because he wants a fast light line?

Here's the listed weights of the DTs (including IR just to get a sense of what the Texans look for):

Okoye: 302 (probably lighter)
Johnson: 305
Zgonina: 290 (most of that located in his calves)
Maddox: 295
Bulman: 300
Deljuan Robinson: 296
Killings: 310

We don't know what a Richard Smith 4-3 is supposed to look like because he has never run one. But apparently, he likes smallish DTs because these are all the same guy sizewise. I see the need for a big DT, and so do you, but I am sure if he told GM Rick Smith to get him a cheeseburger guy, that guy would have been got.

This is one of the reasons why the Texans struggled against the run and seem to get wore down in the second half of games. (The turnovers and playing from behind probably didn't help either).

This is the concern I have.

You can keep loading up talent on the defensive side of the ball, but if you don't have a coherent philosophy on defense, you don't know what players to acquire.

Not to mention Grady Jackson could've been had pretty early in the season for a fair price. He certainly helped the Jags push and came up big in the Pitt game.

Interesting... I never really evaluated it before now, but my feeling would've been that Maddox plays the "heaviest" out of those guys. I always thought of him of more of a wide body, not so much by his appearance, but his play on the field...

*edit* I don't equate "slowness" to "heavyness", otherwise Zgonina gets the prize, right?

Count me in the group that would love to have that big DT space eater who excells against the run. When Jackson was available I thought he would make a good fit for at least the short term of this season.

TC,
The way I see it, Smith is trying to build a 4-3 D with 3-4 DL..........and our DL was showing the deficiencies of the 3-4D......the run, especially if it is not support by the LBs........................and the pass rush, if not supported by LB or safety blitz.

Even with our known deficiencies, the SCHEME (if anyone could make one out at all) was poor. I would have rather seen an element of game plan that was successfull ocasionally accompanied by an ultimate "burn job." As it were, we continually got burned with little to show for it anyway.

I could be way off here, but I think the D line has been crafted to disrupt the QB not stop the run. Our LBs seem to be crafted to stop run not sack QB or drop back and cover.

What about Ahman Green? I know he signed a pretty decent deal the year he came to you guys. Looked like he wasn't doing that bad at the beginning, but then of course he got injured. Do you know what his status is? Is it time to move on?

Is it just me? How does a guy who knows nothing about our franchise hit the nail on the head the first time.

YES. I was going to start a website... moveon.org but I guess its taken. I was just going to put pictures of Babin, Pburnt, Matt Stevens, Charley Casserly and Dom Capers, Bosseli, Peek and add Green to the list. Oh well. That may be the dumbest thing I've said this year (the year is still young I have pleanty of time to make it worse.

But yes... MOVE ON!!!!

Mike

Ahman's contract was set up for him to be productive for us for 2 years and then part ways. Ahman started off looking like he was really going to be a good deal but he got injured so early on in the season that we never really got a good look at him. He actually injured himself in the first game against the Chiefs, tried to play through it, and then in the third game against the Colts, he re-injured it and was never the same.

I think he's going to get a chance to come in and make a contribution. But I think that the front office is going to make moves as though he's not going to be able to make it back.

Oh okay. That's a shame. I thought he looked really good in a Texans uniform. Is there consensus among Texans fans about who needs to be taken in the upcoming draft?

Our three primary needs are CB, RB, and LT.

As you would expect, people tend to align themselves into one of the three camps and formulate their wishes accordingly. Some of the "in the know" media types seem to think we'll sign a CB via FA and address LT and RB with our first two picks (a first and third rounder.)

With that being said, there will be a lot that changes between now and April.

I agree with this. also our GM has said already, he would like to move back for picks. I read that as If the remaining two high end RBs are on the board and we get an offer we will move back for extra picks. Stewart and Mendenhall will have to blow them away befor they will pick either one of them with an offer on the table. They are desperate for a CB. The consenus with the more knowledgeable board members is that William Gay brings the highest end in terms of cap dollars and tallent level. If the Patties don't tag him , I expect the Texans will make a run at him.

Did you mean Randall Gay.....William Gay, I believe is Pittsburg's CB..........

There isn't a whole lot Richard Smith can do about having lighter DTs. The only guy that he seemed to want was Okoye and that is because he is a special talent. These other guys, besides Johnson, are fill-in guys. Maddox has proven he can play and he just happens to be on the lighter side. He plays like a bigger DT.

I think you wil see SmithDC lobby for a bigger space eater in FA.

Between Vinny & TC, both of whom I think has taken quite a bit of their time to observe, to listen, study and incorporate others' ideas and inputs, we have a pretty good sense of what the Texans are made of. Especially, when we add some those keen observations from other board members who are numerous I can't name them all (not that everybody agree 100% with what others have been saying.)

The off-season will give us more time to reflect and access where the team is in its ascend off the expansion mode.

