Can and/or should NFL ban college players?

The NFL can refuse to invite college players to the combine. Can it also ban a college player from signing with an NFL team even as an non-drafted free agent? If yes, what is your opinion? Players such as Brian Boswell, Jameis Winston and Dorial Green-Beckham come to mind. NFL is dealing with abused substances, domestic abuse, etc with current players. Should the owners keep college players with certain histories from their teams?

The NFL is considering not inviting players who are academically ineligible in college to the scouting combine, a league source told CBSSports.com.

The move is being discussed because of the increased scrutiny on the maturity and commitment of the prospects entering the NFL, the source said, adding that if this measure was in place in 2013, a sizable group of players would not have been invited to Indianapolis for the combine.

It's their combine and they already cherry-pick, so what's one more criteria? It can ban only what's already specified in the CBA. Not sure they could add to that without the NFLPA agreeing to it.

Should they? No, not in my opinion.

I think that should be left to the teams. You never know when the light can switch on for a kid and he grows up. Usually happens after football age, but it's happened earlier for some.

Teams need to do their due diligence. And know they'll have to justify their choices with the fanbase... local and at large.

Part of me agrees with you.

The other part thinks that if the NFL takes this step it could help the colleges keep some of these kids in line. Most of them aren't scared of their university or the NCAA because they know the league will still take them. If that were in doubt, maybe that would keep some of them from screwing around.

That's a good point -- had not thought of it from that angle.

The NFL can do whatever it wants. But the purpose of the combine is to evaluate draftable talent at a more convenient centralized location, not to promote a system of justice.

but the combine could be used to keep "undesirables" from negatively impacting NFL image which is and has been under fire for some time. That could also benefit colleges who would have some help in corralling players. Only so much can be swept under the "that's what college is for" rug.

this is attacking the issue from the wrong angle.
if the kid is bad news, strip away his scholarship and kick him off the team.

oh wait, if the colleges and the NCAA was serious, they'd be doing this themselves.
...instead of punishing players who commit relatively harmless infractions like signing autographs for a little side money.

why should the NFL let the NCAA drop this issue into their laps??
