Can we stop the run?

After watching last nights game I am more concerned with our defense and how we will stop the run. I have faith in our offense, but not in our defense. This year we have given up more yards rushing than last year. Thru 5 games last year we gave up 557, and this year we have given up 657. Last year we had an injury depleted D-line. This year we added Smith, and have Walker and Payne back. What gives? I really expected a little more from our defense, especially up front.
 
the D-Line needs to step up big time and our entire defense needs to work on their tackling. we literally made the vikings 4th string RB look like Earl Campbell the way our defenders were bouncing off of him.
 
I personally don't feel Payne has played up to par. Not his fault I'm guessing. I'm sure it takes a very long time to recover and play on the pro level after suffering a devastating knee injury. Also I felt they overpaid for Walker. He's on the downside of his career and he's become injury prone. I don't have any answers. Most teams have good O lines and they are almost all so big nowadays. It must be pretty hard to get down and have to push 300 lb guys around all day in the hot sun.
 
Yeah, our D is definitely inconsistent with the run this year. It is very frustrating to see 3rd and 2 go first down with a 17 yard run. :(

But I'm sure the coaches are more concerned than we can imagine, so let's hope they work on it and gameplan accordingly.

Payne agrees with you. In today's Houston Chronicle under Texans Summary on page C10, he says "I am nowhere near where I'm capable of playing." "You just have to look at a stat sheet after a game to figure that out. I'm making improvement every week, trying not to stress out about it too much. I'm still definetly not close to where I want to be."

I would like to see Ioane play a bit more. According to this thread we played with a depleted line and had more success last year. Well Ioane was on that line and perhaps that experience has done some good. He did make the tackle on Priest Holmes that lead to the Coleman INT in KC. :twocents:

My loyalty stays with Payne but it is tough to remain patient. As for improving the d-line we should look to continue the migration from the Titans and pick up Hayesworth (dreaming). He's who I enjoyed watching monday night. Any idea if the Titans are still in Cap trouble?
 
I said before that Seth Payne is the key to our defense. The NT is key player in the 3-4 defense and if Seth can't regularly open up holes for the LBs then the othe team will be able to run all over us and that's what is happening. It's tough for Payne to comeback to his old form but I don't see him improving much. We'll have to wait till next year to see the old Payne back.

I don't think they are entirely out of the hole yet. They are currently the team least under the salary cap. McNair's contract goes to some goofy $25 and then $50 mil per year numbers over the next few years--obviously going to get redone. Have to check out who will be UFA's after this coming season.
 
Again not to suggest that I would trade Payne for anyone. If you could build your 3-4 around any nose tackle who would you choose. Let's Veto Ted Washington to keep the answers interesting.
 
Shaun Rogers (Detroit) sure looked good against us and has really stepped up his play this year. 6'4" 345 lbs and 25 years old. I believe that his contract is up after this year, but reports are that Lions are trying to resign him right now.
 
Nosetackle: I say we get us a 5'9", 160 lb. guy who is a black belt in at least 3 types of karate. Let him follow the ball right under the centers legs and wreak havoc. :boxing:
 
Unfortunately the Texans run defense has shown no improvement throughout the season and currently ranks 24th overall in the NFL in run defense. Of the bottom 10 teams against the run, only one (St. Luis) has a winning record. Chris brown is currently averaging 5.6 yards per carry. The Texans are giving up 4.8 yards per carry on average.

Tennessee’s top 4 rushers are averaging 29.8 attempts per game. If they only get 4.8 yards per carry, they will carry for 143 yards against the Texans. I think 30 carries will be conservative. The Titans know that the Texans are weak against the run and will most likely pound it down their throats.

The Texans are going to have their hands full this Sunday.
 
Wasn't Robaire Smith billed as a good run-stopper? He was a DT in Tennessee, right? NT is the closest thing we have to a 4-3 DT, so let him try his hand there. I don't know what responsibilities a 3-4 NT has compared to a 4-3 DT, so I am only speculating/thinking out loud. Payne isn't going to cut it on those knees, though.

Typically, all three DL in a 3-4 would be DT's in a 4-3.

For goodness sakes folks have a little patience with the guy, he has been out for a year. Let him regain his lower body strength before declaring he will never be the same. In the mean time we have DeLoach and Ioane to fill in.

He hasn't to open up holes for them primary, he simply has to hold his position and be able to cover both gaps. It's also part of the ILB's job to burst through or hit the RB at the LOS.

IMO the problem is Walker. Aging and probably overpaid, but essentially not the anchor on that side that he needs to be.

Another factor is, that Babin is still a rookie and learning. It took Jevon Kearse a lot of time to be more than a pass rusher. At this point were only can be improvement.
 
Walker nor Payne are playing very well this year. I know we are not going to hear their names called alot but look at their stats and its easy to see why we are not stopping the run.