I only wish to touch up a bit on the defensive side, where it still seems more foggy.
As we may recall, we started of the Kubiak era with a D that lacked agressiveness in the first few games, even as the DC promised otherwise. Then he started to bring some pressure and we got burned in the backfield, so they went back to the basics as the IR mounted.

This year, as some of us had noted, the Texans once more started out with the basics, trying not to make defensive mistakes that give up big plays. We never had a chance to extend the D, what with all the injuries in the backfield.
The idea was to try to keep it close, especially on the road, then make a game out of it. For a young, or otherwise depleted by injuries, I feel that it was the right thing to do. Except, we kept imploding in the third quarter in all those losses. (So it can be argued that why not go on being agressive on the road.)

Given that our schedule ends up one of the most difficult in the league, I think second guessing the defensive philosophy may be a bit too harsh. For we must also remember that all those turnovers by the offense didn't help.

Oh yeah, another question that's not really related. It's about your former runningback Dominack Davis. He was becoming one of my favorite players in the league. It's unfortunate that his injury pretty much messed him up. Does anyone have any updates on him? I'm assuming he decided to retire. Is this the case?

He retired before the beginning of the season last year ('06 season), and we were basically stuck running Ron Dayne, Samkon Gado, and Wali Lundy. I don't think a lot of people have heard what's going on with Davis in the recent months.

Well, most of us are pleased that we finally accomplished a non-losing season with an arguably strong finish to what looked like a bust of a injury plagued season. With all of that said, there plenty of holes to fill in our roster. First and foremost, I would say the secondary. Dunta Robinson, our pro bowl CB (and arguably the best player on our team), suffered a major injury this year and it's not certain to what capacity he'll returen...if he ever returns. His absence was noticable, as Quinn Gray and the back-up Jaguars lit up our secondary for 4 TDs and 300 yards through the air. Fred Bennett, rookie CB out of South Carolina, showed signs of promise...but ultimately will need more time on the field to determine whether or not he'll be a cornerstone of our defense. Ultimately, a CB/SS would be our biggest defensive concern at the moment. Watching other teams pick apart our secondary is painful to watch, especially when it's Joey Harrington and the Falcons. Good news on defense would be that DeMeco Ryans continues to be a beast (I just bought a liberty white Ryans jersey by the way) and Mario Williams has proven to be more valuable a player than either Reggie Bush or Vince Young, meaning that we actually made a good 1st round draft selection for a chance. With that said, an OLB to compliment DeMeco and a DE to compliment Mario would be much welcomed. I would also say that we could use a new DC, as Smith has done little to inspire any confidence. However, that's highly unlikely to happen.

Offensively speaking, we are in better shape. Matt Schaub showed moments of greatness and moments of disaster, as all young QBs do. Fortunately, in light his injury, back Sage Rosenfels came out ready to play ball and, as some would argue, actually outplayed Schaub. Our largest offensive concern, in my opinion would be the offensive line. Particularly the everything from the center to the LT. McKinney, while a decent center, is getting into his later years and will be returning from a major injury, I'm not too excited about counting on him. Flanagan, McKinney's backup at Center, more or less played himself in the dog house...definitely not an option next year if you ask me. Our LT tackle, Ephraim Salaam, while exceeding exceptionally low expectations, still put out a substandard season which, depending on how you look at it, took our starting QB out for the season. Watching Matt get blindsided at least once every game was painful. I would say that Chester Pitts, our current LG, is sort of our token average player who is mainly kept around because he is a great team leader and person on and off the field. However, despite being a great guy, he is hardly starter quality. Then again, he was too dreadful at LT, but I would like to see us fill that position with a first round draft pick as I am not to keen on the idea of just praying to God that Charles Spencer (LT, drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2006 draft out of Pittsburgh) returns from a mass array on injuries and just compensating for him while he is absent. We tried that with Tony Boselli, didn't work. Out side of our offensive line, however, the offense actually didn't look that bad. Andre Johnson continues to live up to his reputation as our best offensive player, Kevin Walter really stepped to become a clutch sort of #2 receiver who will go over the middle and make tough catches and take hard hits. Andre Davis, wellll...two kickoffs returned for TDs in one game. I'll let that speak for it's self. Even Ron Dayne, with a little help from mystery man Darius Walker (who posted impressive number in limited playing time), began to put up numbers that would imply that our running game actually exists.

On the whole, we've improved...just not enough. We are in the toughest division in the NFL, and good enough will not be good enough if we are to ever make it to the playoffs.

We have too many Strong Safties on our team as it is. Will Demps, CC Brown, Bouleware, Glenn Earl...What we need is a Free Saftey, someone who can cover the top and not get burned by the long ball.

I am certain that if Smith DC wanted a fill in free agent who is a bigger body, Smith GM would have accomodated him.

I think Smith GM very much knows the types of players Kubiak wants on offense, and not so much what the needs are on defense, because Smith DC's defense is one that has been only been seen in his imagination. It is not a scheme that he has a history with.

Smith seems to like small DTs, big DEs, and S without ball skills.
