I couldn't find the Cam Akers thread. DeAndre Houston-Carson has a freaking thread. WTF?

Anyway

Akers liked the winning culture the Texans are building under Demeco Ryans’ leadership.

“The opportunity was like no other, the team is like no other,” Akers said. “I would say it’s a super team and whatever way I can work my way into a role here. It’s a super team. Everything is already in place. We’ve got the coaches. We’ve got the players, got the quarterback and the receivers and the defense. What don’t you have here? Running back, we got Joe. Everything is here. I just want to play my part.


“The first time I walked in the door, it was a winning culture. I feel like I was just walking into a winning team. I just want to keep it going and do my part to keep us winning, whether it’s motivate, make plays, whatever I got to do. I just want to be that guy.”

I said it somewhere else but let me repeat it here: the RB depth chart on this team means nothing after Joe Mixon. Opponent-based situational scheming.

No one here or in the building honestly thinks that Dare is getting more run in this offense than Cam. No one here or in the building honestly thinks that Dameon is going to take the lion's share of the backup snaps over Cam.

We didn't see any of that in the pre-season. We aren't going to see it in the regular season.

I think you are right. It’s also possible that Mixon is not our true #1 either. I know he’s been hobbled but i think we might be a run-by-committee type of backs.

Coach is on record saying Mixon is their bell cow. He’s going to get the lion’s share of the touches. He’s a three down back who can block, and leak out as a receiver. Now Akers will come in to give Mixons a breather from time to time.
 
I think Caserio and Ryans sat Pierce down before the pre-season games and told him…..you’ve looked like a changed man in practice this season, so to keep opposing teams in the dark…..we’d like to have you continue to run full speed, with your eyes closed, straight into the crack of the arse of any lineman that has more than 3 defenders attacking him…..can you do this for the sake of team?

I know. I saw that before my post. Remember… I’ve been a Texans fan since day one. I have PTSD when it comes to coach speak. Bear with me.

I get the coach speak part. I see it like this: I trust DeMeco as the HC. Even though I know coach speak is part of the game, I trust that he will do what is best for this team. I don't think he has a mindset like Teapot did with needing to prove that he was smarter than everyone else even if it lost games, or the toxic loyalty to certain players and the system that cost Kubiak his job. We will find soon enough the one chink in the armor, because even the great ones have it. Not sure that "having a certain type of guy around even if he doesn't fit the scheme because it's good for the culture" is his chink in the armor, but we will see. It is apparent that Dameon is loved by all and they truly want to see him succeed.

Holding players to different standards is poison and I’m sure DeMeco understands that. How many times can you say we just have to block better before problems occur? Players don’t like having their play called into question to cover another player not playing up to the standards they are held to.

As far as I can tell, DeMeco said that once.

In my very humble opinion, we seem to be waiting for an "I told you so" moment when nothing DeMeco has done as a coach has indicated anything other than Pierce has a roster spot. EVERYTHING else, from the unofficial depth chart, to his carries, to his role on this team has been pure message board speculation.

I'm not sunshine pumping here, but as a fan base we clearly aren't used to having talent, depth and a winning culture. We are just looking for things to take down the season. Pierce won't be one of those things.

I would still be willing to bet that DP is still the first guy off the bench to actually take carries when they spell Mixon.

Just hope DP actually shows improvement or the team quits making the same excuses for him that they have the last year if he's not producing.

Agreed but everything the team is doing and saying is suggesting it's Pierce.

As someone previously said thankfully if they're going to make a roster mistake making it with the RB2 is a pretty safe mistake.

C'mon man, stop that narrative. No one this team made excuses for him, least of all himself. He was not only benched after 7 games, but was made inactive for the following three games. In the final 7 games of the season he touched the ball 38 times. He was on the field for 15% of the offensive snaps in those final 7 games. He was held accountable. Maybe not the level you wanted, but sounds like nothing short of cutting him would have kept you from believing that they are going to resurrect his career like Jesus on Easter Sunday if they have to go 0-17 to do it.

The excuses were made that the line wasn't blocking well enough and other factors. I remember the press conferences and I remember the threads.

