Bush threatened...

The NFL Players Association and NFL Security have concluded that sports agent David Caravantes and marketing company New Era Sports used an attorney to try and force USC running back Reggie Bush to pay them $3.2 million after Bush decided not to sign with the group, sources told ESPN's Joe Schad on Thursday.
According to the sources, Caravantes threatened to reveal embarrassing personal information about the Bush family if he did not receive the money. Sources also say Caravantes tried to evict the family from a San Diego house they rented from his business associate Michael Michaels.
Calls to the offices of Caravantes and New Era Sports were not returned on Thursday and several calls have not been returned this week.
The house rental is still the subject of an investigation by the NCAA and the Pac-10. Officials have contacted Bush's attorney and told him they will wait until after this weekend's NFL draft to conduct interviews on how payments were made on the house. Bush's family no longer lives there.
In an interview on ESPN on Monday, Bush did not get into specifics about the controversy but said, "when this is all said and done, everyone will see at the end of the day that we've done absolutely nothing wrong."
Also, a source close to Bush said NFL Security has contacted the top four teams in the NFL draft and told them Bush was the victim of threats.
An attorney representing Bush says that his client had no knowledge of an agreement between his parents and Michaels, the man who owned the $750,000 home the Bush family lived in for the past year.

hey man...let me start by saying that shows everyone what kind of a person reggie bush is...he was on several espn shows where he could have publically stated what these guys were doing to his family but instead chose to lay low and try and let everything go by with out making a fuss out of it...i think bush's character as a stand up guy has shown through and there is no reason to doubt him anymore...he could have just easily told the new era guys on national tv to go f themselves but chose a more classy way on handling it...can't wait to see him in a texans uni

Careful, you can get accused of Man Love around here for that...

What time is the draft again? I think I might take a computer hiatus until then. Seriously though, this guy has been the pick since we lost to the 49ers and instead of doing simple reporting on other issues, all of the "reporters" come out of the woodwork trying to tear down everyone at the top. If I give into their hype I would believe that Bush is a crook and will break after three carries, Williams doesn't have the motor to play every down in the league, D'Brick needs to put on weight, Vince is an idiot because he failed some test, and who knows about A.J. Hawk. Maybe his hair will get in the way. I almost forgot about Leinert and his weak noodle arm.

If you believe all of that then you drive yourself to a tizzy. You make the best pick you can and move on to the next round. If all we get out of this draft is Bush it will be a bad draft. We need three starters in the first three rounds. Getting another productive player on top of the fourth round would be nice as well.

Once he gets down to Houston, the NFL and Houston will defend him against this garbage.

But why do you get yourself mixed in with this kind of company!?

Fact: Reggie Bush's family rented a house from a guy named Michael Michaels.

Fact: Michael Michaels isn't a sports agent

Fact: David Caravantes is a sports agent

Fact: Reggie has done no business what so ever with David Caravantes

Let's move on, no story here.

Even if they were paying $150/mnth to live in the house, that is irrelevant to the Houston Texans. If I were hoping to hurt USC's sports program, or just strip Reggie of his Heisman, I'd be interested in following this story.

As it stands, I don't. I'm more interested in the Texan's relationship with Reggie, which this has nothing to do with..

Fact - Michael Michaels has a first name for his last name. It's also his first name. You can't trust people with names like Michael Michaels

According to the sources, Caravantes threatened to reveal embarrassing personal information about the Bush family if he did not receive the money. Sources also say Caravantes tried to evict the family from a San Diego house they rented from his business associate Michael Michaels.

Not that this is absolute truth, but if accurate, Michaels is an extension of Caravantes, despite not having a liscense or whatever

Maybe people will start to realize a bit more why Vince chose the agent he did. All these agency super-firms make underhanded deals w/ player against NCAA sanctions and then pressure them to sign with them, might not be houses, but plenty of other stuff. Incoming rookies aren't anything but walking $$$$ to these agents. Yeah, he may not get top dollar for his contract, and maybe it won't work in the longterm, but he doesn't have to worry about being blackmailed...

I don't see this as "blackmail" or "extortion" - but rather about a family that took money and services in advance of when they legally were entitled to it. It's not blackmail to request repayment for rent and loans.

San Diego Union Tribune column

Union Tribune story

His parents were taking benefits from known criminals and former gang members. To me, this shows a lack of morals and class by Reggie Bush and his family.

That's not the kind of person who should be representing the Houston Texans.

What a mess.

Exactly. I'd be much happier if the #1 overall pick wasn't going to be distracted with this mess for the next 2 years as they head to court. You know thats where this is headed.

Wow. So now its they reporters who put the Bush family in to a house they can't afford.

Do you watch a lot of Fox News?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2425136

"According to Watkins, the scenario began when LaMar Griffin, Bush's stepfather, approached Lake during the player's sophomore season in the fall of 2004 with a proposal to form a sports management business. Watkins described Lake -- a documented gang member from El Cajon who is now serving time in prison for a probation violation -- as a longtime friend of the Bush family."

So let's be clear, there was some history here between Stepfather and criminal goon guy. That being said, Bush can't affect that relationship. This would also explain why someone would get some extra breathing room for missed month's rent, not to mention the 'your son is the #1 draft' thing. The personal relationship between stepfather and criminal is easily the genesis of the shakedown.

Let this not reflect negatively upon Reggie in any way shape or form.

He's old enough...His parents cant make decisions for him.

I'm not digging into this story, as I don't want this to be an issue..... meaning I hope the Texans sweep it under the rug....... we'll judge Reggie on the field & in personal interviews just like Vince........ er.. I mean anyone else.

But if it's this easy......... I mean if you boosters can shower my parents with gifts & money & places to live, and "jobs" then they might as well stop fooling around, and pay the players directly. As it stands, neither the player, or any member of his family can have anything to do with any agent, booster, whatever.
