Bush vs Payton, Sanders, Sayers etc.

swisher

Old School
After hearing alot about Bush's size, I wanted to compare him to other RBs.
Here's how he stacks up.

Barry Sanders 5-8
Emmit Smith 5-9
Walther Payton 5-10
Earl Campbell 5-11
Reggie Bush 6-0
Gayle Sayers 6-0
OJ Simpson 6-1
Eric Dickerson 6-3

Gayle Sayers 198
Reggie Bush 200
Walter Payton 200
Barry Sanders 203
OJ Simpson 212
Emmit Smith 212
Eric Dickerson 220
Earl Campbell 232

I'm not sure if the weight is from their rookie year, although I doubt that they are. Bush won't get any taller, but I'm sure he's going to gain a little weight.

I think for most of his career, Bush's size will be close to that of OJ Simpson.

Of coarse you have to take into consideration how much bigger, faster and stronger the guys on the defense are now then when they were in the early 70's. Which, when you factor that in, might make him closer to Sayers in terms of his size vs the players on the field around him.

Bush vs. his contemporaries:

Marshall Faulk 5-8
Priest Holmes 5-9
Ladainian Tomlinson 5-10
Shaun Alexander 5-11
Reggie Bush 6-0
Edgerrin James 6-0

Reggie Bush 200
Marshall Faulk 202
Priest Holmes 213
Edgerrin James 214
Ladainian Tomlinson 221
Shaun Alexander 225

So, right now, he's closest to Faulk. If he bulks up 10 pounds, he's almost identical to Edgerrin James.

I say, who cares what his size is. His height/size have worked perfectly thus far in his football career, why change a good thing?

people are bigger and stronger and faster and hit harder in the NFL.

Also.. he will HAVE to run between the tackles sometimes.

All in all he will take alot more of a beating in the NFL, and his durability is an important question because of that.

Isnt that why Clinton Portis fell to the second round. Look how he turned out.

im not debating the issue.. his durability was never tested at USC and there have been backs his size that held up in the NFL just fine.

So we really wont know what we have until we get him in steel blue.

So why not compare him to the greatest back of all time, in my opinion, Jim Brown? Or even better. WHY NOT WAIT UNTIL HE GETS A FEW YEARS IN BEFORE MAKING ANY COMPARISONS!!!!

because there is nothing else to talk about and if we DIDNT talk about Bush all you would be seeing on the forum right now is Vince Young this and Vince Young that and Vince Young doesnt have a bellybutton and Vince Young cured my arthritus etc..etc..etc..

But comparing someone that has never even touched a football as a player in the NFL, or even been drafted yet, doesn't make any sense to me.
I mean Bush and Young may and could have outstanding careers int he NFL. On the other hand they may both prove to be outstanding failures in the NFL. You just never know. That is why I would rather wait and see before I make ANY comparisons between couldbes' and have beens'

I can understand that.. but alot of the people making the comparisons arent saying "hes going to be as good as [insert player]".. they are saying "his size and running style reminds me of [insert player]"

Its just wishful thinking.. but no one is jumping the gun.

I don't think we should be comparing any of our draft picks to the best of all time. All you are doing is setting yourself up for disappointment when he doesn't exceed your lofty predictions. Comparing styles is different.

Mel Kiper also made a great point about comparing players. He said that who did people compare Barry Sanders, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and all of the other elite players of their respective sports to? Probably not the person they ended up being.

The purpose is not to compare him to those players in terms of skill or potential...just size and body type. One of the knocks on Bush is that he's not big enough and may not be able to run between the tackles. I'm just comparing him to those before him in terms of size.

And when you do that, you see that he's not that drastically different in size than some of the greatest running backs, and some of the really good current ones.

When I say he will be close to OJ Simpson's size, I'm not saying he will be as good as Simpson, although I hope he will be.

What gives you that feeling? Have you stood next to him?

Now that VY mania has waned a bit, Bush seems to be the one with an aura. It seems that some fans of the paranormal are able to channel Bush from the 619.

What gives me that feeling is that players rarely measure up to what they are listed at in college. That is why players are measured and weighed when they go to the Combine. I'm not saying that he is definitely shorter, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was 5'11 or 5'10.

I also understand what you were getting at with your original post. I am just saying that we shouldn't be comparing him to all time greats because it isn't fair to him. We did that with Yao and he is putting up solid seasons every year, but is seen as a disappointment because people "expected" him to be an all time great from the moment that he stepped foot on the court.

Here's a pic of Bush standing next to USC LB Collin Ashton (listed at 6'1"):

I'm not sure who Bush reminds me of in size. He looks short when in traffic because he runs so low. Not sure what Bush's weight is, but he has a rather wide frame like Priest Holmes. So he could gain a few pounds.

But seriously, do you really want to run Reggie Bush up the middle 20X/game? He's most dangerous in space where he can make guys miss. Kubiak has never had a player like Reggie, and I think he can't wait for an opportunity to design plays for him.

I'll go out on a limb and say Bush could check in at 5'8, 180 and would have absolutely zero impact on his career.

There might be 4 RBs in today's game that can run over LBs. None of them can run over DLs so I don't see the importance of being bigger. The ability to run between the tackles has nothing to do with size. You'd think people would learn this after watching Warrick Dunn.

Huge,

Some of these fans seem to want to see things the way they want them to be, versus the way they are. Logic has no real meaning to these guys. It is like having a debate with a 10 year old on politics. You are wasting your energy.