I don't want to punish the guy and I don't want him cut, I'm more than fine with having Pierce as a #3 or #4 RB reclamation project. Except that's the problem, he's been gifted the #2 spot. OR at the very least has been given the spot based on non-tackling and (mostly) unpadded practices. I'm also fine with how they handled things last year - Even if it took too long for them to make the decision to demote him and give Singletary more snaps.

What I want from Pierce is for him to prove it. We haven't gotten that - We've gotten more excuses, in fact Demeco excused his poor preseason showings to bad blocking and not getting enough opportunities. Then in the last preseason game Pierce wasn't dressed and was gifted a roster spot. Guys like Akers, Brooks, and Taylor actually earned their spots. It was also pretty telling when every RB was somehow able to produce except Pierce.

I'd love to eat crow but to be blunt not one of us has seen anything from him since December of 2022 and that's a fact. I just need to see more from him before I think making him the #2 over Akers is an appropriate move.

So you remembered the one time DeMeco said it? Or are you saying that DeMeco continues to state that Pierce's issues are because of the offensive line?

No one knows. People think they know. They also think they understand the stock market and the weather. Is Coach Ryans going to give the Colts his gameplan over TV and radio soundbites? Let's watch the game and let the mystery be.

I would argue that being listed as the #2 Rb on the roster after being outplayed by every RB that was in training camp including the guy who just got here and played for 2 weeks with the team....I would say that he was GIFTED the spot...b/c he sure as hell didnt earn it by outplaying the other RB's.

There is a reason the Texans publish their depth chart as Unofficial. Which is also the reason why we are not seeing a million posts in the Cam Akers thread about Cam Akers being listed behind the backup Kicker.
 
I agree 100% with Sweech. This braintrust has a clear blind spot for DP. For whatever reason. He didn’t earn the number #2 spot. Period. End of story. If someone brings up practice, that doesn’t help your argument. In actual games, he did nothing in the preseason games. He did nothing in the games he played last year. Magically, the blocking was better for Singletary. Magically, the blocking was better this PS for every other RB on the roster. What a coincidence!

So don’t tell me he hasn’t had enough opportunities or the line didn’t open any holes. That’s bullshit and everyone on the team knows it’s bullshit including the person who said it - DeMeco. He has eyes like the rest of us.

The question is why did he lie to the fans, and to the team? Why is he blowing bullshit up everyone’s skirt? Why is DP listed #2 when he clearly by any measure…does not deserve that spot? And I’m hearing it will be game to game or situation to situation. Still…being listed on a depth chart means something right? Otherwise why have one?

I will be curious how the backs are used Sunday. Personally, I don’t want to see DP in the backfield even once.

The depth chart doesn't bother me at all. If your messaging is about being rewarding by putting in hard work every single day, then it wouldn't look good for Akers come in at late July and snag a spot. Now that being said, when it comes to game time I hope the number of (unsuccessful) reps Dameon gets is very limited. Practice hard to get a spot, play well to keep it.

It doesn't bother me at all either. But the same people who are mad at Pierce having a #2 after his name say nothing about Akers - clearly the best RB in the pre-season - having a #4 after his. Like they know deep inside these numbers mean nothing otherwise they would be livid at both. But axes, they must be grinded.
 
Yes I’ve said over and over Cam earned the #2. In another thread I was amazed that Dare was ahead of him. This isn’t news. But we are talking about how a guy that’s been among the worst RB’s in the league for over a year not only makes the team, but gets placed #2 on the DC. We shall see how it actually plays out but the dc is all we have to go by right now.
 
With our schedule there can’t be any game jeopardized by politics. Hope this isn’t the case. Something isnt adding up here. Give DP a few snaps if we are comfortably leading but make him show he belongs. If he does then his performance will show it.

None...for me he shouldnt even be on the roster...I hope he shows out and proves me wrong...but I havent seen anything positive from him on the field for 2yrs now and seems to be getting worse with him losing weight and his identity....with scheme change and no vision its just a square peg trying to fit in round hole and it just wont go.

I've got a feeling that if Mixon stays healthy this post will be a moot point.
